I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal about it. The kid had one beer. Yes he was under age, shouldn't have done it, but hes a college student. I can guarantee that players on our team do the exact same, and I am sure that they have driven with one beer if not two in their system. If one of our players got caught with possession of Marijuana and prescription drugs (and while some was in his system) then I am positive there have been players that have driven with alcohol in their system. So I agree, its not that big of a deal.

no, he said he had one or two beers, he couldn't remember. If that is a Clemson player the news would be asking just how many he actually had, not simply agree it was probably one.

I am not saying that it's right to drink and drive
I tell everyone that I know if you drink call a cab, call a tow truck or call me no matter the time.
I will not throw any rocks because I have in my younger days, I have driven while drinking yea sometimes at the same time.
Way too much to lose by drinking and driving with today's enforcement & laws
If someone has a B/A above a .01 and is involved in an accident where someone gets hurt most likely will get prison time, above a .08 DUI will get more time than the thug that took a gun and robbed a store.
It's all about the $$$$ and insurance companies are putting millions towards enforcement of DUI.

I'm really curious to know...Is there anyone on this message board that did not drink underage? I'm not condoning it but props for at least being smart enough to cut himself off and stay below the legal limit if he was planning to drive to drive. The whole underage thing is stupid to me. I remember being in high school and my dad letting me drink a beer with him on gamedays. Of course only one tho.

McAvoy's level was .02 and he was stopped in NC. He did not have alcohol in his possession. In NC, any alcohol in your system is against the law if you are under 21. Not sure if that is even a law in SC.

Your way off on that man. If you get caught underage drinking most of the time they just give you a ticket. It really is no big deal. Had a friend with a academic scholly and got underage drinking ticket and it was practically nothing. If everyone lost their scholly for underage drinking in college no one would be in school.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So Spurrier believes drinking and driving is no big deal

I guess if they really wanted to they could throw the book at you. Typically its a 100 dollar ticket and if they dont show any mercy for a first time offender they will suspend your license for 90 days. The second offense will however make you lose your scholarship.

No big deal really
In SC your DL will be suspended for 3 months
cost $500 to get them reinstated
lose palmetto life scholarship until you go thru ADSAP school, insurance going up
so if you don't mind not being able to drive have plenty of money to just throw away, hey I guess its no big deal

Not a coot. Why don't you sit down and be quiet YOU dumb coot. Kid drank one beer and drove home. I'm just being fair. If he was over the legal limit pull his scholly and say goodbye. If sammy gets caught driving with illegal drugs and gets two games what do you want to give a kid drinking one beer and getting a speeding ticket. From what he blew on the breathalizer he could have blew that from taking cough medicine.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: brookyb

Aug 6, 2012, 12:06 PM [ in reply to brookyb ]

You are wrong. I actually had a similar situation happen to me personally when I was younger. I got pulled over after drinking two beers (I was 20). I even had the case in the back of the truck with the two beers missing from it. I wasn't charged with DUI as you say, and I wasn't even charged with possession for the beer that I drank. I was charged with minor in possession of alcohol for having the beer in my truck, I was also charged with open container because the box was opened.

I was arrested taken to jail, PR bonded out, went through pretrial intervention and it was expunged from my record. My license was never suspended and it couldn't be lawfully suspended or revoked for those charges either. Don't claim what you're saying as fact when you don't know what you're talking about.

And actually as long as I'm at it I'll go down your list:

I did not get my DL suspended for any amount of time, not even a day.

It obviously did not cost me $500 to have them reinstated since they weren't suspended.

I did not have to go to ADSAP school (pretty sure this is only for DUI's)

My insurance did not go up.

Thanks buddy.

He's a third string qb, how exactly is he going to contribute to us winning games? Secondly, how do you punish a 3rd string qb? Tell him he wont play the first 3 games, he wasnt going to anyways. The only punishment would be to kick him off the team which is far too severe for merely drinking a beer or two and getting in a car.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Miss practice? No team meetings or workouts?

Aug 5, 2012, 1:38 PM

Don't even dress out for the game? Attend seminars? Public service? Give public message about how you shouldn't drink and drive (ah, your coach did that already, glad to see it took effect).

Punishment for violating usuck "rules" or breaking the law is quite nebulous in chickentown.

Aug 5, 2012, 1:46 PM [ in reply to Re: So Spurrier believes drinking and driving is no big deal ]

he should be inventive enough to find some sort of punishment that means something. THAT is what a decent coach that cares about his players should do. Make him attned AA meetings. Make him talk to families that have lost or been effected by drunk drivers. There are plenty of ways to punish.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: As a coach....

he broke the law, was arrested (following in the noble tradition of so many chicken athletes) and suffered no team related punishment.....do you think thats right???

This, of course, after pos hypocrite Steve Spurrier did a public service announcement reminding everyone that drinking under the age of 21 is AGAINST THE FREAKIN' LAW!

Attend AA? Forced talks to drunk driving victims? Why? He wasn't drunk?

You people would have been willing guards at Viet Namese reeducation camps.

For what it is worth, I thought an appropriate "punishment" for Sammy was to run steps for getting caught.

Aug 6, 2012, 2:01 PM

I'm not judging either player bc i've gotten a drinking ticket, but here's the bottom line and where the comparison is...

Sammy: misdemeanor ticket. two game suspension
coot: misdemeanor ticket. no punishment.

theyre both misdemeanors. and sc does have a DUAC charge but its still not the same, so the tickets really arent that comparable except, theyre both misdemeanor tickets and theyre both the result of college kids doing dumb college things.

the main diff is that one of the college kids is held to a much higher standard..
