Because it's always been that way.

I'm reminded of a story....

Apr 13, 2016, 2:03 PM [ in reply to Re: So a segment of the student body thinks.... ]

about five monkeys that one of my professors at Clemson told the class. The experiment involved five monkeys, a cage, a banana, a ladder, and cold water.

The five monkeys were locked in a cage, after which a banana was hung from the ceiling with a ladder placed underneath the banana. One of the monkeys immediately races towards the ladder, intending to climb it and grab the banana. However, as soon as the monkey would start to climb, ice cold water was sprayed on the other four monkeys.

When a second monkey attempted to climb the ladder, the other four monkeys were again sprayed with ice-cold water. The pattern was repeated for the third climber and, if they were particularly persistent, the fourth one as well. Eventually, when one of the monkeys even went near the ladder, let alone attempt to climb it, the other monkeys began beating him up.

The scientists conducting the experiment then began replacing one of the monkeys with a new monkey. As can be expected, the new monkey would attempt to climb the ladder in order to get the banana. Likewise, the other monkeys who were familiar with the cold-water treatment, would run towards the new monkey and beat him up. The new monkey, unaware of the cold-water history, would get the message: no climbing up the ladder in this cage.

Each time a monkey was replaced with a new one, the events would repeat themselves (monkey runs towards the ladder; other monkeys beat him up; new monkey does not attempt to climb again). However, there was one notable detail. The first new monkey, who had never received the cold-water treatment and didn’t even know anything about it, would, with equal vigor and enthusiasm, join in the beating of the newest monkey added to the cage.

When the researcher replaced a third monkey, the same thing happened; likewise for the fourth until, eventually, all the monkeys had been replaced and none of the monkeys in the cage had any experience with or knowledge of the cold-water treatment yet they all joined in the beating of the new monkey although they really had no idea why.

Over the course of time, we all develop routines, habits and practices, which become the “culture” (i.e., losing at $CU). These cultures can be remarkably different, in terms of what sort of behavior they value, what they don’t like to see, and what they punish. Always, these habits and conventions have been developed over the course of time and, often, nobody actually remembers why they were started in the first place.

Whether the story of the monkeys is true or not is irrelevant, but as the story points out, leaders must always question the why of each and every action, process, best practice and policy with which they engage (i.e., continuing to allow students to attend football games and sit in the lower deck at no cost). Otherwise they just become another monkey. The point is, raising questions about the method in which things are done may actually be quite valid. Just because "we've always done it that way" doesn't make it the right course of action going forward.

you don't need a ladder to get to the upperdeck

It isn't free. You better believe the costs of that seat has

Apr 13, 2016, 2:01 PM

already been factored into tuition/fees, etc.

18k students for 83k seats

Apr 13, 2016, 2:08 PM

Should be no issue to have students in for free. And it never has been an issue until this money grab

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seats are still free for students

Apr 13, 2016, 2:11 PM

or they can chose to pay and upgrade

students at most other schools pay significantly more, Clemson should continue allowing its students to attend and sit in lower deck free of charge?

yep. And I've explained a million times

Apr 13, 2016, 2:14 PM

Why Clemson is in a unique situation that we should take advantage of.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

See the story above about the monkeys.

Apr 13, 2016, 2:16 PM

I'm sure students at most if not all other schools also think their particular situation is unique too.

incorrect.

Apr 13, 2016, 2:19 PM

The other schools people are comparing us to have far more students than Clemson does. Not logical for every student to be able to go to the game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK fine....

Apr 13, 2016, 2:27 PM

then let's look at Baylor, a school comparable in size to Clemson.

Rather than charging students $225 specifically for seats in the lower deck, how about if the University just raised the student activity fee to cover this cost?

At Baylor, students are admitted to all athletic events free of charge. However, the student fee at Baylor is nearly $1,500 per semester.

Re: So a segment of the student body thinks....

Apr 13, 2016, 2:18 PM

I would totally hold off on an iPhone upgrade one more year to cover the cost. Yeah, no free lunch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do most schools charge students for tickets?

Apr 13, 2016, 2:19 PM

I never had to pay for football tickets, unless the price was built into tuition or something.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

When are you sending in your $900?

Apr 13, 2016, 4:53 PM

Back pay for the 4 years * $225 = $900 for the free lunches you got as a student? I guess all of a sudden our athletic department is too poor to keep the tradition going... must have been that 747 to AZ.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure....

Apr 13, 2016, 5:28 PM

the cost of season tickets was $225 when I was a student.

I do remember that my ticket to the 82 Orange Bowl was just $15.00 compared to the $400 I paid for Phoenix this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You actually think its free for students?

Apr 13, 2016, 10:34 PM

Compared to the 5 digits most students are paying for school seems far from free man. It just sounds a little greedy more than anything.
