Some thoughts on DJ

People keep asking me what I see out of DJ, asking me what's different from the guy that beat BC and played so well at Notre Dame, and I keep saying that I see a lack of chemistry/communication with his receivers. But I went deeper, spent some time talking to offensive people I trust, including one former WR here that knows this offense inside and out. He said this, "Look, DJ struggled with some throws, but it looks like is trusting his guys to be where they are supposed to be, and we know (because the coaches said so) that they ran some wrong routes against Georgia. Remember, these WR are having to grow up, too, and Ross is coming back and he's rusty. This is gonna take a little time."
With that in mind, I had a thought....I decided to go look at some stats and came up with this......Against BC, DJ completed 30 passes for 342 yards. 25 of those completions were to Travis Etienne (7), Cornell Powell (11), and Amari Rodgers (7). All but 31 yards went to those receivers. All are in the NFL, and with good reason. He completed 29 passes for 439 yards at Notre Dame. 22 were to those three, for 352 of those yards. He had older guys who were able to run the right routes and gain separation. I don't see a lot of help for DJ from his receivers right now. They are all growing up together, and you're starting to see Ngata come on. Ross will get better (he still looks rusty), and you have others coming on. But this will be a work in progress. For DJ. For the receivers. And it requires patience. Is this offense championship-caliber right now? No. But it doesn't have to be. It's why I asked head coach Dabo Swinney about the receivers last night, and he admitted that there is work to do there. The kids are coming along, and these veterans (who are veterans but have spent more time injured than not) will get better.

OL, and not enough time recruiting WR.
Hopefully we get this corrected.

As long as Tnet has you to lower our stress level, all will be good.

Not all of this is on the receivers BUT---I agree, with the exception of Ngata, nobody in the WR room is really creating the kind of separation we need for DJU to be successful.
Really surprised we're not throwing to the TE's more, also. We all heard that JLay was going to be a world beater and....nothing.

We should be able to beat everyone on the schedule during the growth process.
Hopefully that will be enough for a playoff appearance.

But does this explain the over throws? And didn’t they have all spring and fall camp to work out the kinks? And what about Taison’s performance. His throws seem to be spot on with the exception of the slight overthrow on the interception.

It’s easier off the bench when you don’t have the pressure of being the guy. His studying & game planing have to actually help him during the games.
He may be spending to much time on possibilities & over thinking situations instead of just playing ball like he knows to play. I don’t care what game you play, your better when you play naturally instead of thinking strategy the whole time.
He has so much on his mind he’s missing the main thing of just going through his progressions. When the light comes on he is going to be incredible & we will all know he just figured it out. To much time preparing for the Dawgs cost him during the game with sacks & locking on his WR’s.

Agreed--what I noticed from the UGA game was DJ's overthinking and doubting himself.

slow down and it looked like DJ expected him to keep running his route.
But I was at the game and only saw it once in real-time.

I believe we have the best QB in the USA. Still, some of this is him. Don't yet rule him out for the Heisman. I know voters don't give that to Clemson, but he is that caliber.

and that definitely accounts for some of the issues.
But it doesn't account for the overthrows to wide open receivers and throwing it up into double coverage like he did from his own endzone.
I'm sure he is a great kid and hard worker too, but his body language and the lack of celebrating with his teammates or seeming happy after scores is a little strange too.

Can we get an exposé on the OL struggles next?
Honestly that seems like a larger problem with this offense than DJ and the WRs, and also one that's probably less likely to be fixed with practice and repetition.

of view watching the games on TV. DJ's mechanics look off, like his release point is messed up. Ball either comes out nose down into the ground or airborne over everything and everyone.
Some of this may be the trust and route running issues David Hood refers to. I just know it looks weird on TV.

Just Kiddin' I had to do it!
Thanks for that David! I think we're also seeing how the coaching staff needs to play a game like the one we just had. It's not necessarily a time to showcase what works, but an opportunity to exercise all options to find out what 'might' work. SC State was going to get beat. The coaches have to get players out there and see if game time performance= practice time performance. Perhaps GT will afford the coaches another such opportunity as well?

Great report. Thanks for the effort. Would you next explain why we don’t use the TE’s? Similar dynamic?

Held on to the ball way too long too. I get your point if they’re open he can get rid of it and I know he wants to make a play. Doubt too many teams will be able to cover our wrs like Georgia did

Yes you did. I remember us discussing the uga game and why Ross was his go to play. We talked about Ross being rusty. We talked about him having more chemistry on the field with ajou and Williams. So why not have them involved more until the chemistry comes with the others. Or in addition to.

Excellent perspective. That certainly makes sense. Looked like receivers were having trouble getting open against UGA at times.
