I would hate to lose Bates. He's one of THE best recruiters in the nation. A part of me also doesn't think he would be anywhere near BVs level as coordinator. Position coaching is not the same as team strategy and play calling. So promoting him just to keep him I'm not sure about...

It would stand to reason that they've been perparing him for some time, and hopefully assessing his ability to do the job along the way. Dabo might not be an Xs and Os coach, but his strength sure has been managing his choice of personnel who do.

Yes. He learned on the job in 2008. Many conference and national championships ago. We also had nothing to lose at that point as a program as we consistently underperformed and even had a term to describe our performance. You don’t go with a couch learning on the job if you’re a NC contender.

Dabo learned on the job but was smart enough to hire the best coordinators in the country with a blank check. Dabo isn't a offensive or defensive specialist he NEEDS the best coordinators and just promoting within to teach them is going to be a huge mistake.

I’m ok with Bates. For replacement after that we need the very best recruiter we can find who would fit with our culture. With Kirby at UGA, Mack in NC and Napier at UF, recruiting is going to be tougher going forward in areas we have excelled previously. Wonder if Dre Bly would consider leaving UNC? Doubt it, but that’s the direction I’d be going. Same if Elliott goes or Caldwell retires. Hire the best recruiters who will follow the rules.

This reminds me when folks on Tnet wanted Ralph Freigen as our OC instead of Morris since he was a proven OC. Whoever Dabo picks I’m good with because he’s proven he makes good hires and he has a lot more at stake for continued success of this program than we do.

How do we know that? BV, Bates, Reed, and really Conn were external hires. Dabo will hire the best person for the job. Dabo proved that when he fired good friend Billy Napier to hire Chad Morris.

You may be correct but I can't help but think back to his recruitment of Morris for OC and Venables for DC. They were game changers for Clemson. Hoping he can do it again...

I have no issue promoting within if someone picked up the system under BV. If at all possible it means keeping the same scheme in place then go for it.

Well said. Too much group think and inbreeding can lead to a lack of new ideas and innovation. When Rich Rod starting scoring 40 per game at Clemson with players that previously could only muster 10 points it was like whoa, this is fantastic. When Chad Morris said his high school team had more foot speed than Clemson's offense that was a breath of fresh air that eventually paved the way to a vertical passing attack. We need a DC that want's to do it his way and is not a yes man. Dabo is the boss but it's healthy to to get different perspectives and inputs. Confident that with an unlimited budget Dabo can lure the next BV.

Not really questioned many of his decisions. Not sure why people bring up Dabo’s ego. I’m not seeing any issues. He is the head coach shouldn't he be able to hire who he wants without being called egotistical. I must be missing something.

Not to do anything hastily. Whether you hire within or look for the type of person you want . . take a deep breath and consider all possibilities. I personally want someone with a lot of vigor, like BV. It has become a good mantra for us. I like the energy and want the same.
