So on the punt return TD called back

Nov 20, 2021, 7:17 PM

because Will Brown started to call fair catch but changed his mind but the ref said he did anyway, did the refs blow the whistle or does it even matter? I couldn't hear a whistle on the television during the play or when they showed the replay. Would have been 17-3 in the 1st quarter.

That was a nice return. Can't remember the last time Clemson returned a punt for a TD.

Yes. It was right in front of us and the ref stayed right there and blew the whistle way before he reached the end zone. As much as I hated it, it was the right call.

They did not blow the whistle. I agree with the refs he made the motion but it was extremely irresponsible to allow the play to continue. Especially if player safety is so important.

Good point. If someone had gotten hurt downfield on a dead

ball play, that would have been irresponsible of either the refs or the players if they ignored a whistle. But I can't see why he would have continued to run if he had heard a whistle.

One ref stood right at the point of the catch and was blowing his whistle and waving his arms over his head signaling the play was dead way before the play was over. The crowd was just so loud you couldn’t hear the whistle. It was right in front of us and I was pointing at the ref before Will ever crossed the goal line. It was literally right in front of us. You just missed it and most people did because they were watching Will apparently take it to the house.

The announcers didn't see or hear it either

Nov 20, 2021, 7:29 PM

since they said nothing about it until after the play.

Everyone except the one official ran with the play. He threw the beanbag down and stood right over it waving his arms signaling the play dead. He had to be blowing his whistle.

It was the correct call. His hand wave went above his shoulder pad level

Nov 20, 2021, 7:57 PM

I hated it for him but it was the right call.

Actually, by rule, to call a fair catch you must wave an arm above your head. He did not do that. If he had been laid out by the punting team and fumbled, it would NOT have been ruled a fair catch by rule. The referee was in error.

Correct!

That is technically correct but it is not called that way. You see a lot of fair catch signals that never go above the head.

He did. But what’s weird is if he called fair catch then there should have been a penalty for running after fair catch. Thought they gave away 10 yards there.

Agreed if he called a fair catch, then there should have been a penalty.
