The term originated in medieval England and literally means “small boat servant”, which is perfectly fitting if you ask me. I can promise you there’s not a single coot who knows this

The cockpit gamecocks are referring to is a big hole dug in the ground. Bets would be made and two game roosters with sharp spurs laced on their legs would be thrown in the pit and they would fight until the bloody death of one of them. That bloody pit of animal cruelty is what they are proudly going to name the section where their students sit.

Cockfighting originated before medieval times. it was used by the the ancient Greeks as a means of firing up getting men ready for battle but originated in Southeast Asia. The first reference in the English language was in a book in 1587 and it was referred to as a pit in the ground where gambling on fighting chickens was held and was called cockpit. The first use as a naval term was in the 1700s and referred to a space in British naval ships usually in the stern and below decks where wounded in battle were treated. The naval cockpit term for small area below deck came from chicken cockpit below ground.
