So we really have a glorified flu shot, not a vaccine.

Not trying to get hogtied and drug through the T-Net, but media continually characterizes this double pluck most of us received as a vaccine.

Although technically correct, the term engenders mental models of other historic vaccines that have all but completely eliminated modern illnesses, i.e. polio.

That’ mental model is simply not correct. I would contend that, functionally, what we’ve received is a glorified flu shot. Works perfectly on the strain(s) it targets, on mutations less so, and not at all on extreme variants.

In my view, many have reacted to this reality by blaming and shaming the unvaccinated with the underlying thesis of, “if we just ALL did it RIGHT, we’d be at herd immunity already.” But is that so?

There have systemically been long lags between the vax’d and unvax’d. Many developing nations are months or a year behind the U.S., and now accounts are trickling in(and multiplying) of people who were vaccinated and still got Covid(a mutation of it) that have left the most vulnerable sick or worse.

So, if you buy into this line of reasoning, how long are we going to live this way? What is the real problem statement? How many lockdowns, new experimental vaccines, experimental boosters, masked up thricely parties are we going to endure?

Hell, why haven’t we had a world wide flu shot ho-down intended to largely eliminate the flu from the face of the planet??

—Because we can’t. It mutates. Fast. Faster than our responses. Why should I believe Covid will behave any different? Why should I believe we haven’t reached that point already?

If any of this is materially way off the reservation, please correct me for it.

My own sense is that Covid is not a passing virus that is just a shot away from erasure if we do it right. It’s now woven into our world, and once we do the yoemans work of getting as many vaccinated as possible, it’s mutated third and fourth cousins will still be out there ready to setup shop inside of Mark Packer, me, or anyone else on the receiving end of a wet sneeze.

Now shoot me.

I don't ever recall vaccines being marketed to the public in that way. They were billed as the way to combat it, limit its spread, and eventually corral it to the point where it doesn't have such an outsized and deadly impact on society, our economy, and way of life. In fact I don't even recall Donald Trump putting it the way you did as he took credit for Operation Warp Speed, and that is saying something.

None of the masking, social distancing, treatments, vaccines, any of it has been deemed to be 100% effective. Together though all of these steps add up to the best tool to help it die out, before it mutates into something that outpaces our defenses.

I thought the vaccine was going to eliminate the mask??

And I was reading some of the published papers on COVID research in the CDC website's Science section and it looks like there were over 480 mutations of COVID in one test. SMH...

those who had the vax and still got COVID caught it from people who did not get the vax. The assumption, therefore, is that getting vaccinated keeps you from transmitting it, even though it doesn't keep you from contracting it.

The bottom line is that we have NO IDEA who those who tested positive AFTER getting the vax contracted it. If you can catch it after getting the vax, then it would follow that you could still transmit it as well. Logic.

One more thing about Remdesivir is it was basically ready and waiting for a Sars outbreak because effective treatments are easier to develop than effective vaccines and it had been in the works for at least 4 years. I guess the $800 -$1,000 price per pill knocked it out of contention as a practical solution, so an experimental "vaccine" that wasn't properly vetted was foisted on us. Follow the money.

and every time the virus replicates in a host (an infected person), it can and/or does mutate.

As someone pointed out on this forum a day or so ago, some of those mutations may be resistant to the vaccine while while others aren't.

The point is, the more people who get vaccinated, the less likely the virus can mutate because antibodies stop the virus from replicating and/or mutating.

You better check your science on that statement . If that were true then the flu would have died out after the advent of the flu vaccine .

Your anti-bodies have nothing to do with virus mutation . Anti-bodies in the body help the host fight off infection .

is typically only about 30-50% effective against a given flu season’s dominant strains.

Conversely, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were shown to be 95% effective against COVID. That’s a huge difference in efficacy.

It’s not unreasonable to think that if 80+ percent of Americans had gotten the COVID vaccine, it could’ve been eradicated or at the very least minimized to nearly undetectable levels.

I don’t think so.

In an extent of your own comparison, if the flu vaccine were designed to conquer only one or two strains(targeted) it would achieve much higher efficacy against those strains.

You’re drawing the box around the U.S. assuming time isn’t a variable. If we all had a simultaneous, worldwide vaccine taking ceremony, that would be the gold standard, right?

Biden's original goal was 100 million vaccines in his first 100 days in office. We hit that goal with time to spare. People said that it was impossible to have a vaccine in the time frame that it was developed. We have 3 approved in the US and several others being given elsewhere in the world.

As a country, and even as a world-wide community, in my opinion we have done pretty darn good and are in a much better position than any reasonable person would have thought that we would be in a year ago. Why do so many people feel the need to criticize others? Of people that are higher risk, we are well over 80% vaccinated.

