So, if a recruit is Muslim, Buddhist, Morman, Atheists,

1

Dec 23, 2022, 8:29 AM

Agnostic, Or one of the other 1000’s of religions out there (not saying agnostic or atheist is a religion) with different beliefs , but are just great people in general. Will CDS still recruit outside of his beliefs?

My worry about bringing church into recruiting is that not all believe the same as CDS and that’s fine. We don’t all have to agree, but we must respect others beliefs. And recruits who believe differently should get the same opportunity as the Christian recruits Dabo goes for.

My question is, if you don’t believe like Dabo does that hurt that recruit?

Go Tigers!

I bought that back in 2014, because I wanted to believe it. But as we move forward through time and Dabo's repeated references to his god (especially this last one), I have come back to the uncomfortable questions about religion and the Clemson Football Program.

And I have no evidence that reassures me that the coaching staff is not mixing the two together inappropriately.

Re: Looks as though Dabo takes loving your neighbor

You better believe Christianity is the big recruiting tool used by Dabo and the staff. How else do you think Clemson happened? There is no doubt in my mind his faith makes coming to play football at Clemson very attractive for parents and especially African American moms. It got us tons of championships so I’m not complaining. I just hope he can get past his thing with the portal or we may not see the playoffs again.

So are you admitting that Dabo is unlawfully proselytizing in his state paid job and that you are OK with his infringing on the religious freedoms of his non-christian recruits and players ?? As long as he wins championships it's all good with you ??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Looks as though Dabo takes loving your neighbor

Dec 23, 2022, 3:04 PM

Infringing on what? Could you possibly be specific? Nobody is entitled to freedom FROM religion. They are entitled to freedom OF religion. They are vastly different. If you believe that anyone is forcing religion on someone else, then more than vague speculation is required. Forcing NO religion is clearly unlawful.

@Tobias27772 he does not make these kids come to Clemson. I have heard multiple players mention their faith. You act like Dabo is the only person that believes in God. Faith and family is a staple of Dabo and the great thing about it from what I have heard is he lives it and the players see it.

It's my opinion that the coots didn't beat us. As much as I care about Dabo, and love about everything he has done for our FB program, I have to say that Dabo allowed his stubbornness to get in the way of Clemson winning the coot game. If he hadn't been so dead set on showing the sports media/ESECPN talking heads, and our fan base that he alone run everything within our FB program, Cade Klubnik would have stepped in after DJ's first couple series of the second half, and we would have beat the coots by 2 or 3 scores. Even though Dabo has said that he didn't regret any decisions he made in the game, I didn't believe that statement for a second after it come from his mouth. If he was as dead serious with that statement as he was with showing the country who run the Clemson FB program, Neff and the trusties should cut his salary bc it would mean he isn't as good a HC as they or the fan base believe that he is!!!! The FB program that Dabo is in charge of running, lost that game without a doubt bc of Dabo's intentions of making a statement about who was in charge!!!!

Is it possible that Dabo has grown to believe that his god is the only way to find the path to better human beings ? When he makes statements like he just did, it causes me to become concerned that he is more about the path to his god than he is about a secular path to good citizenship.

If you have any evidence that this is not the case, please share it with me, because this is an uncomfortable position for me.

I don't think, and I could be wrong, but I don't that I am, Clemson as the institution has never been entangled with any faith, and anybody making that claim should have proof of the accusations they're making with more than a FB HC belief. That is one person of a few hundred employed at Clemson university, and I would be willing to make a wager that there are employees employed at Clemson that never worship to the same God that Dabo worships. Infact, I would bet there are some that worship the dark side far away from Dabo's faith, and the same God that he believes in!!!

Thankfully, everyone has their own opinion. If you would take time to read or listen to Dabo's comments, he used the word God. All of the religions mentioned have a God. Dabo is a football coach, not a Bible Professor so you worry about your soul and Dabo will worry about his players the way any father would worry about his children.

I dont believe that our soul will leave this body and go to heaven like the bible says. When I refer to soul it’s more on a higher consciousness level or energy. I believe there is something after, just not in the traditional bible sense.

