Sirius question regarding scheduling

With future games against the mighty likes of Uconn, Louisiana Tech, Charlotte, App State, and so forth, why don't we just fork up the money to buy a few of those games out so we can have a better schedule? Or why don't we just look for a little better competition from the start? It just seems odd to me that teams have to wait around 10 years for a home and home series because most teams fill their schedules up with 1 or 2 cupcakes (or strength of schedule killers) years in advance.

Most teams have 3-4 cupcakes. . The sec usually had about 7.

The cupcake games

Serve an important purpose. Especially with 2 OOC games locked up every year with us playing an FCS team, and whichever smaller school from SC we get that year like Furman, there’s only so much maneuverability when it comes to scheduling.
Having those “cupcake” games give the coaches opportunities to keep the 1’s sharp but also let a lot of the reserves get some meaningful snaps so when you might have to call on them later in the year, they’ve already cut their teeth some and the moment isn’t too bright.
It’s not the most exciting from a fan’s perspective but it’s necessary and if every OOC had me tailgating at the Coot game level or what A&M will be like this year, I wouldn’t be long for this Earth.

The most important thing about those games

Is those unentertaining schools get the bulk of their athletic budgets from the #### wooing they take. That is more kids getting to go to college and more kids playing sports through college.
It also gives that kid who wasn't good enough to play for clemson a chance to at least play at clemson.
The only downside is the fan who is bored .

True dat. The body only has so many days of merrymaking in it. It’s nice to have a few games to just take in everything around the stadium and town without too much hype.

Two things
Aug 7, 2018, 7:41 AM
|
|
1) Our SOS is not an obstacle to gaining a berth in the CFP. Notre Dame desperately needs an extra strong SOS since they don't play for a conference championship. With our schedule, all we have to do is win and we're in.
2) When the SEC quits padding their scheds with cupcakes the rest of the Power5 may have to follow suit. Until then, it would be foolish to blaze that trail. If Clemson loses to a top 5 team, that loss counts twice. If Bama beats La Tech, that win counts twice. No sense volunteering to allow the SECheat bias to do you in.

Because it’s the only way Clemson can have 7 home games

Every year, 4 conference road games every year and 1 non conference road game every year. So Clemson has to find 2 teams every that will not require a return game at their place.

What benefit is there to having an OOC schedule comprised

of, say, South Carolina + Notre Dame + LSU + UGA? Would you really want to play that schedule?
1) The odds of losing 2-3 (or even more) games and being eliminated from playoff contention is astronomically higher with that schedule than a typical Clemson schedule that includes 1 marquee OOC game + SCAR + 1 in state FCS school + 1 G5 school.
2) All of those schools would demand home and homes or a 1-off neutral site game. That means 6 home games per year (2 OOC, + 4 ACC) instead of 7. Home games generate more revenue, even when they are against Georgia Southern.
3) There are going to be far fewer opportunities to get any kinks worked out, or to get the younger players some valuable experience. It's also much more likely that we suffer more injuries playing that many top level teams.
4) It's impossible to do what you want anyway because the only way that many quality opponents would be available to schedule is if they all did it. Look how much work goes into just setting up one series with LSU or UGA. It's not easy to get those marquee home and home scheduled.

type schedule will only happen if everyone else follows suit or if it is required. Look at SOS and you will see having the 2 "cupcakes" does not hurt it as much as you would think? Why? because everyone else with a tough conference schedule has the 2-3 "cupcakes" as well. We generally have 2 strong OOC games each year with SCAR and another Power 5 team. Last 2 years it was Auburn, this year and next TA&M. As mentioned above, why would you schedule another tough game that could put additional wear and tear on the players if it is not necessary. Keep in mind.... in 2017 we lost to Syracuse..... That same schedule style, with the 2 cupcakes and one loss was still good enough for which ranking by the CFP??? The #1. I am not sure how much more you could ask for.....

I noticed...

your aren't complaining about the games that were scheduled against teams like Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Notre Dame, and Texas A & M.
You do realize the Athletic Department is currently working to schedule a home and away with both Georgia and LSU?
At the end of the day, Clemson's strength of schedule (which ranks in the top 20, if not higher, annually) isn't keeping the team out of the CFP.

.... The point of my post wasn't to bash the future bigger opponents. It was to attempt to figure out why we have these random games such as Uconn or Kent State (not even FCS schools) planned so far in advance and they seem to be somewhat in the way of bigger and better opponents.
