So who takes over as O-Line coach?

Dec 29, 2021, 10:24 PM

Will it be the guy that works the window at BoJangles in Alabama that always gives Dabo extra dipping sauce for free or the guy that runs the carwash and gives the free upgrade from the $19 to the $29 that Dabo goes thru?

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo's bringing in one of his college buddies...

Dec 29, 2021, 10:25 PM

who is currently working in some football capacity at the high school level.

C'mon now. Caldwell has served us well under DS.
I thank him and wish him much happiness as he moves to what he wants to do next.

No, I don’t agree with that. I have a different opinion. However, I don’t agree with calling someone a “POS” either. And no, it doesn’t make me feel “big and bad” having to correct your childish ways.

Underrated position hire.

Going to be something to keep an eye on for certain. Recruits want to go where they can get better and have a chance for the league. Love to see us go that way(NFL ties in some capacity). If not; Dabo has done nothing to make me doubt him.

Dabo needs to make a splash here. Spend big bucks to bring in a top-level guy. I'd like to see someone from the NFL honestly.

100% agree!

All the fancy toys at RB, WR, TE and QB don't mean a thing if the play isn't blocked well!

We could help ourselves tremendously here with a heck of a hire. Someone that can go into a H.S. players home and say: "I can train you on some next level technique and get you ready for the NFL as you get your degree young man"!

That's what a bunch of them want! There usually aren't a bunch of dominant OL you can say are sure fire non-misses. Clemson is still in the minds of the kids who are coming up now; so maybe a change in staff will help in this area! And once we get them; perhaps we can develop a line that can run and get yards even when the D knows it's coming.

Thomas Austin will be the next o-line coach is my guess.
- An internal hire
- Has already been working with the o-line.
- A former Clemson player who is paying his dues as an off-field coach.

Nothing yet, but there is a lot of potential for the promotions to blow up in his face. I think we will have some success, but I don't think it will be what it's been over the past decade. Clemson has the resources to hire at the elite level at every position and we didn't. There's a reason that Alabama is Alabama. How many Analysts that have never called a play did he promote to coordinator? Alabama has continued success because they hire every out-of-work ex-head coach as an "analyst". Dabo is hiring low-tier high school coaches. So far everything Dabo has done has worked out, but it's gonna be interesting to see how the staff handles the blow of this recruiting class in 2 years. We ain't too deep right now....

As it relates to OL Coach specifically - I honestly think we caught college football just right in terms of OL Coach. We were up-tempo and they hadn't yet started allowing the defense to sub if the offense subbed stuff. Tiring out a more dominant DL by reeling off a bunch of plays "camouflaged" our OL ability a bunch in my opinion over the years! Tired DL who are gassed can then "not create pressure on the QB and not push the pocket so the RB can get lanes if blocked half-way decent"!

How does Wisconsin keep a good OL? When was the last time they sniffed a chance for a NC? Yet, they keep a good OL. Meaning; it's not just about the name in terms of creating a good OL. This hire is in my opinion more important than the OC and DC. The OL sets the tone of your entire team at any level of football.
Have a soft OL and your whole team is soft. Because the defense doesn't get physical play at practice. Have a physical OL and the WR had better block; b/c someone on the OL is watching and will call you out. They are tone setters typically.
It carries over as I said to the defense through practicing against that mentality. Thus it makes for a more physical defense when the game starts.

I hope if it is indeed Thomas Austin - that he is ready to get physical and ready to demand physical play!

I trust in Dabo and the Clemson football program - so "it's going to happen"!

I’m sure Dabo will be reaching out to you over the next few days about the hire. He should most definitely contact you or some other random person on this particular message bored considering he has never won any national or conference championships in his career. I just wish he knew what he was doing. Poor guy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Was it officially announced about Caldwell's Retirement?

Dec 29, 2021, 10:55 PM

I heard it on the broadcast by the announcers, but never saw any statements.
Based upon the reactions on the sidelines at the end of the game, the news appears to be valid.

Who would replace him?

My guess is Thomas Austin
- a former Clemson player
- a current off the field coach/analyst/aid
- currently working with the team

He has all the qualities one would want in an O-Line coach, and an awesome recruiter. Already, he is an excellent rep. for Clemson and a fast rising analyst for ESPN (not just ACCN), however no way is a salary for that match the salary of an asst. coach at Clemson