The vaccine has not been approved for 15% of our population. To get to 80% of Americans, we need 94% of the approved population to get vaccinated. Do you really think that is reasonable? If you were 17, and in good shape would you get vaccinated? There have been less than 400 deaths of Americans, 17 and under, due to COVID, and we are likely in single digits of people without other conditions.

Without expecting individuals that have virtually no danger from the virus to get vaccinated, we cannot get to 65% much less 80%. I believe that the original poster is correct and this is going to be something that we are going to have to live with for several years to come. It is not anyone's fault unless you have unreasonable expectations.

Let's be thankful that we are in the position that we are in. There have been millions of deaths world-wide and that is sad to think about. There will be many more and that is regrettable. However, there are very few people who really thought that we would be in this position a year ago. A year from now we will be in a better position still. Go and enjoy your life and enjoy making new friends without worrying whether they have the same opinions on immunization as you. If you don't want to, hide in your house. Amazon will deliver you groceries and you won't have to worry about COVID.

I am going to enjoy my life. That is going to include extensive travel, and hopefully, include getting to know many new people and I will guarantee that part of that will not include me asking if they have been vaccinated. I have been vaccinated and even though I am older, I should be fine even if I contract the virus. If I am not, then I will die knowing that I lived my life and didn't waste it.

Mutations are occurring before the vaccines were even released. Pfizer’s ceo has said the effectiveness of the vaccine drops over time, as much as 10% over 6 months.

Data coming out with infections in vaccinated by the delta variant will surely put a dent in that 95%. Look at the latest studies from Israel related to vaccinated infections. Some of the most vaccinated countries are the ones showing the highest case numbers.

This thing is here to stay. Time to stop pointing fingers and making ridiculous claims and learn to live with it.

"####, why haven’t we had a world wide flu shot ho-down intended to largely eliminate the flu from the face of the planet??"

Because we don't have hundreds of thousands of Americans dying in a year from the flu, and that's without any masks, lockdowns, or social distancing. COVID-19 is about 10 TIMES more deadly than the flu.

If the flu virus was a novel virus that had not gone through billions of iterations where natural selection removed individuals vulnerable to the virus and a natural immunity had not been developed, would that be the case? In a couple of years when COVID has gone through this cycle will that be the case? Since the flu has been as deadly if not deadlier for the younger generation, should they be required to get a flu shot or exempt from the COVID shot?

or did not do by way of vaccination, it would have made no difference since the rest of the world was/is far away from being vaccinated. Every USA man, woman, child, other,it, could have taken vaccine and somewhere in the world a mutation/variate would have emerged and ended up in the US. To blame anyone other than the CCP is ridiculous.

But my uneducated brain agree with the idea it's a flu shot

The difference in my head in terms of vaccination is the belief that if we all got vax, we would SLOW mutations, not stop them..

In doing so, giving the professionals A CHANCE to catch up and come up with something to keep us safe long term.

I agree 100%, and thanks for your honest perspective in your other post.

The point of my post is to challenge the way the vaccine has been marketed by politicians and the media, not whether it should be employed.

In my view there is a wide mismatch in perception between vaccine expectations and reality. If we can reconcile that disparity, we’ll also likely adopt more reasonable, sound policies that protect people and keep life moving forward. A lot of folks can’t endure another repeat of how 2020 was managed. Our system and life itself has to function.

This virus will not be eradicated. That’s not realistic. It will pop up as a seasonal flu for many years. We will need to understand that and live life.

Those historical ailments you referred to weren't a type of virus that mutated this fast. Your comparison is just a straw man. If everyone could have had the vaccine sooner there wouldn't be any variants. So to call it a flu is not only disingenuous,it's also dangerous as the longer we don't achieve heard immunity, the more likely an even worse variant might crop up. Its people like you ...

Was this meant for the original post? The historical ailment he compares it to is the flu. The flu mutates even faster because there are already numerous strains for it to mutate from. As for COVID, there were already variants before the vaccines were ever approved. Herd immunity was a great goal, but I am not sure that it was ever a realistic one. Maybe we will eventually get ahead of it, but the existing vaccines have proved better at mitigating the effects than actually eliminated the disease. It is likely to take a while.

A full narrative, based on none of the facts. Mutations were around before the vaccines. They wouldn’t have prevented anything.

Gibraltar has 99% vaccination and got on it quick. Why are their cases suddenly climbing?

Well, as I recover from my first bout of Covid, I’n reminded that the opinions I espoused in this post were banned on the majority of social media platforms as disinformation.

Saddest part; this experience was just another brick in the wall of the practice of the eliminating voices they don’t agree with under the banner of preventing disinformation.

This behavior further pushes people apart in that the healthy debate on issues simply doesn’t happen any longer.
