CFP committee's "Data Point" issue

Nov 9, 2020, 1:34 PM

I know....this is 2020, its different. Yada yada yada. But remember all that crap that the committee used in the past about 'data points' and teams playing an extra game? Well, from 2020 forward, we now see that is just bull crap. If teams playing 6,7 maybe 8 games can get in the CFP over teams of similar records with 12-13 games played....well now we see that 'one more data point' was just CFP's way of shuffling out teams they didn't want in the thing to begin with. So play 11, 12 games if you want in 2021 or 2022. They have no leg to stand on to relegate someone to a NY6 bowl vs CFP after 2020 when teams played half the number of games as other teams. Fewer games, fewer injuries, less risk. Why bother?

The playoff committee will almost certainly favor a team that played a close-to-full schedule vs. one that played an abbreviated schedule if they are otherwise tied for a playoff spot.

I don't think so...

because a group of one loss teams (like Florida, Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma State, or Notre Dame for example) that all played eleven or twelve games, are not all going to all get in the CFP while a 6-0 or 7-0 Ohio State team and/or a 6-0 Oregon or SoCal team sits at the house watching from the couch.

A one-loss ACC/SEC/Big 12 team that doesn't win its conference probably loses to an undefeated Big 10/PAC-12 team. But a one-loss conference champion that plays 11/12 games isn't going to be left out.

Somebody is going to get left -out.

If Florida, Oklahoma State and Clemson are all in as one-loss conference champions, you could potentially have two or three undefeated teams (Oregon, So Cal and O-cry-O State) vying for that 4th spot at 6 - 0 or 7- 0.

Easy. In that situation the committee would screw the PAC-12 and give the fourth spot to Ohio State.

I suspect you're right about that.***

Lets just win out, beat ND in the ACC Championship game and all else will take care of itself.
