Is dabo slipping ..

Nov 28, 2021, 4:44 PM

Many teams are paying many, many million$ to hire a coach. Many have paid in the $10 million range (SC, LSU, Florida) just to fire the old coach. All the LSU coach did was win the Natty last season and fall off this year.

As a head coach Dabo now is 149-36 with most of the losses coming early on.
He was a walk on at Alabama who caught 7 passes in his career as a player. Swinney was twice named Academic All-SEC and SEC Scholar Athlete Honor Roll, he is a smart guy who works hard.

He was never a head coach or even a coordinator before taking the job mid season as a "place holder" until a real coach could be hired at Clemson. He beat the #####! Fans liked him, so the administration gave him the job as he would work for free food and we had no $$$.

He had a tough start, going 6-7 in his 3rd season. By then us fans were behind him. He wore his love for JESUS on his sleeve and was eager to say so. He ran a clean program we were proud of.

He got boosters to join in with some $$ to improve facilities. He got kids with talent to consider us.

For the last ten years he has won 10 games or more. Many teams never see even one 10 win season. He is on track to do it again this season.
Along the way he has won many Championships and a couple Nattys. He is 'Hall of Fame' caliber and not yet done.

Coach Dabo is an incredible person who represents Clemson University in a way that makes all students and all fans proud. He does that on the field and just as importantly --> off the field.
Haters hate success, and so many hate Dabo. GO TIGERS !

Short answer no Dabo is not slipping. I really appreciate DJU but his play was well below what Clemson QB play has been accustomed to and I truly believe if we had average QB play we would most definitely be playing in Charlotte and still In the CFP picture. Sorry if I have hurt anyone’s feelings and I am not bashing our QB just stating my opinion.

You make good points. Consider another angle.

No matter what one thinks of the QB situation (or any other areas) this is what the team had to work with in 2021. No one could predict so many players out or playing hurt.

They did what they could, no one was slacking off. All players gave 100%.

Preseason most experts had us top 4 as the pieces were in place,
Things happened. That is the way of the world.

Is our Strength and Conditioning taking a step back? All those players are hurt and unavailable.

I get what is being said here and agree 100% Dabo has done nothing but win and has earned our patience to work through what is called "a tough year"! They would be offering an extension at S. Carolina if the HC had the team in a position to have double-digit wins! We are fortunate and hopefully, people realize championships - even in the ACC are to be valued and appreciated! They aren't easy to come by no matter what you think of the competition.

Nov 28, 2021, 8:29 PM

Actually, I think many of the injuries could be attributed (at least partially) to S&C, since the large majority were non-contact. I'd love to see Ben Boulware brought back to apprentice under Joe Batson, with the intent of him replacing Joey when he retires.

Injuries are always a large part of football, but Heaven knows we've seen more than our share this season.

Dabo isn't slipping he is still learning. He's still young compared to most coaches. He isn't a game day wizard that other coaches come here to learn from him. He NEEDS the best assistants to win and he has been lucky to get them. He is learning from them. I think right now he might be TOO reliant on trusting his assistants because he doesn't really have the experience to take over. He is obviously still learning while getting results. He's ranked 3rd or 4th all time in games won in the first 15 years of being a head coach. He's fine as long as his passion to coach is still there.

Since Dabo became head coach, Clemson is #2 in wins

Nov 28, 2021, 5:37 PM [ in reply to Re: Is dabo slipping .. ]

in the entire country.

Who are these "gameday wizards" you're referring to, and what sets them apart from Dabo?

There is one coach and one coach only who can realistically be placed ahead of Dabo right now, and Dabo keeping this team together after a 4-3 start is more evidence to that fact.

Dabo is nothing without his assistants. Thank the athletic department for writing blank checks and paying 2 million for coordinators. They dont do that because Dabo has the experience to replace him. He's a salesman/recruiter/hype man. To think he can do anything else is delusional. There is a reason his name isn't coming up anywhere even for an interview. His style works here and probably not anywhere else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bullcrap. Dabo is the leadership and glue that holds it all

Nov 28, 2021, 5:54 PM

together. He is the Head Coach, the manager, the CEO, and without his leadership from X's and O's to mental makeup and gameday preparation, this team would have never reached the heights we have.

There's not a program in the country who wouldn't want Dabo right now, and the reason you don't hear his and Saban's name come up anywhere is because everyone knows they aren't going anywhere.

Name two other coaches in the game who are better than Dabo right now.

Me thinks you're full of crap.

Re: Since Dabo became head coach, Clemson is #2 in wins

Nov 28, 2021, 8:11 PM [ in reply to Re: Since Dabo became head coach, Clemson is #2 in wins ]

The Athletic department writes those checks to his assistants because Dabo gave them his entire first raise. He recognizes their value and doesn’t want to retrain new ones needlessly.

“Salesman/recruiter/hype man” “delusional”—OK, you just outed yourself.

Dabo was a very disciplined, hard-working walk-on WR but without Hunter Renfrow’s talent. Like many Clemson fans, I disliked Dabo as an interim coach, because I thought he was a hype man (an overreaction to Tommy Bowden’s lack of it). His team would start the games fired up but wear down as the game went on.

However, once Dabo got the permanent job, Dabo applied his MBA experience to his program and now runs it with the discipline, organization, accountability and communication of a Fortune 500 company. Once he and his system matured, his only potential weakness is if he gets stale. He has developed a system where EVERYTHING the players do in official practices is graded by the coaching staff, and the coaching staff is also graded.

You’re right that he doesn’t want to recreate his system somewhere else. Why should he?

When players drop on the depth chart, there is a grading sheet that shows why. His HR skills would make most corporations envious. You call that “sales” and “hype”, but I’ve never met a salesperson who was disciplined and honest if they thought they could get by with BS, and salespeople hate the discipline of HR work.

If you think a HC should be interfering with his coordinators’ communication of Xs and Os, you underestimate the responsibility of those coordinators. We’re not talking about bar tending here. When a HC interferes with an underling’s job, who is going to do the HC’s job? The Athletic Director? That’s the inevitable result.

Maybe you should have asked Coach Mus when he left if he had any regrets about his coaching style. I bet you could have learned from him.

You are a joke. Some fan of another school jealous of what Coach Swinney has built. Using ancient phrases to try and diminish what he has done and is doing exposes you. Have fun with your longing to have a program like ours

The 4-3 start is 100% on DJ being absolutely terrible. We had the 3rd ranked scoring defense in the entire country with a bottom 5 QB in the country. That is how you barely win half your games with a top 3 scoring defense. DJ ended the season as the second worst rated QB in the nation with at least 250 attempts.

The only coach better than Dabo is Saban.

Nov 28, 2021, 7:34 PM

Saban also has a 20 year age advantage.

But does he develops young men in life? What about his graduation rate. What kind of citizens does his players make. Coaching should never be judged only on wins and losses. The 70 year old Saban isn’t close to our Dabo if you look at the big picture. You think their recruiting is always on the up? Think about what you said.

No, Dabo isn’t slipping. His message is family focused and a high performer in all aspects of life, will be a winner at the end. That message hasn’t changed, the evaluation criteria are evolving with NIL and the portal, but he will get it figured out because he focuses on the important things when most others are focused on the superficial.
