SMH in Disbelief

Sep 15, 2020, 2:06 PM

There have been so many posts critical of Coach Swinney since the game Saturday. “He’s lost control of his team.” “He doesn’t know what he’s doing.” Some even went so far as to call him “un-Christian” and said, “he’s not going to Heaven.” Those are particularly disturbing since I believe Jesus was clear on not judging and I do not think anyone on this board has catapulted to the level of making decisions about someone going to Heaven……. or not.

There is one thing we do not know and one we do. We do not know Coach Swinney’s personal position on BLM, or any other political issue for that matter. And good for him for keeping those personal beliefs to himself. The thing we know is he supports his team. Anyone who has held a leadership position knows that a leader is part of the team and has a responsibility to articulate that support. He has handled this difficult issue extremely well.

It seems a lot of the criticism is because so many assumed Coach Swinney’s beliefs would line up with theirs. Assumptions can be extremely dangerous things. Again, we do not know his personal views but let us just pretend for a second they are not what so many wanted. Would that make him deserve this intense criticism? Perhaps it is your own myopic view that needs a second look. Wouldn’t the world be a very dull place if everyone thought the same about everything?

This is the man who sits at the top of the college football world. He is the reason that people no longer ask….”Clemson? Is that in North Carolina?” He is partly responsible for 35,000 high school seniors applying for a freshman class of 3000. The university just completed a $1 billion fundraising campaign and a lot of the success was because of Coach Swinney. Forbes even published an article a couple of years ago on the economic benefit Coach Swinney has brought to upstate South Carolina. And, of course, Coach Swinney makes no secret of his deep religious beliefs though I have never heard him criticize anyone whose beliefs may not align with his.

Clemson is no longer just a “redneck school” in South Carolina. It is a premier university and positioned to compete with some of the best universities in the country from both an athletic and academic perspective. Again, that is partly because of Coach Swinney. There are some on this board who do not like that and would prefer Clemson remain a little farm school. On the other hand, if one of the media outlets does not include Clemson in their analyses some of those same people get terribly upset. It is impossible to have it both ways.

As we start this unique year, Clemson is right back where we belong – at the top. Coach Swinney is delivering on his end of the bargain……the question is, are you?

Two last things: Some will go off on BLM being a Marxist organization. It is highly unlikely that BLM, or any organization for that matter, is going to turn our entire civilization upside down. And some of you will come at me since I live in California. I do, but I am from South Carolina, about 35 miles from Clemson. So please save those comments as well.

BLM. Three I know of are Uplift, Voices United and Stand as One, and all are non-violent. In addition, I am a Veteran for Peace supporting BLM groups to have peaceful protests. Our National Org. is very supportive of Black Lives, and there is over 25,000 members. I am not anti-war as there have been very necessary wars in history. However, I am pro-peace, and the police honors us as peacekeepers. "If there is a third WW, the fourth will be fought with sticks and stones." Albert Einstein.

It’s hard to believe someone that has the information you does is so ignorant. BLM may be supported by those organizations, but BLM is in fact a Marxist anti-American authoritarian organization. It’s painfully obvious to anyone that has ever read their mission statement, which includes defunding the police, the people protecting most Black people in America, and destruction of the nuclear family. It’s not racism holding black communities back today. It’s the fact that nearly 75% of black children are being raised by single mothers! Liberal policies in the 60s destroyed Black families which is led to the destruction of the black community. You can go on YouTube and see an interview with one of the three black women that founded BLM. She talks about the fact that her and one of the other cofounders are in fact trained Marxist! If you think BLM is not a Marxist authoritarian anti-American anti-family organization you are a moron! Go read their mission statement. One of the people on their board is the woman that was in the weather underground that Clinton pardoned and got out of jail because of her domestic terrorism as part of the weather underground in the 70s. BLM is in fact a domestic terror organization! Clearly you have not been watching videos on YouTube by independent journalist. Even a lot of people on the left and Democrats are calling out BLM and this crazy propaganda!

Most non-Trumpers knew he was lying.

Those people have gone too far and overreacted. But, Dabo is playing with fire and treading a very fine line at the moment! He even said after one of these recent events where a black man resisted arrest and got shot when it was his girlfriend that called the police because she was scared for her life and Dabo said he hoped that people would be held accountable. Really? The police showing up to protect a black woman that called for their help for a boyfriend who is a known criminal with an arrest warrant out and he resisted arrest and was reaching for a weapon when he was shot by police and Dabo thinks people need to be held accountable? He got what he deserved. The cops did their job! I wasn’t completely happy and comfortable with the stickers on our helmets but Dabo did a pretty good job of making them small and the focus being on love and unity and very little in terms of political organizations! But make no mistake, the fans and IPTAY and alumni are the ones that have the real power. And If Dabo gets out too far over his skis on this he will find that out! Don’t think for a moment that the overwhelming majority of people in South Carolina and Clemson alumni and IPTAY members support BLM nor antifa nor any other form of authoritarian or far left politics.

