Nov 7, 2012, 3:31 PM [ in reply to Mossburg 500 ]

Mossberg pump. Great quality for much less than a Remington, etc. If you were looking for something to hunt with, I'd probably suggest something else but the Mossberg 500 series is the smart choice here. Smart choice going shotgun over handgun for home defense. I could lecture on that all day.

Once you get the shotgun, don't stick it in a closet and then hope it's going to do you some good when you need it. You won't even be able to find the safety under pressure, so get some shells and go out in the field and learn to use it.

Last bit of advice...have a plan ahead of time. Know how you're going get everyone to safety and draw your line. You're trying to defend lives at a choke point, not clear the house. Let the insurance company take care of what you pay them for and don't go looking for a gunfight. You're not trained for that.

I'm of the opinion you learn the weapon with a standard stock, and when you've become comfortable with that, you can add an adjustable stock with pistol grip later (another reason to go with Mossberg 500 series). Pistol grip alone is for the movies or people looking for a home castration kit.

Big fan of Benelli for wingshooting.

Nov 7, 2012, 3:51 PM

Supernova is already slated as my next shotgun purchase, as a matter of fact. Fantastic shotguns, but like the Remingtons, no need for someone to spend that kind of money on a pure home defense shotgun in my opinion when you can get the quality you need for less in a Mossy. If someone hunts, then they most likely already know what they need to about shotguns and aren't looking for something in the PURE home defense vein anyway.

fair enough I guess 1/2 the price is huge if its only sitting there....I use my Franchi and Benelli for hunting purposes only. Have handguns and an alarm system for home defense.

Nov 7, 2012, 3:55 PM [ in reply to hmmm. Same price. ]

I don't think you can wrong either way, I've just always had Mossbergs in one configuration or another. I think the Express line is something Remington introduced a while back to get some weapons out that at a lower price point. Having never handled one, I'd guess it's about the same quality as the Mossy. Maybe some others have handled both and could give you a better comparison.

No problems whatsoever. It's semi retired now, so no more paddling boats, using as a push pole, getting sprayed with salt water, etc.

You can't go wrong with Mossy or Rem. The after market is huge for both if you're into mods like different stocks, mag extenders, lights, blah blah blah.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right tool for the right job.

Nov 7, 2012, 5:10 PM [ in reply to If there was a remote chance that it could ]

If you did shoot clays, you don't really want to do it with a Persuader and an 18.5 inch barrel. If you're going to do that and possibly hunt, I'd really look for the old Mossy combo that was really popular a few year back that had the 26 inch turkey barrel (which would be good for home defense, even thought it's a little long) and the 28 inch barrel for sporting clays and wingshooting. Walmart used to carry that combo, but I've actually seen it pop up used quite frequently. Make sure you're not getting the rifled slug barrel in that combo unless you're going to hunt deer.

Nov 7, 2012, 4:21 PM

The 935 (semi-auto) freezes up in cold weather, but I love how it shoulders and the long waterfowl barrel is great for skeet, dove, and waterfowl. The short turkey barrel is nice for versatile uses such as turkey hunting, home defense, and the very rare deer hunt with a shotgun.

The 870 express (pump) has shell ejection issues on rare occasion, but is an overall great gun too. Pumps don't freeze in cold weather, but unless you're Lakebum, it's probably not cold enough in your house to worry about a semi-auto freezing. Just keep the freeze issue in mind if you intend to hunt ducks. Pump is probably the way to go if that's your MO.
