UVa head coach "thrilled" to play Clemson, said title game exposed Cavs' deficiencies

Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall is thrilled to be playing Clemson again, saying that last year’s loss in the ACC Championship Game showed the deficiencies in his program. (Photo: Amber Searls / USATODAY) Full Story »

So the loss to us gave him a moral victory in another loss?

I doubt Saturday's outcome is going to be much different from the ACCCG if that's his mindset. They performed ok in the bowl because Florida might actually be more overrated than Georgia, but they still lost and now their somewhat-dynamic QB is gone.

Didnt really read but what can he say? Just throw out some coach speak and show up to play. I suspect the only way they win is we beat ourselves

So glad we could help Virginia improve their team.

Apparently we have had less success improving the coots.

I believe that it starts with what the administration is willing to spend, before any HC can build a winning FB program. Nick Saban or Dabo couldn't win at USUC like they do at Bama or Clemson, if the administration isn't willing to spend the money that it takes to have a winning program!!!

Personally I see what he is saying when he says if you only concentrate on beating the talent level that you have to play year in and out, that is the grove that you allow your team to condition themselves to only playing at that level. To beat the better teams outside of your regularly scheduled games every year, you must recruit and coach to the level that the better teams recruit and coach to be.

Just like before Dabo and his philosophy on how to be a better team than any other team in the ACC, he had to work on recruiting the type of talent to be as good and play on the same level as a Bama, a OSU, or a Oklahoma. With Dabo, he saw an knew that the same O 2 and 3 star recruits on an average recruiting year would never get him and Clemson playing on the same level as the better teams that were loading their rosters up with 4 and 5 star talent. Dabo's mindset wouldn't allow him to settle for the norm that the ACC had settle into, and he brought in coaches that had either played or coached at Bama that knew the mindset of what had to be to compete at that level, plus adding BV that had already coached at the championship level that Oklahoma play at during BV's time with Oklahoma, and Dabo started building Clemson to be a team that could bring in top level talent to play against other teams with top level talent and win, and play for the championships that those elite teams were always playing for. Dabo's philosophy was to play championship FB, and he would never accept being satisfied with playing at the level that the ACC was accustomed to playing. And anybody that takes the time to study what Dabo has done at Clemson, it's clear that he raised the level of the Clemson coaching staff that was able to raise the talent quality to play at a championship level. But in the ACC, a HC has to be stubborn enough to not allow himself to stay in the ACC mindset of being just good enough to win in the ACC!!!

Agree with the comments here. I watched the 4th quarter of their Duke game (UVA was actually losing until then) and their 6’7” receiver was quite impressive.

They didn't learn that much since they looked like crap in their bowl game against an average team.

Bronco is debatably the 3rd or 4th best coach in the ACC including B. Kelly this year. UVA is rising with Bronco and is already beating most ACC schools.

Even after losing Perkins and other key starters, this UVa team is a quality opponent.
They played very physically against Duke, moving the pile, breaking tackles and not giving up broken tackles.
After the first quarter they looked like a team in midseason form.

When I say 'quality opponent' I'm not yet saying they should be ranked. But they would compete with a mid-tier SEC team.
