Sometimes, you just gotta laugh at your friends.

Jun 12, 2022, 11:33 AM

This hot weather streak got me thinking about something that happened on a golf course many years ago. It was this time of year, playing a local course near Orangeburg with three friends. One of them was about five years older than me, and just a "casual" golfer. Meaning, he only played maybe five times a year.

It was hot, and this course had a LOT of pine trees and undergrowth adjacent to the fairways. My buddy hits a wicked slice into the woods to the right off the tee on a Par 5. Knowing the area, I told him I would just let the golf course have that one, if I were him. I told him to at least take a club with him if he was going to venture into the wilds looking for that ball.

He said something to the effect of "Bah, Humbug", and jumped out of the cart and waded into the brush. Did I mention this guy would squeeze a quarter until he got eagle crap on his hand? He wasn't about to give up a golf ball without a fight. About five seconds after he ventured forth, I hear a loud whisper "HEY...Give me a CLUB." I reached over and passed him a long iron, and without even moving, he began to wail away on Mr. No Shoulders.

All I could do was laugh, I couldn't even get out the words "I told you so!" He was whiter than his golf ball when he got back out of the woods, without the aforementioned ball. No damage done, other than to the unfortunate moccasin who was just minding his own business before the Invasion.

:)

I bet every golfer who reads tnet has a good golf story they could tell. It’s that kind of game.

Shortly after I graduated from Clemson I moved to Winston Salem and became good friends with the guy who owned Deweys Bakery. He was a remarkable gentleman and quickly became an early mentor for me. I never knew what he saw in me but he thought I had potential of some kind,!!!! At that time there was a nice golf club in the area that had lighting for golf after hours. He invited me to join him one evening and he would help me improve my game. I jumped at this opportunity. After about nine holes of very frustrating golf he tired of seeing me hit ball after ball into the woods or lake and suggested that I hit an old ball. When I told him that I never had on OLD ball he laughed heartily. He shared this story with the other guys we had lunch with daily and he never invited me to play a round with him at the Old Town Golf Course where he was a member. But as a young man trying to begin a new life with a young bride in a new part of the world you remember the great guys who helped you along the way and learned to forgive and forget the others,

I love Deweys Bakery especially their brownies, Moravian buns, oatmeal cookies and hot cross buns.
Cheers!

I never bother gators. I was playing at HH once and a gator was sunning himself on the bank with an unaware crane or egret nearby. The bird got a little too close. We heard a squawk some chomping and all that was left were a few feathers. The gator then returned to his I'm asleep mode awaiting the next unwary victim.

I think about that every time I see that clip of a clueless

PGA Tour golfer going over to one sunning itself on the bank of a creek running down the edge of the hole he was playing, and grabbing its tail. That guy is REALLY lucky that Gator was not hungry right then, or he would have at minimum wound up like Carl Weathers in Happy Gilmour!

A friend of mine, who is a pretty good golfer, also likes to drink quite a few beers in the course which leads to numerous side trips behind a tree. We were playing with a guy that didn’t know us very well one time and he didn’t really notice how many beers my buddy had consumed but he did notice how many trips into the woods he was taking. After one of those trips he asked my friend “ do you have a bladder problem?” My buddy just looked at him and said “no sir, I have a drinking problem”. Golf is more about beer and buddies that’s the game itself for me.

I agree with you, it is about golf and beer with buddies to me, I’m not a serious golfer just go to have fun with them. But however don’t make yourself the butt of the jokes every time you play with them, like I did. I made the mistake of going into the woods once on the back 9, and in what can be described by me as a ### moment and to my buddies as a #### should’ve got that on video and funniest thing they’ve ever seen moment. My unlucky self took a leak right on top of a yellow jackets nest. They said it looked like I was running a 40yd dash while doing the Macarena while pissing all over the place. Haven’t worn shorts back to a golf course since, buddies still gift me sting stick and bee spray for birthdays and holidays. I’m like thanks boys glad someone found it funny. Glad to hear any other golf buddy stories like mine hopefully I’m the only guy on here to make that big of a fool of himself.

That's a whole lot better and worse at the same time than

Jun 13, 2022, 7:41 AM

my story about the thieving crow. I told this before, but at a Wyboo course that is now closed, I had a bag of chips open in the golf cart, and a pack of Unopened peanut butter Nabs. While we were playing a Par 3, this dang crow jumped in the cart, and was helping himself to my potato chips!

We finish the hole, and see him, and before we can get to the cart, he jumps out, with my pack of Nabs in his larcenous beak. Much to my friends delight, I chased that bird for 400 yards down the next hole. He would fly about twenty yards ahead of the cart, set down, and start pecking trying to get to the Nabs. Whenever I would ALMOST be close enough to try and brain him with a club, he would take off again.

He finally tired of me chasing him, and flew up into a tall tree, still clutching his prize. I hate crows. Luckily for me, no one videoed my encounter, so it finally died a mostly quiet death after a couple of years. Until we would see another crow, that is.

Sorry I missed that - I would have needed help getting to my feet after rolling on the ground.

butter Nabs! And at golf course prices, I could have bought a TEN pack of them at the store for what that one crow cost me!

Sounds almost like the old Groucho Marx quote, which was

something along the lines of

"I do not wish to belong to any Club that would have me as a Member."
