Same thing as many other big name teams are doing, getting beat by teams that also have 85 scholarship players who have more will to win.

They continue to build a roster full of South Florida high school all stars. They need to get some new blood, some players from outside of South Florida, need a whole new mentality.

Mario Cristobal is one of the most overrated coaches in CFB. On paper, he recruits a lot of 4 and 5 star players but it never translates to the field.

It probably doesn't help that their were only like 10,000 fans in attendance.

They are debating if this loss to Middle Tennessee or the 2019 loss to FIU us worse.

FIU has not won a game against a FBS team since 0-23 and just pulled a Geoff Collins and allow 73 points in their last game.

They think the last is worse but they were a 6-5 team in 2019 and weren't ranked.

However, I think they are forgetting on of the worse...

They seem to have forgotten when they were good they "did not have a foundation built solely on speed"! When they were good; they started by building their team from the inside out.
DL/OL have to be on point 1st. They get plenty of skill players to be consistently good, but can't seem to attract top-caliber OL(in particular) and DL players. Sentrell Henderson I believe his name was; is perhaps the last really good OL I can remember going to Miami.

They need to reach up to Big 10 country and see if some of those kids want to get out of the snow and play in Miami for a few years! Maybe get some of those Wisconsin recruits.

If a fast RB or good QB and WR are not given a chance because the play is blown up early - all that speed does no good.

On defense - if the opponent is 5 yards downfield before my fast LB and DB's make contact - it's a losing formula.

Build their team on the line of scrimmage and you would see a different Miami team. Same could be said for FSU. Really, any team that wants to compete for Championships had better recruit and evaluate and coach well at DL and OL.

I think it is more than just that...

The talent from Florida has been declining for while. In the 90s and into the 00s, they had enough HS talent to fuel THREE national champion level programs at three schools. In addition, if a smaller program like USF or UCF ... or an out of state school landed a decent Fla kid, it did't hurt.

Now, they don't have the talent level to fuel a single national power, let alone deal with smaller schools poaching or out-of-state sniping. Just look at the struggles of USF, FIA, UCF etc. They don't have the player base either.

It has been a point of criticism that while Florida can produce athletes, their coaching/development has been lacking from the earliest of the youth leagues to the HS kids. Their kids are far behind those of Georgia and Texas, as well as Alabama, Louisiana, and even the North East etc. You can see in the Miami game, their skillsets are underwhelming. Poor tackling, poor lines, poor positioning, poor attitude.

FutureDoc Insightful answer! I think that you are on to something there. A case study being the now Hurricane Frank Ladson. When he got here; I thought for sure we would have a stud who was use to going against future CFB CB's. But, no. He seemed to struggle with press coverage and physical play period.

His speed was good; but not great. You know for years you hear about that Florida speed. I think there is still plenty of talent in Florida - but is it being coached up as you said is the question. Or is everyone just pumping some of those kids up if they have the measurables? < - - - - that's what I think. 6'4 and can run a bit - even if you really aren't a play maker you'll likely get pumped up higher because your from a "football state"!

I'd like to take this moment to point out that some of the biggest WR's in our recent run were from South Carolina.
Hunter Renfrow - Socastee, SC
Deandre Hopkins - Central, SC
Mike Williams - Summerton, SC

On the current team the WR's who have made splash plays: Antonio Williams of Irmo, SC and Adam Randall, Myrtle Beach, SC.

Was Sammy Watkins the last great WR we got from Florida? Well, if you see Ray Ray McCloud great he would be the latest.

All of that to say, I hadn't thought of that angle, but I think you are right FutureDoc.

Thanks!

And it isn't like Fla can't and will not produce very good talented and skilled players - the state does that based on population alone. It just will not produce that level of talent across multiple programs with the "win now" mindset. Even states like Texas that is producing a lot of talent has the issue of that talent being divided across a lot of schools (and no championships). But a lot of those Texas players are much more ready skill-wise entering college. When was the last time you have seen a "NFL ready" QB from Florida (and I am not talking about Tebow or even Winston from Alabama - Lavar - Louisville, Mac Jones - Bama, Mathew Stafford - Jawja, Brisset NCSU... That is a lot of QB talent that didn't stay instate.

But also note, when Fla State, Florida, and Miami were rolling, Bama, Georgia, and even little ol'Clemson was in some of our darker times. So they recruiting gravitational force doing some of the poaching.

However, as you noted, some programs where development is prioritized will generate a lot of Florida talent to the NFL. However, FSU/Miami/Florida has not been working at it from this angle in a while.

Oregon fan here. I have answers

Sep 26, 2022, 1:37 PM

UO is my second team after Clemson

Cristobal is a savage recruiter who really knows how to bond with parents and lineman, in particular. However, he has three major flaws that were clearly on display at Oregon:

1 His concept of offense is very bland and easy to defend. 15 years ago, this stuff worked. Now college defenses are a lot more sophisticated and you must have a diverse attack that keeps defenses guessing. Everyone can see what Justin Herbert is now. Believe you me, Mario Cristobal did everything possible to keep Justin Herbert in check at Oregon. UO fans now understand why Herbert was so inconsistent despite his incredible ability.

2 He is a below average game-day coach. He made so many bone-headed decisions it made me wonder how he was a D1 coach. Oftentimes, the Ducks won despite Cristobal, not because of him.

Here is the one that will surprise you,

3 There is something toxic about the guy that comes out after a while. At UO, he was the DC for Taggart, was popular with the players and everyone was relieved when he was elevated. However, early on there were signs of players just not liking the guy.
After the famous win at Ohio State, the team never took the field with the same, swag, confidence and energy. Utah beat the literal snot out of them twice later in the year. It was very obvious the team (or a portion of players) had quit on the guy. When the Miami talk started, UO fans didn't complain because most wanted him to go. In fact, if Miami hadn't come calling, I'm not sure he would have returned to Eugene. It was a REALLY negative environment.

When Willie Taggart bolted for FSU, UO fans were incensed. When Cristobal left, nobody was mad because (I think) everyone realized it was for the best.

One of the announcers during the MTSU game said there might be locker room issues at Miami that are getting in their way. I'm curious if this is an early start to the toxicity that comes with Cristobal.

@MMoCity Wow! That's quite the run down.

He will probably get a longer rope because of his recruiting prowess though!

Some guys aren't cut out to be the head guy. Sounds like he would be very effective as an assistant/recruiting coordinator, but not a game day decision maker. Either way, the natives will get restless with all the NIL money their boosters are paying out and still dropping a game non-competitively to Rick Stockstill and MTSU.
