Special Teams Coaching

Oct 8, 2023, 9:42 AM

Of all the things to complain about from yesterday this was the area where coaching was poor. Brown has never looked fundamentally sound returning punts. He does not get under the ball and has to lunge to catch the punt too often. That is something that can be coached. Punt returners fumble, even the best ones. It was only a matter of time before Tyler fumbled because his mechanics need improvement.
Three punt returns in a row in the second half, the coaches did not have 11 players on the field until the last second. The coaches looked unprepared in those situations. At least one of the times we were essentially playing 10 against 11 because our 11th man got on so late.
The wind was blowing and the ball would not stay on the tee so someone had to hold it on the tee for a kickoff. It looked like they did not know which player should hold the ball. I would imagine this is something you practice and go over in team meetings.
I sure hope some special teams coaching goes on next week or I am going blow a blood vessel before the season is over.

The one that really bothered me was

The kickoff when he let the ball hit around the 2. Luckily it rolled into the end zone. Had it bounced the other way, there was a Wake player ready to jump on it. I know college teams don’t have dedicated special teams coaches, but come on surely there is one coach on this staff that can teach these guys the basic rules of the game and when a ball is live or not.

I don’t think there’s any coaching. Kicker continues to miss with a hook.

YOu mean Bill Spiers? Director of Special Teams "development" and father to Dabo's kid's wife (who also just happens to Dabo's "assistant")? Or Dabo's former roommate and now Special Teams Analyst- Jody Evans? He was a HS coach in Cottonwood Alabama before we grabbed him while he was still available. Pretty sure Saban was lurking in the background for him. hahaha

"Best is the Standard". LOL

I bet a lot of top coaches give their brothers in law and former roommates lucrative jobs
