So if our receivers don’t have a good year this year

2

Apr 16, 2023, 8:02 PM

are we still going to blame DJ for hindering their development, or just go with the old standby of having a new offensive coordinator who is still installing his system?

This assumes that our WR group is relatively healthy. If they aren’t, then obviously injuries will be the go-to.

Yeah but Clemson baseball is successful and Clemson basketball isn't. So there is that. Maybe you just need to switch sports and you won't be so angry all the time.

I am proud of the great year we just had.

The angry ones are those who act like we are horrible and Brownell is horrible and think we should be an NCAA Tournament team every year even though we don’t provide the support necessary to expect that.

What support do we need?

Come on, finally clarify the exact areas of a basketball program that you need to add fund towards for the expectation to be NCAAT every year? We just renovated our coliseum, it’s not like we had bad facilities before the Neff decision.

Also, don’t spend $40 million on a new facility when you could use $40 million to get an elite coach and actually change things. The coach matters for results.

I’m done, I feel like it’s January.

To make the NCAAT every year but more than 3 out of 13 would be nice. And not losing as a one seed at home in the nit would be a breath of fresh air. That’s how the year you’re so proud of ended. You are what’s wrong with athletics. Satisfied with mediocrity and a barrier to progress. Congrats!

As for the Bradster, not horrible but mediocre at best. There isn’t another P5 school in the country that would hire him, and certainly not for the amount that he is currently stealing from Clemson annually by fraudulently claiming to be a coach.

Is mediocre the best Clemson should hope for in a basketball coach? You and your irrational emotional cult say yes, but it seems as if most on here disagree.

JK

So is basketball your main sport? I find it possible that at least 1 person out of all the true Clemson fans could care more about basketball than football. It’s a major sport.

If so, it shows all of your beliefs about Clemson as a program. You prefer the administration put less towards football, and give basketball its funding to be a major competitor. You have on more than one occasion covered up Brad’s issues with Dabo’s own disappointing recent seasons with all the money he gets.

No one here ever expected to make the NCAAT every single year. But more than 3 every 15 years with what we have is extremely possible.

If you're only looking at the ACC portion of our schedule it was a good year, not great. We definitely lucked out in not getting the tougher teams twice. When you throw in the non conference and post season it was definitely not a great year. Not even good. Very average which is Brownell's MO.

I feel great about our WRs. In 2015 we had an injury prone Peake, Ray Ray, Artavis and freshman Renfrow. I think comparatively, this year has more NFL talent than that year and we were an onside kick away from winning the natty. QB could be close to equal and running game/defense may be better than that year. To focus solely on WR is ignorant of what we've done in the past. Deion cain was suspended for the playoffs and we still managed to move the ball on elite teams.

Maybe you just dont know that much about Clemson football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apr 16, 2023, 11:16 PM

It isn't that I had to go back that far, it's an example of being elite without an elite WR room. The only starting WR in the NFL on that playoff team is a walk on. Not hard to grasp. It does seem that the only negative you're grasping at is 1 position group on the team. You want us to lose so badly it's sad.

Not to interrupt the more than just campaign against JK, but I have to call foul on several of your statements here. I'm not sure of anyone that has said they feel great about this years WR's. I would take that group all day over this one. Ray Ray and Renfrow are still in the NFL. Peake and Scott were there for a few years. We'll see how Williams turns out but right now I wouldn't necessarily say you could project him as a long term NFL guy.

And to say that Cade may be better than DW was that year. That is one hell-u-va bold statement. RB room is better but I definitely would wait and see before we say this years Def is better. I couldn't disagree with you more on the totality of that statement but we shall see.

I'll sign up for that right now. Close to DW4 that year would be outstanding. I think Cade is capable but we don't have near enough to go on right now to suggest that is likely. That would be best case scenaio this year for Cade and the WR's don't seem to compare to that years group. Not saying it won't happen. My fingers are certainly crossed but not gonna hold my breath.

You can’t just keep doing this. It is so clear that basketball did not have a “much better” year. We’re honestly having a pretty similar season. The RPI is in the same range of where basketball was mid season.

