Apparently so. If they drop 8 into coverage we can't throw downfield and those pesky 3 down linemen had a devious plan to push around our 5 interior linemen and tight end. We have seen that work to perfection in 2 or our 3 games - think NC State may attempt such a bold scheme?

If Tony would have kept feeding Shipley and Pace the fb every down, the GT defense wouldn't have been able to keep up with the drop 8 coverage bc those 3 left to produce pressure would have been gassed. But like Tony has always done, when something is working, he won't stay with it until our opponents stop us, Tony stops us, just like against GT, Shipley disappeared for a quarter.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for playing whoever is on the side lines waiting a turn to play, but when the game is still very much up for grabs, stay with what's working until they stop it, and when they stop it, that means they have opened up another avenue that we can exploit!!!

If you listen to the comments he kind of back tracks and says half the game with the 3 deep look… bc I was there and many many times pointed out by me and ppl around you could watch the two safeties inching forward every play… they were within 10 yards of the line most plays … but again you have to trust your wr sometimes to go make plays … unfortunately they aren’t gonna be wide a$$ open every attempt

spot to that. If we can't, we are NOT a very good team. Period. If a far less talented opponnent like GT can shut your offense down and take you to the wire by making a simple, very basic defensive adjustment, and you can't adust and overcome that with relative ease, you have some MAJOR problems.

Once again, we only had 3 second half possessions. 2 of the 3 were twelve play drives. I'm not saying our offense doesn't need some work, but it's laughable to say GT shut our offense down in the second half.

You understand that we only managed 126 yards passing

and 284 yards total, and that with our mighty, legitimate top-5 defense, GT out gained us with 309 yards, and because of our offensive struggles, be barely hung on to win against a vastly lest talented team, right? I mean, you're not trying to spin this into something other than our offense is inexcusably terrible, are you?

The two 12 play drives shows they actually did

figure something out. It was just not flashy. They ran DJ and Shipley, and it worked. It's just the complete opposite of the big play extravaganza we've become accustomed to.
I cant remember a game where we had just 8 drives. And were 9-15 on 3rd down. It was like we entered a time warp to the 80's

GT ran the play clock down below 5 seconds almost every play. They were very obviously trying to limit our possessions. We did not take advantage of enough of those possessions and that kept the game close. We rotated backs for the first few games to see who was going to separate from the others. We have found our running back so the rotation will probably slow down some. Should help with consistency. We may become a run first and run to set up the pass team this year. Won’t be as exciting as we are used to but it can work.

Can we remain a playoff football team, or even a top 10

football team with that style of play, with those kinds of wins? If so, I'm with you - no need to panic, all is good. If the answer to that question is no, then it's time to stop with rationalizations and admit there is a problem that is very disappointing given our stockpile of talent.

Cloud coverage has 2 vulnerabilities and 1 potential personnel issue.
1) interior runs 2) flood routes 3) the DB that has the deep half of the field can potentially be beat to the spot on a deep corner from the slot receiver if they have enough speed (Ladson).
Against GT, the O clearly started to exploit 1) but not 2) or 3).

For those that parrot our coaches and say we are just taking what they give us. Understand this, good teams impose their will no matter the scheme. We need to take shots down field. If not, our running game will continue to struggle and our short passing game will get jumped for a pick 6 (GA).
