Favorite Barbeque place in South Carolina???........

Sep 29, 2021, 1:44 PM

My is and has been Scott's in Hemingway. I love their vinegar-based and peppery pulled pork.

What's yours and why? What's your favorite style of BBQ?

Brown's in Kingstree for the meat, Ward's in Sumter for the hash.

Sep 29, 2021, 2:22 PM

Sweatman’s, Brown’s in Kingstreee, and Duke’s in Orangeburg are all far superior.

Sweatman’s has always had the best hash and best plate overall. Brown’s has as an excellent buffet. And Duke’s in Orangeburg and Elloree is and has been consistently excellent for more than 50 years.

I am a hash connoisseur and I can tell you without a doubt the best hash you will ever eat is not in a restaurant, but from Winningham’s Meats in Ridgeville. They sell it by the gallon.

Shealy's is in Leesville...not Batesburg, and until Jackie Hite died a few years ago, Shealy's wasn't even the best barbecue in Leesville!

A small place off Hwy 378 near Gilbert, that has very good barbecue, is Price's. And for Friday lunch and Saturday dinner, they have the best fried catfish you will find anywhere! Not greasy at all! Price's is one of the few places that still cooks their meat over wood...not gas!

Sep 29, 2021, 2:33 PM

When you say BBQ people take that to mean BBQ restaurant. Also if you’re talking about a restaurant then there’s more than simply the meat. Most everyone does good meat. The overall meal is what is most important. It’s far harder to have excellent hash than good meat.

You should’ve asked who makes your favorite barbecue meat. Because that appears to be the question you are actually asking.

to one because of their hash! Admittedly, hash can vary wildly, but hash isn't why I go to a barbecue place. I'm looking for the pulled pork and pork ribs, and a decent selection of sides is just a bonus. I can be happy with just ribs, some baked beans and some good slaw! There are many places that just don't know how to make even half decent slaw! I will credit Shealy's in Leesville for knowing how to make good slaw!

Go to Lewis BBQ in Charleston. If any restaurant owner in SC went there and had the brisket, they’d call their restaurant and tell them to shut it down, that is if they had morals.

The crap restaurants in the south call brisket is criminal!

But you need to take several things into consideration.

Lewis is in Charleston and most of the folks on here are not and probably don’t get to Charleston very often.

Also, they are fairly new, and yes they have pulled pork, but their specialty is Texas style BBQ.

They certainly would not qualify as a traditional Southern BBQ restaurant.

Swig & Swine on Savannah Highway is older and just as good and they are owned by some Clemson people.

Big T’s BBQ and The Southern Belly BBQ

Sep 29, 2021, 2:26 PM

I work for State Govt and my work allows me to visit every corner of SC. I’m a local Columbia guy and I was reared on Big Ts BBQ in eastern Columbia. Their Big T Dinner (hash, rice and pulled pork) is full of yellow sauce and I can’t get enough of it. I’m not a big fan of anything else they have though. If I’m on the other side of the river (Congaree) in Lexington I tend to find myself at Hudsons or Hites BBQ.

If you are big into pulled-pork sandwiches there is a place in 5-Joints called The Southern Belly. They have every sauce you can imagine. They will even sell any sauce you like if you bring a mason jar. They have many different gourmet signature pulled pork sandwiches. It reminds me of Pauly’s Front Porch (Pauly’s and Southern Belly are neighbors) with their signature one-of-a-kind hamburgers.

I’m not gonna say my BBQ spot is better than yours like you tend to see on some threads. I do like finding new BBQ joints around the state. I may have to try that joint in Pendleton this weekend. Go eat ya some BBQ boys!

Sep 29, 2021, 2:42 PM [ in reply to Big T’s BBQ and The Southern Belly BBQ ]

It really is impossible to say who is best because it is so subjective. To me the entire meal counts. So yes there are places that have amazing meat, but their hash sucks. And most places in South Carolina don’t have traditional lowcountry hash, which to me it’s not BBQ if you don’t have hash and rice.

Not in South Carolina, but...for those that travel to Atlanta...

Heirloom Market in Atlanta is hands down the best BBQ I've ever had.

