Should teams who opt out of bowls share in the bowl revenue?

Dec 14, 2020, 5:25 PM

I get the ACC has always split bowl revenue evenly amongst the league. However, this year we have teams who are likely to get an invitation opting out of not only the bowls but also the revenue that goes with them.

In an already lean fiscal year shouldn’t there be some consequences for just leaving money on the table?

No. You don't show up to work, don't show up on payday.

Opting out needs to be an All In or All Out proposition. You can't just opt out of playing because "these kids want to spend Christmas break with their mommas" and then opt back in when it's time for revenue distribution from bowl games. That's horse$hit and everybody knows it.

I would hope that this problem was addressed at the beginning of the season by the conference. And my guess is that teams can opt out and still get their slice of the pie.

Terrible lesson to teach kids. Conversely, it could be said that my position is "Play for the Money no matter what!" and that's probably a bad lesson to teach kids too. LOL.

I think that’s a reasonable position, although this

year, with the added costs of traveling and housing during COVID, it might be fare to say that those teams weren’t going to contribute if they had gone to a bowl.

My opinion is, if a team is invited and opts out they should not receive any revenue from the conference. Split it between those who are invited and play

Do participating programs in small bowls actually make money?

I’ve always been under the impression that it cost a program money to play in a small bowl.

I doubt there will be a whole lot to share without fans in

attendance. The networks would probably invoke (and perhaps rightly so) some "Act of God" clause to allow them to keep their money, to offset production losses.

Now, I don't know if such a clause exists, but you can bet your bippy there would be a lawyers convention type court battle if it does!

I am pretty sure the SEC rule ...

... is in writing, that you have to accept a bid to a bowl or forfeit the bowl revenues shared by the other schools. I heard this from a well placed source.