I also believe in a god/ higher consciousness, but what that god looks like I have no idea. You loose me with the prophets. Jesus, Joseph Smith, Muhammad, etc.

But why did you ask the question? I ask as Dabo has 12 years as HC and 30 years in the coaching business. Has there ever been a single player or parent with a complaint that they or their child was treated different or poorly based on their religion or belief system? Do you think Dabo could have survived for 30 years discriminating against players who do not share his beliefs without a single complaint?

Normally when people raise a question, they have some basis to believe it is or could be true. Given the lack of evidence what was the basis of your question?

I've been waiting for someone to ask this. When this flared up a few years ago, some players were interviewed (I think this was when they were baptizing players on the practice field). A wide receiver (forgetting his name) equivocated a little, saying that it didn't bother him (he clearly loved Dabo) but admitted that the overt Christianity in the program sometimes made him a bit uncomfortable.

THAT was the whole point. It is a State university. In such a place, if a coach (or professor) is making any student uncomfortable with his foisting of religion on players, that is a serious problem.

Now I love what Dabo has done for the program. And I completely understand that there are players and their families who are certainly attracted to that approach. (Just as I realize that there are people who send their kids to Clemson because it is small town, sheltered, and a conservative environment.) But that does not mean that Dabo should keep pushing it quite the way he does.

He could have easily made the same point without the dopey god's NIL reference. The cynic in me thought it was to distract away from our lack of a competitive NIL program.

Dabo is more concerned about character than religion. I'm sure if a non-Christian recruit does not have a problem with Dabo's belief system, then Dabo would be open to recruiting him. The only people that have a problem with Dabo regarding your topic are the ones who are trying to create a false image of a prejudiced Clemson head coach to damage his program. It won't work.

Because we don't know what is happening behind closed doors, we are left to surmise based on public statements. Dabo's continued references to god (and especially this last one) leads one to believe that his image of family is deeply intertwined with christianity.

One of the fundamental goals and duties of a Christian

Dec 23, 2022, 9:01 AM

Is to spread God’s word. Dabo has clearly demonstrated that he believes that this is one of his main reason’s that he is in the position that he has. In fact I think if Dabo leaves Clemson football it won’t be for another coaching job it will likely be to start some kind of ministry. So in his heart of hearts I think Dabo might be more motivated to recruit someone who is not Christian. He would probably see it as not only a chance to develop an athlete , but also a chance to save a young man’s soul.

Re: One of the fundamental goals and duties of a Christian

Dec 23, 2022, 9:24 AM

Spreading the word is all well and fine until it becomes radical and make no mistake there are radical Christians just like radical Muslims.

Why would Dabo need to save someone who is secure and Happy in their own beliefs? That’s their business just like his faith is his.

That’s my question, can Dabo coach a player who is atheist with great morals without trying to influence said player?

There’s a reason millions have been killed for millennia over choice of religion or lack there of. People can’t take that we are all entitled to our own beliefs and shouldn’t be persecuted for it when you believe differently!

2024 orange level membermilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t think you fully understand Christianity.

Dec 23, 2022, 3:05 PM

Telling others about Jesus isn’t restricted to those who are “bad people” or who aren’t secure in their beliefs. As Christians, we want God’s saving grace for everyone. Because we strive to love others as Jesus loves us, we are concerned about the fate of those who don’t know Jesus as their savior.

Of course, we are not to be forceful and offensive in telling others about Jesus, as that can do more harm than good. But with the Holy Spirit’s help, we are called to share the Good News with others.

People are absolutely entitled to their own beliefs. We can agree to disagree, and we can do so civilly and respectfully. But if I have a wonderful gift and want you to have it too, I’m being a pretty mean and awful person not to tell you about it when given the opportunity.

The problem with Christianity is all the contradictions and this is a good example of one.

On one hand you say “Dabo is not pushing religion”….

On the other a Christian says it’s their job to spread their religion.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is a difference between telling others about it and being pushy about it.

