Speaking of electronic books and on-line classes...

on average, what do the electronic books cost each semester?
Back in the day when we all had to walk over to the bookstore and buy textbooks, it wasn't at all unusual for some students to spend upwards of $300 on books. In some cases more.

In the digital world, publishers don't have the print or shipping costs yet prices are still super expensive.
Most kids pirate them now. I know it's wrong but who can blame them at this point. They are already spending many times up to 100K for a bach degree as it is.

Wow! It was 1800 a semester in 1991 at Clemson

I know the exact amount because my butt was paying it working part-time!
Wait, the meal plan was about 300 and housing 700.
So a total of about $2800 per semester with room and board.

Amazing! Let's do some math and model this equation
Feb 9, 2022, 1:18 PM
|
|
1981 - 15K for 4 years 1991 - 20K for 4 years 2018 - 100K for 4 years
That's a linear equation with a slope of 2.5, y= 2.5x + 5.
So in 2028, the tuition will be 122.5 for a 4-year degree at Clemson.

maybe $12,000 but your equation is still pretty darn close.

Ok, that makes a bit of a difference.
Now we have this exponential model: Y=9.9131e ^0.063X
So in 2028 Tuition is projected to be 220.4K per four years.
Both models are close. Not really enough data points.

tuition ran about $55.00 or $60.00 per hour in 1981.
When I finished my UG, it was in the $65.00 to $70.00 range.

From our son's experience they are no cheaper. Also, some profs rely on it for homework and exams. In some classes the prof does very little. Although, he lived on campus some classes were online only. It's a scam.

I pay usually 100 -150 for access for a couple months. You can also buy digital copies but that's pointless

Daughter of rented her books on line. Amazon or some other vender would send you the books for a semester.
Anywhere from $40 to $200 each. There were a couple places she would shop to rent them.
Pretty good method. She probably spent less in 4 years for books than I did each year back in the 80's at Clemson. Not including trade in value of course.

and book buy back was a royal pain.
Textbook companies set the buy back prices not the school but the school did receive a percentage for managing the process.
For the students, at least back in the day, it was a relatively convenient way to pick-up a few extra bucks and the buy back prices were pretty reasonable as long as the book was going to be used again. However, when a book would go out of print and a new edition came out, the books weren't worth nearly as much.