Sep 16, 2020, 2:44 AM

Shhhhh.

The Clinton News Network and NYT cabal didn't want you to know about those "peaceful protesters" from BLM that acted as human roadblocks to prevent the ambulances from reaching the ER.

BLM protests are "mostly peaceful" like hurricanes are "mostly wind". Of course they are. Until they aren't.

California Tiger, I know you are trying to keep some of us from going off the deep end. I can appreciate that.

But no one on Tnet has threatened to burn down, destroy, loot or harm anyone if their demands are not met. No one is bullying other Tnetters to resist the raised fist. No one is trying to coerce other fans into no longer supporting the team. They have expressed what they felt they are compelled to stop paying for; i.e., they are following the dictates of their own conscience, which is the freedom of religion that is the first freedom in the Bill of Rights.

California as a state has forgotten that the freedom of religion--the freedom of conscience or thought--is the root freedom that makes the other First Amendment freedoms meaningful.

The freedoms to protest peaceably, to petition the government, to assemble and the freedom of the press--the freedoms of expression--only have value if we have a free conscience.

We can discuss, persuade, cajole and argue about it, but eventually each of us has the right to make up our own minds.

"California as a state has forgotten that the freedom of religion--the freedom of conscience or thought--is the root freedom that makes the other First Amendment freedoms meaningful."

You do realize when you make a statement like this that you are talking about 40 milion people. 1 in 8 Americans. Don't you think it a bit ridiculous to label 40 million people with a statement about religion.....? I doubt if you could create a statement about religion that would apply to everyone in your own home. And quite honestly I do not remember the First Amendment prioritizing the freedoms included.

I did a little research once - on this big wide planet there are 9 major religions (Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.) . I'm sure there are more than 9 but 9 include the majority of the worshiping public around the world. I'm most familiar with the Christian sector. Remember that every time there's a new level there is some kind of division that's been created or thus there wouldn't be any need for different belief systems. Within the Christian division, there are 3 major sub-divisions.....Protestant, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox. I'm most familiar with the Protestant sub-division so I dove a little deeper. There are hundreds of denominations that fit under the Protestant umbrella but for now just focus on the most familiar ones - Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, etc. There are all kinds of Baptist churches that are organized in many ways. Lutherans are organized by Synod. And you can go on and on. Remember they exist in all these forms because somewhere along the line there has been some kind of division. And even then churches split over various issues. And I would be willing to bet when you get to the most basic level - that 2 people sitting next to each other in church would not align on every single topic. And you know what's really interesting....every single one of these religions starts with some variation of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" Every single one. And our (and I mean humankind) inability to agree on that one simple statement created this complexity that has consumed humanity forever.

So to make a sweeping statement about religion and 40 million people really has no meaning.

Re: broadbrushing Californians

Sep 16, 2020, 10:54 AM [ in reply to Re: SMH in Disbelief ]

You're a good dude, and ordinarily your "treat me like an individual!" well-modulated rant would be reasonable.

But not now.

40,000,000 Californians. According to Harris, about 12,000,000 claim to attend any worship service regularly. Except during Corona.

Last weekend fewer than 400,000 Californians participated in corporate worship of any type with other congregants. The actual number was probably much lower than that. That's 99% of you were content to stay home because your state told you to.

Meanwhile, protesters are allowed by "law" to outnumber church attendees by 10x because protesting is essential for public health and is done outside. No churches have been granted waivers to their attendance caps if they hold outdoor services.

When I say "Californians have forgotten the importance of religious freedom", your first response is to deny that religious freedom is primary. You illustrated my point.

Then your second response is to pretend that not all Californians have forgotten it. But you have. You may not be the governor, legislature, health department or county administrator who is making the decision, but if you accept their decision to ban or severely limit corporate worship, you have agreed.

In short, when all religions stress the importance of public worship, but well less than 1% of Californians do it, I'm thinking I might need to broaden my brush even more.

BLM in my opinion has been lumped in with a bunch of "other stuff" it does not actually stand for. I don't think it's a political group.

