Someone explain the “Opt Out” to me

Dec 31, 2021, 8:25 AM

I understand if a player is hurt, sick, etc. but not the “opt out”.

So, a player is going pro and decides that the bowl game is a bad idea. Why? His answer, is he might get hurt.
Ok, then did he play in the conf championship?
Did he play in the last game of the season?
Did he play in the one before that?
Did he play in non conference games?
Did he play after halftime?
Did he practice ?
Why did he even play this season?
To arbitrarily decide that this one game, after 3 or 4 years - is so dangerous - is crazy.
Does not make sense to me.

Here’s the thinking. “Thanks for the scholarship, the training and the marketing of me. To my teammates, thanks for putting me in a high draft position. Yo the fans, thanks for spending money to make all this possible. With that said, I quit!!! It’s all about me now baby!! “

When a player decides to opt out, he is saying that he has played his last college game and from that point, expects to get paid for playing.

If he opted out during the season he would be dismissed from the team and possibly become damaged goods to pro teams. Opting out for what he recognizes as his end of a college career allows him to eliminate the possibility of injury.

Basically, it comes down to a risk/reward decision.

My thoughts exactly. What is it about that last game that makes players so injury prone?

The QB at Pitt opting out cost his team the game. Yet, he came back for another year of regular season games. Makes absolutely no sense.

Last year was a high end QB, deep draft, he would have been lucky to get drafted in the 5th round. He bet on himself and a weak draft class and came back and he won, will be one of the top 2 QBs taken. He used the excuse of losing his OC to not play, he accomplished his goal for coming back for this year… don’t agree with the opt out but seeing his backup break his collarbone last night, hard to argue it was the wrong decision. I get it but don’t like it.

It is code for "it's all about me". It is pervasive in society these days. If people in the 40's were like this we'd be speaking german and japanese now

I agree. But if a player plays 'half-hearted'

Dec 31, 2021, 9:02 AM

and does not give it his all, I would rather he 'opt out' and go ahead and show he is not a team player and cares nothing for his teammates.

The number of career ending injuries in a bowl game are almost zilch that I remember, there was a ND? linebacker that got hurt, but still drafted and played for Dallas iirc.

commitments. So this whole "opt out" thing is the opposite of those life lessons I was taught as a child and in the Army. Take away all the noise of "it's a business decision" and "he could get hurt and put generational money at risk" and the decision to opt out still boils down to who you are as a person. Either you are a person that honors your commitments or you are not - it's that simple.

I abhor people whose achieved success was highly dependent on others that are all to willing to turn their back on those same "others" when they deem they've done enough to establish their worthiness of higher goals. It is an attitude of "I got mine and don't care if you get yours". Once again - to do something like that says a lot about the individual and for someone of my upbringing - it reflects very poorly on that individual.

What is often left out of this "opt out" discussion is that most (if not all) of the opt out guys have insurance policies paid by the schools that would leave them with $ millions if they get a career ending injury. The insurance policy $ millions won't necessarily equate to first round NFL draft money but is definitely enough to set one on a path of comfortable living and provide them with the resources to achieve a successful, fulfilling life.

I really don't understand letting the Opt Out guys sit with the coaches or hang out on the sidelines. If you opt out you should only be there if you found a ticket on StubHub.

The quitting "all about me" player is there to get even more attention..even though he wants everyone to think he's there to support "his" team, that wasn't important enough to him to be playing with

I have never liked the opt out. To me it is quitting plain and simple but I’m old school. People do not think like I do anymore.
