Someone earlier called the smokestacks an eyesore:

Aug 6, 2013, 8:55 PM

A Clemson fan posted this after seeing Herbstreit's twitter photo live from Death Valley.

I agree 100% with the post. I have always thought that it is a shame that a campus as beautiful as ours has those stacks in what is probably THE most photographed spot on campus. Not only the smokestacks, but the terribly ugly p-plant buildings. The vegetation is starting to hide the p-plant building a little.

The problem is Clemson's campus has rated among the most beautiful by several publications and I have seen it complimented by visiting fans on their boards. However, we have the p-plant and smokestacks in the absolute most photographed point on campus. I really wish that plant could be moved and the stacks taken down. Don't say they can't. I remember when the water sewer treatment facility was located where the dormitory that overlooks the stadium now sits.

I just think how beautiful that shot of the open end of the stadium would look if we had nice campus buildings overlooking that hill. Perhaps dorms, or even a fountain. Just think of the shot of the library from the gardens, or the shot of the high rise dorms when walking from Sirine Hall to the library.

If it is impossible to move the p-plant to a less visible area, then at least design something to hide it. And really do we have to have smokestacks in this day and age on a college campus?

Again Clemson's campus is ranked very high in beauty, but that junk is just in the worst possible place.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By the way, ESPN and Herby on complimented Clemson

Aug 6, 2013, 8:56 PM

and showed very nice shots on the show. They did not mention the stacks and p-plant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Move the power plant? How about just clean it up a bit

Aug 6, 2013, 8:59 PM

And add some plants.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's not what Clemson needs to spend money on.

Aug 6, 2013, 9:03 PM

They need to rebuild the union/Johnstone first.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Aug 6, 2013, 9:15 PM

And that project certainly doesnt rank above the Douthit Hills project, Replacing the union, nor the construction behind the library.

I doubt any of them are paying attention to the p-plant, they are looking at an amazing stadium. And even if they do notice, they probably don't care that much.

saying that in the maybe 10-15 second shot of Clemson from that angle that might go national in, say four televised games nationally, the national damage to peoples' perception of Clemson University isn't going to amount to much.

If anything, people may wonder what the smokestacks are or if they symbolize anything to the stadium or some other Clemson tradition, but I bet on a TV in that brief time, or a picture on Herbstreit's Twitter, which is about a 2-inch tall pic on my phone, people just think it's some kind of blob or something else. You have to really, really study a pic to figure that out.

It stands out to you and me because we know it's ugly AND we know what it is.

I was thinking exactly this...it's like when you have a new phone or car or something. The first scratch, you notice it, and see it every time you look at it. But everyone else is just like, nice car...

Pretty sure this isn't a big deal. And FWIW, I've always liked the stacks in the backdrop. I'm not attached to them, but actually always thought they looked nice. It's not like they're pumping black smoke into the air or anything...

And how can you miss two huge smokestacks and a big white physical plant that looks like it is falling apart. Usually the p-plant just gets kind of vaguely ugly, but one game they showed a real close look at that hill and the plant actually looked like it had tin siding leaning up against each other. It was horrible.

Only 3 reason they should go

Aug 6, 2013, 9:03 PM

Location location location. That facility is in an amazingly central location on campus. A million things would be there including a parking garage or update to Fike.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

absolutely many things would be possibilities to go there,

Aug 6, 2013, 9:14 PM

but make it something visually pleasing to the eye and camera. Just about anything with an ounce of design and landscaping to it would look better than a physical plant with old run down white mill-house looking building with smokestacks. We have a beautiful campus, even out opponents agree, but the television eye from the stadium looks right on a part that looks like a lumber mill that was built in the 1930's and hasn't even been given a paint job. Granted, the relatively new dorm looks great, and the hill that leads past the shoeboxes looks great, but that corner where the p-plant and stacks are look terrible.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the smoke stacks are iconic

Why make something like a smokestack iconic? I mean

Aug 6, 2013, 9:26 PM

there's nothing nice looking or meaningful about a smokestack. A lot of people wanted to make Johnstone iconic. When I look at old pictures that have that full dorm in it, I can't imagine how anything that ugly could be allowed to dominate the campus for so long.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll tell you how ....

Aug 7, 2013, 10:44 AM

MONEY !!!!

The coal-burning Physical Plant and its boilers, electrical equipment, fire suppression, datacom, etc. still provide services to a significant portion of the campus.

A completely new facility would need to be built before the old one could be taken off-line and demolished.

With respect to Johnstone, which was erected in 1954, believe it or not, the design which implemented a new raise-slab construction method that was featured in many architectural magazines at that time became a model for college dormitories across the country.

I actually like them. They have been part of the campus for

a long time and I would hate to see them go. Of course I was also sad when they tore down Johnstone. But I don't think the smoke stacks are bad at all

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I understand your feeling, but there is a line between

Aug 6, 2013, 9:18 PM

saving something just because it has always been there and saving something that is actually historic, beautiful and meaningful.

I ahve been going to Clemson games since I was eight years old in 1971. I thought Clemson was perfect at that time. Since then, there have been many changes, some I supported and some I was unsure about. In the end, all of the changes improved the campus.

Think about the old water treatment plant and concrete circles that were where the dorm is now above the stadium. Aren't you glad they dismantled that and changed that corner?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If possible, move the plant & keep the stacks. They're cool.

They just took a famous smokestack down here in Atlanta and

Aug 6, 2013, 9:32 PM

they did it in a surprising manner. They didn't implode it, or knock it over. They took it down brick by brick. I kept waiting and wondering when they were going to take it down because it had been in the news that they were. One day I noticed that it was slowly getting shorter and shorter. And I noticed that there wa a platform around it and they were taking it down little by little. This stat was probably four time wider and three time taller than the Clemson stacks.

Some people tried to make like it was historic and should stay, but 95% of people were glad to see it go. It was, like all smokestacks, ugly. But to get back to your point, I am sure it would surprise people how many bricks go into those stacks.

Re: I don't think they are

Aug 6, 2013, 9:52 PM

Interesting. I thought the same and when I read the post above said they smelled like burning trash I thought they had been decommissioned.

Not to mention, in all my years and time spent in Clemson and at games, and LIVING next to them in New West, never once did I smell anything foul from those things.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't think they are

Aug 6, 2013, 10:13 PM

When they were burning coal the discharge was breaking down the concrete in DV. They switched to natural gas several years back...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think at one time...

Aug 6, 2013, 9:52 PM

there was some discussion of moving the power plant to the area of campus near the landscape operations area. Then again, that's right on Perimeter Rd near the Madren Center, so I don't know that that would work. Moving all those utility lines would be frightfully expensive, and I think Clemson has more important needs right now. Maybe somewhere down the road when a bunch of other things are done, that can be considered, but it's WAY down the list.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think at one time...

Aug 6, 2013, 10:03 PM

I would like to see a nice modern parking garage in that area and we certainly need one but Clemson needs a lot of things that are more important.
When you speak of improvements ... think about giving more money to OUR university. We have one of the lowest percentages in the ACC when it comes to alumni giving. That is a sad fact. I bet the Columbia folks beat us also.

Of course, our opponents approaching Clemson from that area may reverse the description, thus, applying the dastardly moniker to dear, ole CU.