I think people want to feel like if someone does not give them a right to a trial by a jury of their peers - there will be justice done for someone not being given that basic right.
This is exactly how things fester on though. People too scared to speak up because you might not be popular or liked.
Unfortunately, some people don't see this as "a scared people issue"! Scared for their own lives and scared for the lives of their children. 8:46 on someone's neck should get as much criticism and anger as what Coach Swinney and other organizations is getting.
Nowhere in there was a - dislike this group or those people don't have a important job and deserve our respect and admiration. It's not there. I wouldn't have someone say it around me w/o me challenging and checking them on it.
But, as a person who served 92 -00 on active duty military - nobody can tell me why a person in a war zone has to show constraint before engaging an enemy combatant or risk violating "rules of engagement" and being charged as a war criminal.
But over and over it can be people who may or may not have broken a law are routinely killed when they have "no weapon" on them. No way of making it so someone won't go home to their family; yet they get shot multiple times.
To me - that is what the BLM sticker is about. I am a veteran who has been shot at in the name of the greatest country on Earth. I know what makes this country so great is the people in it. All the people in it..

Long Story Short I pretty much second your post OP.

George Floyd died from an overdose of Fentanyl. Not from a 160-lb cop putting pressure on the non-tracheal side of his neck for 8:46.

I know this is difficult to grasp when the only people with the courage to say it are virtually anonymous posters on the internet, because your national media only tells one side of the story.

So who cares about the ME's findings or the toxicology report or the first-hand witness accounts or the 26 minutes of bodycam footage.

But BLM thinks that legalizing drugs will improve Black quality of life in America.

They must be high already.

I agreed with you, for the most part, until the last paragraph.

I myself bristled when Coach took place in a BLM protest, not because I don't support black lives, but because I do support black lives.

Only recently did I realize he was making space for his players to believe what they will, even if that belief has poor ramifications. I'm still trying to make sense of how to navigate that if I were in his shoes, so I'm trying to camp out in that space instead of lash out.

However, you are ignorant about BLM, the movement/organization.

I probably speak for most here that Black lives do unequivocally matter because they are people. There is a massive difference in supporting what I just wrote from supporting the movement/org.

From their "About Us":

We are unapologetically Black in our positioning. In affirming that Black Lives Matter, we need not qualify our position.

-> Fine, you are proud of your skin color. I could never say that about my white skin, but I'll also concede that the culture at large leading up to the civil rights movement could have made people ashamed to be black. A bit further down:

We are guided by the fact that all Black lives matter, regardless of actual or perceived sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, immigration status, or location.

-> Again, black lives matter because lives matter. BLM has begun to position themselves in a way with "perceived sexual/gender identity" that I fundamentally disagree with, but I can tolerate this. Further:

We are self-reflexive and do the work required to dismantle cisgender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.

-> Ummm? Really starting to delve into hegemonic divisions to set up a struggle between classes. This is Marxist in origin, a clear example of the use of Critical Race Theory and Intersectionality. That is a statement of fact, not opinion. Further:

We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.

-> marxism.

We foster a queer?affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking, or rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual (unless s/he or they disclose otherwise).

-> postmodern marxism.

-> They use the word "comrades". Now, I know by itself, that is a weak argument. BUT, in addition to everything in their mission statement, they could have used any other word in the dictionary for neighbor, and they chose comrade. comrade.

Does Dabo have a responsibility to steer young men under his care away from an organization that wants abortion to be fully funded and available (the real number one killer of black lives) and one that seeks to undermine every establishment of western thinking (including science and logic)? I suppose it's for him to decide and us to argue about. Make no mistake, though. BLM knows who it is, and what it wants to do.

Go Tigers.

This notion that the football program being good

Sep 16, 2020, 4:00 PM

improves our academic reputation is wrong.

The reality is that Dabo has had very little to do with Clemson's academic standing. Applications to Clemson have been on the rise for the last 20 years, mostly due to the increased availability of student loans. Of course our football program has been one way that the university is marketed, and that's great! But you're kidding yourself if you believe that having a good football program is significantly altering the quality of candidates applying to Clemson.

Clemson was Time Magazine's Public College of the Year before Dabo was even an assistant here. Moreover, U.S. News and World Report has considered Clemson a top public university in the "more selective" category longer than Dabo has been our coach. In case you didn't know, our academic standing isn't based on how good we are at football.

Football is undoubtedly an important component to the student experience at Clemson, but it's a mistake to assume that most students who come to Clemson are making that decision based on the football team. It's also incorrect to assume that Clemson would merely be a "redneck school" or a "farm school" if not for Dabo and the football program.

I completely agree with the OP. Some of the responses are downright embarrassing. I can only hope that most of them are from members who are not alums. I am a native of SC and have lived in Clemson most of my life. If you compare SC to California in any meaningful "quality of life" issue, California wins and its not even close. Look at stats like per capita income, ranking of public schools, quality of healthcare, life expectancy. The only SC institution that is outstanding is Clemson University. The reason for our state's dismal track record IMHO is rampant racism and one party politics.
Calling BLM "marxist" by people means nothing to me because I remember when people said the NAACP was a communist front. What matters to me is that organizations like BLM are trying to end systemic racism especially in the justice system. And yes, I am an alumnus, white, and a Christian.
