So how do you get & keep a good QB2 & QB3?

Dec 3, 2021, 3:45 PM

Everyone wants to play. I get that. They're all competitors at heart and all started at least 1 year of HS, if not 2, 3 or even 4. But not everyone can start in CFB, and every team needs competent backups, as we've seen this year on numerous teams.

So how do you keep a good QB who both you and he knows won't play much, unless the starter goes down for whatever reason, or stinks it up? Some backups languish in obscurity and never play. Some have to rise to the challenge when the starter gets hurt or fails to perform. Neither athletes or coaches know how that will play out, but every team needs someone in the wings ready to go. But if no one wants to be that person....?

I'd just keep a Mac Jones career profile on hand. Not playing early? Just be patient, you'll be rewarded (probably).

You keep the backups when you dont keep them on the bench when they deserve to play.

DJ finished the season as the second worst rated QB in the entire nation with at least 250 pass attempts. That is horrible.

If I was a backup and I didn't receive playing time I would transfer too. If you wont play me now you probably never will.

The problem was we weren't blowing teams out until the last three games. Dabo had to keep DJ in the tight games. Obviously didn't want to lose with a 2nd stringer at the helm. You go with your best pitch. Unfortunately, our best pitch this year was pretty much 85 mph right down the middle.

Did you mean 85 mph to the right sideline for the bubble screen???

No, I mean our best pitch was 85 mph. The bubble screens were more like 40 mph.

I think you have to bring in at least 1 high quality freshman QB every year, and give them the opportunity to compete for the starting position. We didn't really bring in one this year, with the exception of Taylor who is supposed to be more of a WR.

It's just the way it is. Everybody wants to play when they are true freshmen. Everybody EXPECTS to play when they are redshirt freshman. Even quarterbacks. No blue chip QB wants to sit on the bench ofr two years and play 2nd team their third year.

So, coaches have two choices, at least the only two I can think of.

Assume the QB you take this year will be in the program at most 3 years, and probably only two if he isn't the starter his second year.

No need to even consider redshirting him. The only kids who will do that are kids who recognize their next career will not be in the NFL. There are a few out there, but very few.

The only way to build quality depth is to recruit one QB every year who is capable of playing as a back up (in case of injury to others) and capable of starting (in case of injury) and will be more than ready to be a star his third year. Sounds hard. It's even harder than that.

Yes. It would be nice if everyone were like Chase Brice. But even he left after a couple of years. Very frustrating.

This year was different for Clemson and others.
The heavyweights did not blow out tams this year, thus the backups did not get meaningful minutes. They sat.
In prior years, the backup QB would play quite a few series.
Your comment about Mac Jones is a good one. Doubt it happens any more.
