So excited about the Air Raid I can’t stand it

I’ve been a Mike Leach fan since his early Texas Tech days. If a mike leach coached team was on tv and Clemson wasn’t playing, I would watch it.
It’s a relatively simple concept but it’s completely unstoppable when executed well. With talented players it’s absolutely explosive.
No huddle. 80-90% of plays are called at the line. It’s predicated on 3 (triangle) reads by the qb. And the cornerstone is this play called “mesh” that stretches a defense the across the entire field and uses a natural pick of crossing receivers in the shallow middle. Every Clemson fan that watched the tangerine bowl should remember kliff kingsberry running this play 50 times without Clemson figuring a way to stop it.
Good defenses will adjust the LB play to try and take the mesh away. But that’s when a great air raid offense hits you with the “stick”. Another triangle read play that looks indistinguishable from the mesh at the snap but uses a slot stick route and is designed to exploit everything a defense and the LB’s can do to stop the mesh.
Also, expect ship and Mafah to get way more total touches because they will be fully integrated into the passing game.
Next year, Clemson might be the most talented CFB team to have ever truly run the Air Raid. Will be really fun watching over the next few years!

Thank you for the explanation on what to expect from Riley’s play calling. I do have a question. What does Clemson need personnel wise to be successful with this offense against a team like the dawgs?

3 things:
Good RBs, Execution at qb, and some sort of defense
The Air Raid thrives on an effective inside run game after spreading the defense out. Kendre Miller was probably the best player on TCU’s team and he was out. The drop off in talent to the backup running back was staggering. No depth for them there at all and UGA basically got to play against a one-dimensional passing team. We have a 2 headed monster in the backfield waiting to be unleashed!
I actually don’t think the TCU QB is so talented but he benefited from a great system and he executed all year. He had a really bad game vs UGA. Those 2 interceptions were bad and one was a complete mis throw where his intended receiver was wide open. With their RB situation they needed perfection at QB and they got his worst game of the year. Sure UGA’s talent on defense had something to do with that, but he just executed poorly
Let’s be honest too, the way TCU played defense, they could have scored every time they touched the ball and still lost because they had no answer on D.

100% excited about this hire. In the NFL, it seems like a new OC typically brings an entirely new playbook, which is sometimes a challenge the first year as the team learns a new system.
I wonder if Dabo wants a completely new playbook, or will we see a mesh of two similar, but different, systems?

Does the TE play a big part in his offense?

Not as a true tight end, but Briningstool is probably athletic enough to fit kind of a hybrid role that probably fits into Riley's system.

Interesting quote by Mike Leach on TE’s

“Tight ends are a blast if you have them," Leach said in an ESPN article back in 2017. "If you have a true tight end – and I mean a true tight end – then life is good. God didn't make very many true tight ends. Just go to the mall and the big long-armed guys you see at the mall – you'll see a couple, but most of them can't run fast and those that can probably can't catch. So there's not very many of them."

Thanks for the breakdown, I'd wondered what exactly it was all about myself.
One question I have, will this new offense change the type of protection our OL will run? I assume it would but wasn't sure. From what I've read, it seems as though a lot of the whiffs by our OL have been blamed on an OL getting confused on plays. Will this new system simply things for our OL? Thanks

Requires a wicked smart center and athletic OL

The OL does have to be huge but they need to be able to run and get to their blocks. They also play some really wide splits because any d-coordinator with a brain will only use 3 DL fronts. That means they do have to move laterally on the line pretty well.
They will run some screen concepts that really require OL’s to move.
Watched a video Garret Riley did while he was at SMU and how they practice air raid screens. Pretty impressive.