The Owners of this little dive is a Chef (Cody) who was born in Texas and lived in Memphis, along with Chef (Jiyeon) from South Korea. So think: Texas & Memphis BBQ, meets with sweet, hot or spicy sauces from Korea.

I've taken many friends and family there over the years and they were all very impressed.

McDonald's. The McRib outweighs many of the BBQ places but it is seasonal. To put it into perspective, I have had the BBQ from the original Vandy's in Statesboro, GA and many other places in San Antonio and all over TX.

Don’t be impressed with its curb appeal. I passed by it two times before I saw two guys dressed in suits walk into what looked to be an abandoned gas station. In fact I think the store is still missing the “c” and reads “S otts”. It’s worth saying you’ve had it.

I saw it on a show with Andrew Zimmerman and decided I had to go. It is an old gas station. Showed him making the sauce and putting it on using a mop. Looked fantastic!

How do you keep Gamecocks out of your yard?
• Put up goal posts
What does a Gamecock grad call a Clemson Tiger grad in 2 years?

IMHO, Lewis in CHS is good but it's Texas style beef & brisket. Sweatmans used to be the best mustard-based place in SC but other poasters r right, it's days are over, due to new ownership. McCabe's in Manning is great, as is Brown's in Kingstree. However, I heard Brown's is now going downhill due to Covid killing the owner last yr. Nothing beats Williamsburg County vinegar-based BBQ & comfort Purleau. Rodney Scott's in CHS isn't that bad but his original place in Hemmingway is off the charts good. Cooper's Store in Salters is a hidden gem but it isn't a restaurant. If ur ever in Greenville NC, B's is great, too. Like Johnny Cash says, I've been everywhere, man...it's late but if I give it some thought, probably could name 2-3 of the best places in every deep South state...great topic to get our minds off nancy state, the OL, DJ & CTE

Dukes in Orangeburg! Soft white bread on table and the pork, mustard barbecue sauce and hash. Whew. Circle M in Liberty is the best pulled pork and smoked chicken ever.

I've had BBQ all over the country and consider Big D's in Hemingway the best. Big D's in Conway is second. When I'm in the area, I bring home at least 5 pounds.

I live near Atlanta and was excited that Rodney Scott was opening a BBQ place here. My wife and I went there last week, and that was by far the worst BBQ of my 3/4 of century life.

My stomach has still not recovered, and my response to their website expressed how bad their BBQ really is. I have not been receptive to their follow up excuses nor offers of a gift card.

My wife started taking me up to Cowards on Saturday afternoon with her family to eat at Country Cousins when we first started dating. Unfortunately this establishment has long been closed. Brown's was also a stable source. I am sorry that there are so many fewer places that my in-laws like. Williamsburg County and surrounding area needs some new blood to get the area started.

I'm happy to know I can choose my own BBQ restaurant, meat house, drive through or home delivered by Amazon, FedX, UPS or the USPS and whether it is pulled, jerked or chopped pork. If there is some good BBQ on the table, I consider myself to be in hog heaven.

Bessingers in West Ashley (Charleston) is as good as it gets. I forgot my wallet once and they didn’t make me wash the dishes, so I have to recommend them.

topnotch. But, I know they changed owners a few years ago, haven't heard whether they are still good or no.

In SC we are blessed with some great BBQ places.

For my money the best ribs and chicken are from Ronnie's Ribs in Elgin. Everything else is great too.

When traveling from ATL to Clemson for a game, I ALWAYS stop at Little Pigs in Seneca for a meal.

For the Upstate of SC:
- Best Eastern NC style (vinegar based) chopped pork plate is Southern BBQ off I-85 near Boiling Springs (similar to Bridges BBQ in Shelby, NC with red slaw)
- Best Pulled Pork and Brisket at one restaurant - Bobby's BBQ in Fountain Inn
- Best Brisket (Consistently Good) Smoky Dreams - Woodruff Rd. Greenville
- Best Hash - Holden's Ranch in Spartanburg - SC has about 3 or 4 variations of Hash by Geography and I prefer the Gaffney, Spartanburg area hash the best
