Sounds like they're worried that if people lose the profound experience of pondering the night sky, their funding will probably dry up.

Probably because they are exceptionally bright and well educated. Meanwhile, conservatives are busy in Family Dollar buying up Milky Ways before they disappear all together.

Basic US Economics. Step 1. Gov. collects a ton of tax $ and then borrows even more from China. Step 2. Politicians award their friends huge Gov. contracts, for the real big ones they stage a crisis to justify the bill or the contract. Step 3. Split the profits and laugh at all the hard working citizens paying taxes. It is redistribution of wealth to the select few, and no one has any authority to stop it. I guess it could be worse, we could be giving all our money to a dictator or a family who would get to spend it all.

Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Bangkok? Depends where you are where there is no light interference. They have similar issues in the Southern Hemisphere depending where you are standing and attempting to observe. There are spots in the Northern Hemisphere without light pollution obstructing observation as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No and No

Jun 11, 2016, 1:21 PM

There are way bigger issues going on than lights in cities. It's all the same system, conservative or liberal. You just have to have 2 sides to call it a democracy. Even if you shut off half the lights in big cities you still would not be able to see much. That is what camping is for, tents are cheap. A couple PB and Js and you can watch stars all night.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's what I am saying..

Jun 11, 2016, 1:42 PM

depends where you are in either hemisphere. You have to be away from the city lights. Sweden has some of the best around. The best places I have seen the clearest skies without light pollution were at Mauna Kea in Hi, Chicama Peru, and the Canary Islands. I have seen some amazing night skies while camping in New Mexico as well. There are all kinds of spots and there is no shortage. The list is endless where you can go. I have never been to Canada and there are some amazing places in Canada that are supposedly second to none. There are spots all over the planet, but most the people on planet Earth live around metropolitan areas, so of course they don't see the stars clearly and defined. You just have to get away from big cities.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just drive out to the country. Get away from the lights.

Jun 11, 2016, 5:36 PM

Many cities/states already require Dark Sky compliant exterior lighting. Basically light fixtures cannot have any light above the horizontal plane of the fixture itself. Zero up light.

Re: so now conservatives hate the stars?***

Jun 11, 2016, 1:58 PM

Most conservatives live outside of the city so as a party they could care less. Liberals mostly live in the city so technically they are the ones doing most of this pollution. Less lighting means less money for the energy company. People are starving all around the world and we are whatever trillion in debt, but we should probably spend a bunch of money changing out all the lights in the city so people can see a hint of the Milky Way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you could say that about anything

You could say it about anything yet we still spend money on garbage like this when there are actually things we need to spend money on. The things we need to spend money on have to correlate with the financial interests of the politicians friends. Borrow money, give it to your friends, let the future generations deal with the 20 trillion in debt and the enventual default. Thanks.

Noo, not at all.

Conservatives hate everything that doesn't fit into their 1940's 'white makes right' world view.

Stars are actually pretty safe from conservatives...unless they have oil in them. If they do they'll be invaded, destroyed and then occupied for 15 years to make it a Democracy.

Re: Liberals have invented a new crisis ...

Jun 11, 2016, 5:10 PM

I just have to ask, have you ever seen a true night sky? One that is not hidden by millions of light bulbs. The night sky is a truly beautiful thing. Far more beautiful than any neon light or streetlamp. The stars and the constellations inspired many of our oldest stories, and the birth of our religious beliefs. They are part of who we are.

So, when they disappear in a haze of wasted light, it's cheapens all of us. Personally, I'd rather see the light of the stars than the light of a streetlamp or my neighbors house or all all night diner. But, I guess that's part of why I choose to live in Idaho.

I don't care about y'alls politics. Liberal, conservative, little green man from Mars party. It doesn't matter. What is important is that we treasure the beauty this world gives us and ask ourselves just how much we are willing to waste in the name of convenience.

Peace and go Tigers!