But it’s unnecessary to claim “much better”. If you lose 1st round NIT at home to Morehead St, you can’t say much better unless the baseball team loses the rest of their games.

ACC basketball is much less difficult than ACC baseball. At least this year.

Take a second to look at the RPI for college baseball and see how many ACC teams you see right near the top. Not counting our out of conference opponents. Our SOS for basketball wasn’t even close to baseball.

That said, no I don’t. But I think we’ll finish better than basketball. Which is truly what we care about. Not the ###* ACC who we’re going to end up leaving soon anyways.

Sorry Judge, a third place finish in the ACC is not a 'Great' year. Not when you lost to last place Louisville. Not when you don't make the NCAA Tournament. Not when you lose to Morehead St. in the first round of the NIT. It's all about expectations, and once again Brad didn't fill any.

are we still going to blame DJ for hindering their development, or just go with the old standby of having a new offensive coordinator who is still installing his system?

This assumes that our WR group is relatively healthy. If they aren’t, then obviously injuries will be the go-to.

Well, this Tiger fan will tell it like it is. Our receivers are awful at this point. OL is a work in progress again. Cade WILL BE better than DJ. LR will be better than street. This is not a great team or playoff team by any stretch in my mind but at least we will spread the field and complete some balls to the the TE's and backs down the middle of the field.
I get where your going. All of DJ's problems were not on DJ. Agreed. But his lack of accuracy took away half the field and he never got to his second progression. If the receivers are bad we will just say they are bad. If Cade is off, we will say he needs work. I'm not expecting a miracle with the WR's we have but we should expect some improvement. Time to let go of DJ. He's gone and the team will move on.

Hahaha just gave you a thumbs up on the other one. Who blamed DJ for our receivers development? All the years they played football I am sure they never were taught to catch balls out of their reach or behind them. Development was and is on Grisham. It bothers me that when PJ was hurt and we lost, then injuries explained our losses. Yet when we have the majority of our WRs injured then it cannot be used as an excuse. Apply same logic to Brownball and be intelligent about it and people can have a healthy dialogue with you.

To answer your question, I did earlier.

“No, DJ was such a bust he actually stalled the development of each receiver he played with.

I’ve said it before, put Collins, Ngata, or whoever else with CJ Stroud or top QB, they’re going to be incredibly better. It’s the QB. There were more missed throws and sacks taken than there were drops and missed routes.

Need to start getting guys like Deon Cain and Ray Ray again. Weren’t the most elite ever at Clemson, but were greatly coached to use their instincts and speed. Something that none of our current guys have except for 1 or 2.”

This was a reply of mine earlier, and think it’s true.

After you asked who blamed DJ, I really lost track of what the hell you were saying.

Sorry I have no qualms with you. I understand and agree with what you are saying. My comments was more a dig at how poorly DJ performed passing the ball. In what I am saying, I actually was kind of agreeing with the statement. I skipped all the back and forth with the OP because all he does is write ignorant stuff and my father taught me to never argue with a fool.

for an extended period of time, it’s understandable that it can explain the team’s performance not being 100%.

That’s not close to the issue with our WRs, because it can’t be argued that an injured receiver was one of our best players recently. In fact, we haven’t had an elite receiver on our team in terms of performance in a long time.

We have talented receivers, based on high school tape and recruiting rankings, but they don’t develop much at Clemson. That’s on Grisham, Streeter, and (gasp!) Dabo.

I will blame Brad Brownell.

In all seriousness, what would it matter if the receivers don’t have a “good year” but we still are acc champs and make the playoffs?

I don’t care if the receivers get us 300 yards per game or if our backs do. Winning is what matters.

Losing to Morehead State at Littlejohn should also matter. Does it?

If it seems to you that I am triggered then you have misinterpreted the tone of my written words. I was merely attempting to create a dialogue.

I am not the type of person to get excuses ready if something doesn’t go my way.

I used to be that type of person, but in 9th grade my English teacher deliberately placed a sign above my desk that read, “excuses only satisfy those who make them.”

I do not intentionally make excuses to this day. I know plenty of fans and posters who do. Be it football or basketball.

