Shaq Smith redshirt?

Aug 23, 2016, 7:55 AM

Why wouldn't we just use him as a rush end?

Supposedly he was a great pass rusher in high school.

BV and Dabo know what they're doing so I'm not second guessing them. I'm just curious as to why?

Doesn't appear that we need to burn a year with him by simply using him as a rush end when we've got talent already there. The fact that he's behind JD Davis tells the story. Had he overtaken Davis this would obviously be a different story.

probably cause they're so deep at LB and maybe he's just not "there" yet.. and, why not let him redshirt and get "there" before burning a year of eligibility..

Bc we know he will arrive this year. What will happen is, he'll redshirt, do good his redshirt freshmen year, then ball out his sophomore year and leave for the NFL.

Redshirts aren't permanent. They can play him at any time

Aug 23, 2016, 8:50 AM

this year if they really need to.

True. Just doesn't seem like a 5 year man. If anything, I see him leaving his redshirt junior year, much like Kearse and many others

Jayron never was a redshirt. He was a true junior.

I'm always worried about morale with red shirts that come late... But as long as he understands that it's the best for both him & the team, he will be fine. Like Dabo said, if BJ Goodson didn't redshirt, he might have never been drafted. It's all in His plan. Your time will come Shaq. Trust in the system and keep your chin held high!

The thing that worries me, BJ Goodson wasn't a 5 star when recruited....Shaq was.

Exactly. His plan subconscious or not was probably not to stay here 5 years. Meaning you play him. At least on special teams. Even if he was to play this year, still not gauranteed he stays still senior year. This guy will come around, too talented.

Shaq was also an early enrollee, right? So if he hasn't grasped the installs through spring and summer camp, there's obviously something the coaches see that we as fans do not. Renfrow was a 2-star, ended up playing as a walk-on (amongst stiff competition). 5-stars doesn't guarantee you play time or system comprehension for that matter. The way the coaches have spoken of Tre Lamar, he'll be gone as a true junior. I'm sure future depth is always on the mind of the coaching staff. And scout teams can't be all bozos either.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The guy won't be at Clemson more than 4 years so why RS?

Aug 23, 2016, 9:09 AM [ in reply to Re: Shaq Smith redshirt? ]

To me it doesn't make sense. He can help on special teams or something. I think we are wasting a year with a RS because he'll leave for the NFL before he exhausts all his eligibility.

Motivational tactic by the coaching staff.

Aug 23, 2016, 9:22 AM

Sounds like he needs to work a little harder on picking up the defense. Given that a season is now 13-15 games and talented players won't stay 5 years, redshirts don't really have to be made until week 5 or 6.

Apparently he may not be ready (mentally), plus I don't think he'd be our best option to edge-rush.

I'm giving the coaching staff the benefit of the doubt of roster management here. They have a pretty good track record with this stuff.

I somewhat understand what you're saying

Aug 23, 2016, 9:32 AM

I'm honestly surprised that a 5* will get RS but it happens. I think once it clicks for him he will be one of the best LB we have had come through here.
