So, 16 teams is too many for a playoff? Maybe 24 works!

Jul 28, 2022, 7:35 PM

The FCS division of NCAA Football has had 16 teams play in a post-season playoff since 1987.
That playoff expanded to 24 teams in 2013, with the top 8 teams receiving a bye in the first round.

Like most traditionalists, I believe money is ruining college football at the upper echelon. But the debate regarding limiting the size of the playoff participants based upon the total number of games played in a season is a bit weak. And yes, as of 2019, FCS teams can schedule a 12-game season.

Enjoy the discussion!

Considering ND State has one 9 of the last 11, everybody else is along for the ride for the most part so doesn’t matter how many teams in the playoffs.

No matter how big and fast you are, your brain is just as

mushy in your skull as the next guy. At the Power 5 level, and beyond, they're all straight up dudes with power, size, and speed well beyond normal. At the FCS level, the sizes and speeds are lesser - the smashes don't pound as hard on brain and bone. And that's on both sides of the ball going at each other, so it exponentials up in a way. The top players are faster and meatier but all that inner stuff is the same.

Also the crowd sizes up top can't just pick up week after week and mobilize to fill another giant stadium somewhere. FCS doesn't have to cater to near those numbers throughout.

I like 4, maybe 5-6. But no more. Two reasons, I love the traditions of college football, it feels like alit is gonna go away. Bowl season with any kind of expansion will probably go away. Yes there are too many where it doesn't mean as much, we already heard that moran qb from fla st put down one of the bowls. Also, it's the greatest regular season in sports, expansion will also diminish this. Besides year in and year out, how many can actually win the championship?

Expand too much and add games will result in

Top level players sitting out to protect themselves.

I was gonna say that also but getting old. Then people that wanted expansion will be blasting the young fellows. It will happen that players sit out of playoffs if it goes 12 or more

8 makes more sense to me...

at least from an initial expansion standpoint. Practically speaking, only about two or three teams really has any realistic chance of winning it all anyway.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.
