should women be required to register for selective service?

Jun 14, 2021, 2:12 AM

My response is yes. You want the same opportunities, take on the same responsibilities.

Not in a sane country....but we lost our sanity some time ago.

Heck no

I personally don’t think women should be combat soldiers either. And it has nothing to do with them being biologically inferior to men. It has to do with mans natural instinct to protect women. If im in a foxhole in the sheet with a woman I would be instinctively inclined to protect the women and that could indanger other soldiers, the company, or the mission.

I never served. Have never been in combat. And have absolutely ZERO perspective for what it would actually be like. But my wife did and we are in agreement on this topic. After she served she felt the military was no place for a women based on the natural distraction of men.

Do they get a deferment if they already have 3 kids at age 18? Just asking' before I answer.

I would have to say NO!!! Not every woman feels like they are equal to men from a physical standpoint. Men are the ones who should fight for their wives and children and those who cannot fight for themselves. I am 59 and will never change my views on this subject.

have different physical testing pass/fail standards for men and women.

The Army tried "gender neutral" physical testing for awhile, but have reverted to separate standards, as most of the women were washing out. Article from March 22, 2021 excerpted below.

"The Army, in its latest Combat Fitness Test, is reinstituting separate measures for men’s and women’s performance, admitting a single standard cannot be achieved.

Changes to the physical fitness test began a decade ago when soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan were failing at basic battlefield tasks. The Army, at first, sought a gender-neutral test but saw increasing rates of failure among female soldiers. In the newest version, dubbed ACFT 3.0, a tiered system will be tested that awards soldiers in five performance categories on a curve against their same-gender peers.

"It accounts for the recognized physiological differences between men and women and removes the direct competition between men and women in the service," Maj. Gen. Lonnie Hibbard, commanding general of the U.S. Army Center for Initial Military Training, told reporters Monday.

Green, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum categories would be based on how well the soldier performs in his or her gender groups. For example, a platinum category might represent the top 1% of scores and the green, the lowest 50%."

I don't think women should serve in combat. Like it or not, women are not as physically strong as men. Granted there are a few exceptions, but not enough to make it practical. Currently women do not have to complete the same PT requirements as men.

However, they should be required to register with selective service. There are many other non-combat MOS / Jobs Rating they can hold.

They brought back the selective service registration when I was a freshman at Clemson in 1980.

* Yes

And if anyone thinks some women can't do whatever keep in mind that registering is just paperwork, as for other things, go find a Westpoint alum from '81 and ask her.

Is this pertinent to Clemson?***
