I agree! Clemson has to do what's best for Clemson. This decision should be one based on economics not emotion. As Always, GO TIGERS!!!

Scott, I think what concerns us is something you alluded to:

May 13, 2012, 5:34 PM

the amount of money SEC teams will make when Slive is finished renegotiating their TV deals and maybe adds a SEC Network. If we knew what they will be getting, that would also help in the decision-making process. In the past 2 or 3 years, SEC teams made $4.4 million annually more from TV revenue than ACC teams ($17.3 million to $12.9 million). The new ACC TV deal will bring us $17 million annually. When Slive is through renegotiating their TV deals, what do you THINK SEC teams will get annually?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

.It will be more than the ACC deal..you can almost guarantee

that.

How much more will be the biggest piece to the puzzle...if you ask me..

i've heard 24-30 per team. Purely speculation.***

May 13, 2012, 5:47 PM [ in reply to .It will be more than the ACC deal..you can almost guarantee ]

Exactly. "How much more" is the fear. Right now, the SEC has the most populated conference in the nation (remember that the ACC has 3 city-schools, BC, Pitt and Syracuse).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How are you counting population? By city, metro, or state?

May 13, 2012, 5:52 PM

I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure the new ACC will lead in population in any regard.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How are you counting population? By city, metro, or state?

May 13, 2012, 6:18 PM

Metro populations for Boston, Pitt and Syracuse. I'm not counting the entire state populations of NY, Pa and Mass. Remember, we are talking about Northeastern states which are more pro-oriented. Even if I counted the entire states of NY, Pa and Massachusettes, it is very close.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How are you counting population? By city, metro, or state?

May 13, 2012, 6:21 PM

No offense to BC, but I bet there are more fans watching the game at the stadium than people wathcing it on tv. Boston is a great sports town but its a horrible market when it comes to college football.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sorry but word is that we only get 12 million next year...

because of backend loading. Or rather to say, because our contract payoff graduates over the lifetime of the contract and averages to 17 million a year. Please also consider the time value of money when you evaluate this.

May 13, 2012, 5:34 PM

FSU to join the Big 12. If the future are 16 team conferences, then why would the SEC not go ahead and gobble up Clemson and FSU and have truly a "Mega - Football Conference."

Instead, if all this actually happens, the mighty SEC will be left with fewer options. So, I actually wonder if all this Big 12 stuff is a way of grabbing the SEC's attention. If the SEC added Clemson and FSU, then it would own football in the south east. With Clemson and FSU joining with the Big 12, more competition is created for TV, recruiting, etc...

Excellent point. So the next question is::::are we playing

Hanging your hat (one way or another) on the BCS is silly

May 13, 2012, 6:00 PM

who knows how long it will be around...maybe a few years maybe forever.

The best option for a school is to find a place where you can make equitable money as your rivals.

The BCS and the MNC or possible playoff is secondary to the money.

Re: Hanging your hat (one way or another) on the BCS is silly

May 13, 2012, 6:05 PM

Exactly...right now Clemson is competing well aginst FSU, UGA, South Carolina, UF, etc. but eventually Clemson would be left behind finaically in a few years. The more money you make the more you can improve.

Re: That isnt the point, the point is

May 13, 2012, 6:13 PM [ in reply to That isnt the point, the point is ]

I see what you are saying and I don't completely disagree but wouldn't you want Clemson play better teams. IMO, I believe a weak conference can weaken a team. Look at the ACC in the past 15 years or so. I think when you are in a conference that offers more challenges, it will prepare your team to play at a higher level.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah it has killed Boise and TCU

May 13, 2012, 6:21 PM

They can have the we play in tough conference and I'll take BCS or playoff

Some note worthy information;

May 13, 2012, 6:27 PM

"...Big XII has an option to offer an adjusted payout based on annual travel miles. So, there are opportunities to make FSU, Clemson and others wholes in that respect."

Obviously, we're talking hypothetical's here, but there is a very real possibility that by switching to the Big XII, a team like FSU, VA Tech, or Clemson would be able to make:

$20M - $25M/yr on Tier 1 & 2
$3M - $10M/yr on true Tier 3 (not including radio, etc)
$1.5M - $2.5M on a CCG
$3M - $8M every other year from an additional home game

When the dust settles on the Big XII's contracts, most of the teams will be making $25M - $35M annually on true Tier 1 ? 3 payouts. And, that doesn't include escalations from a CCG or the bump in payout that would
result from procuring 2 or 3 high-level teams through expansion.

For the ACC to keep up, they're going to have to double their current contract, b/c otherwise, it will be very easy to offer FSU, VA Tech, or Clemson a $10M+ increase in annual TV take home.

Obviously we are talking economics though I believe with Clemson's fundraising abilities we might be able to survive five to seven years where we are.

May 14, 2012, 4:59 AM

"Due to the different geographical hurdles of each conference, some conferences help their member schools out more than others. The ACC gives each school a travel allowance and will help additionally in special circumstances such as BCS bowl games. The BigXII allows each team to bill the conference for all of its conference-related travel expenses for every sponsored sport. Once each team has been reimbursed appropriately, the remaining conference earnings are split evenly amongst the member institutions."

Unfortunately 1988, schools like SCU and UGAly raise a lot more $ through their fundraising than we do. According to this http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/ncaa-finances.htm SCU raised $24M, UGAly raised $27M, and we raised $15M in 2010. The differences in our revenues in comparison to those schhols are staggering.

May 14, 2012, 9:08 AM

, we have to look at the option if the numbers floating around are true.

When we do investigate fully, and find we have no choice, I hope our BOT/President/AD reach out to their counterparts in Columbia, and even the Governor to try and convince USC our being in the SEC is good for them also.

If we become intent on moving, I hope we do everything possible to move to the SEC. I'm just a lil' wary of how the Big 12 could negatively hurts our recruiting. It seems like a crap shoot with no contact with most H.S. coaches etc. in that region.