Re: So, if a recruit is Muslim, Buddhist, Morman, Atheists,

Tig

A few of my concerns are:

1. When visiting the home of a recruit, is it easier, more likely for Dabo (and other coaches) to see the recruit (& family) as of high quality if they are overtly christian ? Most people seem to be more comfortable and accepting of people who are similar to them.

2. Do the coaches overtly as recruits or their families about their religion and how important it is in their lives? Do they draw conclusions based on those answers ?

2. If an athlete is straying off-path, can Dabo speak to them about higher expectations without referencing a god that may not be important to that athlete ? If the athlete does not respond well to Dabo's proselytizing, does he end up in the "love shack" because of his actions rather than his beliefs ?

3. Is it possible that Dabo "trusts" a christian player more than he might a non-religious player ? Can that subliminally influence his decisions about playing time ?

Please notice that all of these are questions. I do not know what goes on behind the closed doors of the football program. But when Dabo makes such a religious statement as to say that the entire football program is built in his god's image, it makes the answers to these questions all the more important.

Tob

Thank you for your reply.

Based on all I've read, seen, and heard from Dabo I believe he is honest with recruits. He is not ashamed to say he is a Christian. Players and family members know who he is before they commit to Clemson.

Dabo has stated he recruits good athletes and good character. His goal is that they leave Clemson with a degree and be a better person for life.

I believe he tries to play the best player regardless of that players belief.

I also believe he loves players like family. If he loves them then he would want the best for them. Not force his belief on them or punish them if they don't believe.

As a Christian he believes what the Bible says that God created man and women in His image. I think that is what he was referring to with the NIL statement. Christians are commanded to bolding proclaim the gospel, not convert people. That's up to God.

Dabo loves his players. What parent would not want that?

Tig,

I would like to believe all of that can happen without injecting proselyting christianity into the mix. But when Dabo makes a statement that the entire Clemson Football Program was built on christ, then I have to take him at his word - and consider that he has decided that he can cross that line with impunity. I think that is Unconstitutional - and wrong.

If you are making an accusation of wrongdoing…

Dec 23, 2022, 12:32 PM [ in reply to Re: So, if a recruit is Muslim, Buddhist, Morman, Atheists, ]

It’s up to YOU to prove it. Coach Swinney runs his program according to Christian principles of kindness and morality. There’s been no indication by any former player that he discriminated against them based on religion. If you believe there has been discrimination then YOU prove it.

I have an even better idea Tobias - why don’t you go pull for Standford or UC Berkeley or some other school that proudly demonstrates their dedication to secular humanist, anti-Christian values. That would seem to suit you better.

Secular humanistic values are not anti-christian.

As an atheist, I disagree. I see no observable evidence or logical argument of the existence of a deity, so really doesn't take any faith at all. (I would tritely say that belief in a deity is what requires faith.)

I apologize if I am projecting subtext on you, but if you are suggesting that it takes faith because if I'm wrong I'm going to hell, that is wrong because you are projecting your hell on my scenarios. I'm not showing faith because I could be reincarnated into a fish, either. I'm confident that I'll die and be gone. Full stop.

Sure it does. In every area of life this formula works… a person sees a building, they assume there’s a builder. A person sees a painting, they rationally assume there’s a painter. However, atheists see this world, they see babies being born, they see all of the beautiful, wonderful things that we all see everyday, and they declare that it all came from nothing. Heck, the fact that they can see anything at all is a miracle. Explain how the eye “evolved” from nothing with No designer. So yes, it’s faith in nothing.
I’m a Christian but I understand if people would not want to be or maybe just not believe in the God of the Bible, but to believe that everything you see and experience came from nothing is pure human hubris.

I believe in the wonder of the natural world. That isn't hubris. You seem to need to call it hubris in order to denigrate those with whom you disagree. I see natural things and think about the unfathomable odds that over million of years it came to this and these moments.

“Fairly straightforward” I don’t think so. I just know everything I deal with daily is a fight to keep it going. To make anything good takes effort. Things deteriorate without effort. Oh but not evolution, time and randomness makes things more and more complex. It takes faith to believe that. Even if evolution were true, I’d never believe it wasn’t directed by someone bigger than us.
