2021 Starting RB without a doubt will be Dixon.

Jul 21, 2021, 1:20 PM

4th year in the program. Knows the offense up and down. Never had any issues. Has been All In the whole time. 3 years of world class weight room and nutrition training. Knows the blocking scheme and can execute. Good hands out the back field. He’s got great burst, excellent vision, very shifty, not afraid to pound it up the middle. AND excellent ball security. Obviously we all want LJD to be great...

but his lack of burst concerns me. Haven't seen it the last 2 years.

LJD is a very functional, fundamental RB that knows how to read blocks and make some guys miss. He can catch the ball on occasion. However, he lacks both power and explosiveness. Elite RBs need at least one of these.

If nobody else steps up, LJD will start the entire year. Unless the passing game collapses, his yards per carry should be good because defenses won't see any need to key on him like they did with ETN.

To clarify, I'm not going out of my way to knock LJD, just telling it like I see it. I appreciate him staying 4 years and giving everything he has.

You didn’t watch the video did you. One reason you haven’t seen it in two years is he’s split carries with 15 other RBs. And ETN was rarely pulled until the 4th in most every game. We haven’t seen enough of any of the RBs to make any conclusions at this point. But we do know Dixon has more experience and has been in a world class college athletic program for +3 years. He has talent. He has explosiveness and power. We will soon see it come September.

I didn't watch the video because I didn't need to. Like many here, I've seen every carry LJD has ever taken for Clemson. What kind of people do you think populate this forum?

His first year he had a little burst. Something has happened since then.

When ETN was a freshman, he split carries but that didn't stop him from flashing his 0-60 acceleration whenever there was an opening.

As you say, LJD has experience and all the other RBs are unproven. What happens on the field this year will tell the tale.

I'd love to see this "explosiveness and power". LJD never had much power and never will. His success comes from avoiding contact.

I’ve been around long enough to know the kind of people who populate this forum. You seem to fit the bill.

Oh one more POSITIVE thing to say about Lyn-J Dixon is he has zero fumbles. ZERO.

Jul 21, 2021, 3:01 PM [ in reply to Re: Obviously we all want LJD to be great... ]

"When ETN..."

and that is the issue. LJD gets an unfair shake when paired with ETN. ETN could make any play a race to the endzone at a transcendent level at any time that no-one in the country could match. However, LJD always seemed to have a decent gain. He was used in more short-yardage (which speaks to more power), was always good at getting 4 yards+ with contact. He just did not have that slip-speed past the linebackers. He does not have those 40+ gains to stretch out the stats, but dang, he generates a lot of 8-15yard move-the-chains gains. Even without the "big play" capability, he averaged about 0.8-ish or so yards less per carry but thatis literally falling into the trap that ET%N was gaining 7+ while Lyn-J was "only" getting 6 yards. Again, ETN would blow out the stat with a few scampers (and yes, that made defenses sell out on him) but Lyn-J consistently gets a bit more out of shorter gains. I think the perception issue is that Lyn-J is consistently extremely good but ETN was frequently unreal. Lyn-J also has excellent vision. He is great at reading the gaps. That always proves for a better change at always getting positive carries.

Thanks for posting that. We'll be fine with LJD as our starter. That video showed me that he's better than I thought. He may not have the most power for blowing through tacklers like ETN could do, but he reads his blocks well and when he sees the hole he gets north as quick as anyone I've seen. He's also very elusive and very fast. I like the fact that he can get the corner if he needs to, but he's also willing to run inside as soon as he sees the hole. The video didn't show his blocking ability, but it did show his pass-catching skill.

If the line can open holes, he'll be terrific.

Compared to Etienne, Dixon is a bit of a let down (and who wouldn't be?). Still, he is a competent back and he can complement a host of great receivers. Adding weight will help his running because he definitely seems to try to avoid contact if he can, and he needs to see that he can run over people effectively. I am hopeful that he will be better than last season and am encouraged that there are other running back options if he isn't. It would be great if one of the running backs was another Travis Etienne, but that is not the case this season. Move the ball down the field some other way. Clemson will be fine, either way.

