Some of us Long, long time ACC basketball fans will

remember details of unc/Duke games past before it got to be another celebrated, graven-image ESPN "object of desire". This short article made me recall a time before cable tv and cell phones when people rushed out in the mornings to get the local paper and find out what happened around the league.

BTW, not real far down the list from the greatest college basketball player I ever saw---David Thompson---was Art Heyman who was head and shoulders above most people he competed against. Later, some years after Heyman graduated, he got a trifle upset with Duke and how they handled firing Vic Bubas, and refused to have anything to do with the university in any form. Perhaps he change, but Heyman was a hard case. Had the privilege of seeing him twice at the old "Cow Palace" which itself holds a unique spot in ACC lore.

Gotta agree on David Thompson. All these years later, I still shake my head at a couple of the plays I remember seeing him make in Littlejohn.

... there was Duke basketball long before Coach K.

And Dean Smith didn’t invent hoops in Chapel Hill.

And that it was NC State and Everett Case that actually created the ACC and the tournament.
