Spring Fishing

May 3, 2021, 6:56 PM

I fish for Largemouth.

When the Hartwell waters warm, Stripers run up river. The rest of the year they hunker in the big pool. They are fun and tend to be big fish.
Every year up the Tugaloo, catch a few. None this year. Due to ### have not been out as often, but still?
Any of you real fisherman have any advice?

Don't plan anything for largemouth on Santee Lakes in near future. They have finished their spawn and fish have disappeared. Team Tournament this wknd had one sack over 20lbs, only took 12lbs to get check and only about 30% of teams had 5 fish limit. In comparison, similar Tournament 3wks ago took 32lbs to win, couple weights over 30lbs, and took 24lbs just to get check. Almost every team had a 5 fish limit.

The herring spawn is happening on both Murray and Hartwell. I would head to one of those and if you are looking for action just go to Hartwell. The combination of spotted and largemouth bass would make catching fish pretty easy. A lot are still spawning in lower end 6-8' and the post spawn feed is happening, just fish points or find the herring. Hartwell is where I would head if I just wanted to catch bass.

Fish just aren't going to bite unless they see that you are wearing an approved covid 19 mask;)

They run up the rivers in Spring, have caught many over my 20 years here.
You can hook one most any time of year up river (mostly hybrid striped bass).
The big boys hang below I-85 most of the year.

The deal is finding the herring. Some say look for gulls, but I say look for guide striper boats.
Seems like few guides were about this season, was it the Kung flu?