Based off what? His high school highlights where he made 15 and 16 year old kids look stupid? Yeah he looks great. Yeah he’s loaded with talent. Yeah he’s got a bunch of stars. But as history has taught us sometimes that never translates into college production. One recent example that comes to mind is Tavien Feaster. He had all the hype. I myself thought he’d be the next Spiller. HeII they even unretired Spillers jersey(which really pizzed me off). And then when he got here he was nothing more than mediocre in a RB room full of talent. I hope we do hit a homerun with one of these guys. Maybe the next CMac or other crazy awesome every down back that runs through anyone.

The past tells me not to count the chickens or the Tiger might turn into one.

He won’t be the starter this year even after the article.

Of course Dixon will start and take the first carries.
He has earned that.
Any who don't agree have not been paying attention to Coach Dabo over the years.

I don't think he will be the starter all season, but he will get lots of work as he is an excellent RB.

FIRST of all, I watched the video (AGAIN).

My thoughts on Lyn-J:
1. Lyn-J needs to run behind his pads more/better. He has more athletic ability than Wayne Gallman, but Wayne did this far better than Lyn-J at this point in his career.
2. Lyn-J is naturally shifty, but his upright running style has made him appear stiff in the hips. Just my thought, but has his coachability slowed down his development here (and potentially other areas) and limited his production?
3. We will find out quickly this fall if Lyn-J has progressed enough. A key indicator- If he is fielding kicks against UGA without any added "excitement" with the ball then I think he's a shoo-in as the RB starter. If he is adding drama to kicks, or if Shipley is the go-to for returner, then that will be very telling on where Lyn-J is in the coaching staff's mind...

I agree, and I expect a big show outta Dixon and the improved OL.

Aug 6, 2021, 11:24 PM

He hasn’t gotten much “talk” off-season what with the loss of various star players and the advent of new ones, but I am confident he’s gonna make his talent and experience do some WORK against Kirvy Fart.

He won’t be by seasons end. He’ll have a decent year with about 500-600 yards rushing but Pace and Shipley will wake over and Mafah will come on as well. Not going to go into specific reasons I just feel that’s what will happen. But he will get his fair share of carries each game

Dixon has averaged 5 carries a game across his career at Clemson, we will run it about 30. Mafah or Pace will have to step into that feature back role, whether by committee or one guy separates. Shipley will get lots of touches, but I would take Dixon every time up the middle. Shipley and Pace dance around too much, Pace is intriguing though. I like Mafah, he is a YAC guy and could handle 15-20 snaps a game. He is hard to bring down and has the best vision of all the backs on campus, by a long shot. I wish we had two more like him.

Nice paean to him, nevertheless....

Aug 7, 2021, 9:08 AM

he's not powerful or strong enough. I saw him get off the bus and was surprised how small he was.

We need "Bama-like" backs, power speed combo guys to compete for Natties. This points to the other guys in the room. Being a career, loyal guy with all the fundamentals, blocking, shiftiness and such, are great qualities, but the position is going to belong to the talent guys with heart. Let's see if I'm
right. At this point it's all speculation.

Yeah you’re right, you guys haven’t won a Natty in about 40 years. Clemson on the other hand has won two in the last 6 years. And been to 4 out of the last 7 games. All with career loyal guys who are sound in fundamentals blocking and shiftiness.

Agreed 100%.

Aug 7, 2021, 2:18 PM

Esp about "knows the blocking scheme AND can execute."

Look how often less naturally talented players are in while waiting for others to either grow physically or mentally.

Rencher comes to mind..
And yes I understand what he brings in terms of leadership.

That's what makes Dabos choices so interesting. We might sit and wonder why, but he's certainly proven there is ALWAYS a sound logical reason.

Go Tigers

ETN left huge shoes to fill, and Dixon is a good back and we will be fine with him as our starter. With our offense it comes down to who can be relied on to pass block, not just run with the ball.

One thing for sure, he has more yards and TDs than I do.
