Some observations...What do you think?

Sep 22, 2015, 12:30 PM

Just finished watching the game last week for the second time. Here are some things I observed:

1) Defense is for real. At least the first stringers looked really good. I didn't think it was possible to reload with as good as we had last year but these guys sure look the part.

2) One of the things I liked about Chad Morris' offense was all the misdirection and motion that he implemented...what happened to it? Have we just not put the "full" offense in yet? Most of the motion was a tight end moving across the formation and then getting set before the snap. We didn't have one jet sweep that I remember. Even if we aren't going to run it having Artavis going across the QB made everyone expect it and have to prepare for it. Maybe we are waiting on a "better" opponent?

3) DW4 did not look the same. Not that he had a bad night because I think he actually had a pretty good night, but his arm strength went down as the game wore on. Is he still hurt? Most of his throws long have been short (with the exception of the throw to CP against App State) and he seems to be "arm" throwing the ball without much zip on it. Problem with that is if you can't drill it sometimes a good corner will bait him into throwing the ball and then close on it because it is soft. His accuracy hasn't allowed that to happen yet though.

4) OL isn't a problem. Yes they got some pressure on DW but in general I think they held up pretty well. Running the ball is sometimes easier for a young OL than pass blocking which is what I think we saw. These guys are going to get better and better. Mitch Hyatt made some mistakes but he is just 18 years old and I am sure he will learn from them.

5) Special teams KO return...our guys with the exception of Kearse just gave up once the runner got past them. 27, 17, and 15 lost ground to the ball carrier and Green actually lowered his head and slowed down noticably. Looks like 17 was held though.

Regardless we went into a very tough environment and played a team with its back against the wall tough. 10 years ago we lose that game...maybe badly. Proud of the tigers and can't wait for ND!

i have wondered if losing Chad Morris, based on their very special relationship, has changed Deshaun. He seems to be different in a lot of ways this year. I believed this guy was the real deal and I hope he can find his way back to the confidence he had.

If you believe he is the same brilliant rising star we saw last year then that's okay. Under most any circumstance 75% is great but throw in 3 interceptions, throwing poorly deep, into double coverage and he just seems to be off. I'm obviously not alone because a lot of people are wondering some of the same things. This isn't about hate or not meeting expectations, it's about being concerned about the person, not the player. You're so argumentative, you always troll and respond something negative to almost everything I post. Please stop, Since you obviously dislike me, just ignore me and my perceived ignorance since you and you alone are the keeper of the paw and no one is as good of a Clemson fan as you are, ignore me. I'm not committing blasphemy, I'm voicing my concern.

Just being honest, some of you are also expressing that you obviously had overly high hopes going into the season. His completion percentage has been good across all games (good enough he's already in ESPN's top 3 without playing a big top ranked game yet).

Last year looks honestly better than it really should, or would have...if he hadn't have been injured most of it. He played quite limited snaps last year. Let's start with UGA...yes he threw one nice bomb in that one....then when he came in later in the game, did he look that way throughout, or did UGA's D swarm the crap out of him? Last year Louisville, did he start that game with an interception like this year? Yep (they even said it during the Louisville game). Any of you have any idea if his injury hadn't happened that the one would have been his only in that one? Only 2 games gave him a real hype to build with...Fl State, and SCar while with a torn ACL...we haven't played either of those 2 yet, nor have we been in a top ten match up like he was vs #1 Fl State yet either.

So what if he had a shaky game against Louisville that has some concerned? To expect a QB couldn't have a shaky game is expecting perfection. And letting one game affect that you now think he couldn't recover/come back shows how easily some of you still expect let downs if you don't see perfection all the time. Even Mariota, who won the Heisman, had a shaky game against Arizona last year in regular season...and unlike our Tigers, Oregon lost that game. Our team found a way to win, and with 16 days to prepare, this may be the time the extra time frame could become an advantage to fix issues and look much better. Stay positive people.

Could it be

Sep 22, 2015, 2:15 PM [ in reply to Re: Some observations...What do you think? ]

That a lot of the reason Watson was able to throw longer bombs for td's last year was because of all of the eye candy?

No, more like better team play. O-Line held a pocket a bit better than we've seen so far this year...but several of his bombs were to 1) Peake...and 2) Williams. So likely, it's missing Williams as the deep threat guy (not necessarily a Watson issue as much as Williams' abilities being missing), and the fact that this season, Peake just isn't seeming to look what they hyped (dropping passes, letting passes go by him and not even playing it, allowing an interception). IMO, you might see an entirely different looking offense if the WR issues get shored up and Watson plays at the exact percentage he has thus far. Just my opinion.

Again I don't think I was criticizing him. I am more concerned. I know when I was 19 if I was playing for a national championship calibre team I wouldn't tell the coaches if I had some pain. Not saying he is I just wonder. All we can go on is that he says he is not so I will have to believe him just like the coaches do. Just noticed he is under throwing a lot of balls. Could be other reasons. Like he just isn't clicking with the receivers yet. He only had 3-4 weeks to get comfortable with them in practice before live action. Not sure how much time he had with them this summer with all of his rehab. He could have also been getting gun shy from getting hit for really the first time this year. Don't care who you are...if you got hurt last year and then started getting hit and asked to run, injury has to be in the back of your mind.

Just an observation not a criticism. I hope he lights up ND and plays the rest of the year healthy. Go Tigers!!

Response...

1) agree

2) Jet sweeps wouldnt have worked well against the defense scheme we were playing against. The runs up the middle with a back were the better choice.

3) He had an off night with. Its great that he completes 75% of his throws and that be an off night. The 1st interception was a great play be the defender... would have liked to see Legget fight fo it a little to at least make it incomplete but prolly didnt think that guy had a shot for it. The 2nd interception Scott fell down a little, otherwise I think it would have been incomplete due to him fighting for it. Not a good decision to throw that... slight impatience on DW part.

4) O line is a problem. I think that is what lead to DW short arming the throw to legget. He was tired of being smacked in the mouth.

5) dumpster fire right now.

My observations

Sep 22, 2015, 2:03 PM

-Defense is legit (think top 10 by years end)

-We miss Mike Williams more than we thought we would (lack of deep balls)

-I believe Scott/Elliot have used very little of the play book - think we'll see it open up
against the Domers

-We need Peake to step up, I tend to believe it'll have to be Cain or Thompson though

-Offensive line needs to grow up in a hurry

-Think we'll contain The Domers offense - O - line is the biggest concern thus far, followed by special teams