When convenient they'd blame injuries........as if injuries are what made this WR room have no talent.

DJ was NOT good, but Streeter and the WRs have been far worse than DJ over the last 2 years. Now that excuse #1 is at Oregon State & #2 is in a demoted analyst position at Georgia everyone finally sees the FINAL problem that needs to be solved to get Clemson back to CFP caliber.

There was not one single answer.........there were MULTIPLE problems and WR is the last remaining that needs fixed................Not sure it can be fixed this year or even next w/o a difference maker HS recruit or Transfer (and that's not happening)

abound. If it's not DJ, it's injury. I am sorry, but I am not convinced that a healthy Will Taylor is going to make us WRU again.

Also, Collins is so so and we've seen enough of him. Heck, we've NEVER seen Stelltato (spelling is probably off here, who knows). Spector is not good but we are forced to play him.

When we did see Randall, he's been alright but nothing like Dabo promised.

We got Turner and Williams and beyond that is a mystery. Well even Turner is a bit of a mystery. A few years ago, Williams would have been our third best WR, now is miles ahead of anyone else.

We whiffed on Ladson and Ngata.

The truth hurts but out of seven scholarship players (not counting the freshman), one is definitely WRU material, one might be and the rest definitely not. None of the freshman were top 50 WR recruits btw (let that sink in).

That group went from the strongest to worse and everyone points everywhere but the staff. Its hilarious yet sad to watch the pumpers trip over themselves to make excuses for Grisham.

I am with the firing of Grisham. Taylor was brought in an athlete if I remember correctly. I think he played QB in high school and nobody thought he was going to be a great receiver coming into college. Ladson and Ngata did not live up to the potential or were not coached by Grisham or Dabo to become what they felt they would be. Yet Ngata will probably be drafted. Collins started to have flashes of becoming a solid receiver, but injuries got him last year. Same with Randall. Yes I heard the hype, but I have not saw it yet. Stellato has had the weakest knees in the history of WRs at Clemson. Really bad luck and will probably never amount to much. The new WRs, we will have to wait and see. As far as evaluating WRs, the ones we got besides Turner, had very impressive offers from other schools, so they must have saw that same ability. Like I stated, if we fail to produce at WR this year then Grisham should be gone. No different than demanding results from Brownell, except I don't want average for 13 years.

Tyler Grisham was the second coach on the field for the Spring Game

Apr 17, 2023, 8:02 AM

he left the locker room so much earlier than the players and was by himself walking on the field

he also didn't come by the fans or show any glimpses of personable coach

i don't think he brings the energy. i don't think recruits respect him. i think he was a questionable replacement for Jeff Scott

In all seriousness, if our receivers still continue to have a mediocre to bad season, it'll just reaffirm to me that Grisham needs to go. I want Grisham to succeed as a coach but at some point there can only be so many excuses. This season is his last chance for me to prove he can mold some of these guys to their full potential.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yeah, its talent thats the problem. He can coach guys up

Apr 17, 2023, 10:23 AM

until the cows come home but the ability is what the ability is. I don't wanna dog our WR corp too much though, they're good players that play hard but no NFL type playmakers. Ohio State has like 3 or 4. We couldn't get one of those guys at Clemson? Recruiting that position should be a no-brainer at Clemson when we're still pulling in top tier talent at QB. I think we're on our way with Riley being here but it would be great to see some guys get some YAC every once in a while. Seems like we have to eek out positive yardage on every play. Still don't see that effortless scheme that just creates yards. And i assume its b/c of talent at WR.

No JK, the appropriate spotlight will be on the position coach. Greenlighting who they recruit and develop is in his wheelhouse. It’s been suspect since Grisham took over as an inexperienced coach. After 4 years, it will be time to move on to a coach with a much better coaching resume.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It sounds like some of you are making Grisham the scapegoat.

1

Apr 17, 2023, 11:35 AM

He's not the only one in charge of WR recruiting or coaching, but you know that.

Dabo has significant influence in who we sign and how they are coached/developed while at Clemson. He also hired Grisham to be his WR coach and now recruiting coordinator.
