So what is it pro scouts don't see in Tyler Davis?

Jan 6, 2023, 4:50 PM

Has good size. Quickness. High motor. Pressures the pocket on the pass and defends the run well. Can go sideline to sideline. Is it that he's only 6'2? You'd think they'd have learned by now that with all the other things he has, an extra inch or 2 isn't that big a deal

And Grady Jarrett is showing out with his lack of height.

He just wanted another year on the stretch machine to gain another inch or 2 in height;)

My take is his upper body injuries have prevented TD13 from playing at peak shape. Love his quickness, natural strength and play. Pleasantly surprised he's returning, and to your point, the NFL may want to see more upper body strength, consistency and ability to dominate. IMHO Grady Jarrett and Aaron Donald have lessened the NFL height focus for DT's.

Yeah, I'm not sure it's his height as much as arm length. He's had some weaknesses on big strong backs. Strong and slows them but he hasn't been able (at times) to hold onto and complete the tackle.

I also heard that he needs a team that rotates DT a lot and it may not be as much need for that this year.

Also heard that they'd like to see him better in lateral pursuit. If he works on that, and I know he will, watch out. We'll be top 5 D and maybe our best ever.

BB has the measurable and the lateral pursuit.

I'd say he's been a bit injury prone, but so has BB and it doesn't seem to be hurting him much. That and they may feel like he has already kind of topped out development wise.

6'2, 300 is to big for a DT?***

Tyler has been a very good Player! However,

He has not been as good as Grady Jarrett. Grady was extremely disruptive and made more Plays than Tyler has. And, as mentioned above, Tyler has missed several games due to Injuries.

Have to feel for Grady, stuck in Falcons Football Hell

Glad he's coming back is all I know. If he can be injury free then perhaps he can improve. When healthy he seemed as consistent as Bresee but I know he does not have the upside. Can shoot the gap but not as well as Jarrett. Can bull rush but not as big or powerful as Dexter Lawrence. FWIW Lawrence is 6'4" and 342 lbs. Played with a bad toe most of his time at Clemson. Is really blossoming this year in NY where his draft status was questioned for a while. Davis is 1 inch and 10 lbs shy for the average size of an NFL D tackle. I say he makes a roster - just has some intangibles that are hard to quantify.

Did he get a low grade or are we assuming that because he is coming back?

I guess having long arms is all the rage in football these days.

Great question. I don't think pro scouts release their scouting reports. Would love to read it.

The easiest, most obvious answer is "improve draft stock." And maybe that just happens by being *the guy* when the CFB season starts.

If you remember, Trenton Simpson, Bryan Breese, and Myles Murphy all started the year as "projected first round picks" and that hasn't really changed no matter what happened on the field.

I would not say he has great size, average motor, below average hands

I can't figure it out either...

1

Jan 6, 2023, 7:54 PM

I think he is our most consistent DL. Basically a Grady Jarrett type.

I don’t think Davis is in that elite category like Grady, Dexter, Christian, and Reader. I believe Bresee has this type of potential.

But, I think he can be a quality starter like a DeShawn Williams. Same things with Ruke.

It’s still hard to believe both of them are returning.

I was thinking the same thing. Carlos Watkins also came to mind.

Carlos has had a nice career. I do think Tyler and Ruke will be more impactful then him though. We’ve really been blessed with so many great DTs.

TD said they were a package

Jan 7, 2023, 10:24 AM [ in reply to Re: So what is it pro scouts don't see in Tyler Davis? ]

sure turned out that way. Neither Grady nor Reader were viewed as elite by scouts, 5th and 3rd round I believe. Tyler has been a force since he was a freshman. Had his best year this past year. He just seems to me he'll be one of those prove the experts wrong type guys.

Ruke has freakish athletic ability for a guy his size. His change of direction is really astounding. He just needs to refine things, having so little, long term football experience.

My biggest concern is losing one or more of Page, Williams and Capehart now. Trading 2 years for 1. I certainly hope all hang around, but to me it seems unlikely. With Woods projected at DE year one, Burley and Green are still both going to push for PT. Story as well for that matter. Are there enough snaps to keep 7 DT's satisfied? If all hang around our depth there is beyond elite

Nothing - There are simply too many quality defensive linemen to choose from coming out this year - may be the largest group in a number of years! He could easily make top five next year!
