Shame on you ESPN

Dec 1, 2018, 11:34 AM

For running a feature that would glorify or remotely paint in a positive light whipping a child with a belt for playing poorly. Irresponsible and dangerous to kids playing sports whose parents try to live vicariously through them that don’t have Tua’s abilities. I am not adverse to corporal punishment but that is disgusting.

ESPN has no shame. They are the CNN network in the world of sports.

Yes, it's obvious that you ARE against corporal punishment - probably believe that "time out" is the only form of so-called discipline that should be allowed.

Don't paint Tua's father as a child abuser - that's BS.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So you’re cool with getting beat for playing a bad football game?

Dec 1, 2018, 12:01 PM

I’m not saying Tua’s dad is a child abuser, but people are going to think that for beating your kid for making a mistake IN A GAME that’s he’s trying his best in.

Shame on ESPN is right. Don’t give Tua’s dad a pass on this one.

I will slap my kids on the hand when they act out along with timeouts. In sports, as long as you give it your all it doesn’t end with a whipping. That sends a horrible message that if you beat your kids they can grow up to play QB at the D1 Level. Dangerous precedent and crap reporting by ESPN.

Re: Shame on you ESPN

Dec 1, 2018, 12:23 PM

Slapping a child on the hand if the hand was involved in doing something wrong. Kids don’t give one crap about time out. I believe a spanking with a belt is appropriate when the child does something that warrants it. I.e. my neices children woke up at 3:00 this morning and were quiet enough not to wake her but had a Christmas ornament fight with all of the ornaments on the tree they could reach, they then turned to her plants and needless to say there was dirt everywhere, of course by this time they woke my niece and her husband. There were spankings all around, including the two neices and nephews she was babysitting for the weekend.

Re: Shame on you ESPN

I am not sure if a belt is ever needed, but if there was one, that sounds like something that would make me consider it. Those kids went nuts. A belt for sports seems nuts though to me. I am one of those people that think a belt is never needed though. I was raised in a house with child abuse and domestic violence with my Mom getting the cr^p beat out of her too. I don't believe in violence of kids or women. It never helped. As a matter of fact I hated my dad until his death. I would be super angry too though if I were in your shoes. That must have been infuriating. Sounds like they had a good time though.....for a bit.

Re: Shame on you ESPN

Dec 1, 2018, 3:19 PM

While my personal approach isn't 100 percent opposed to corporal punishment 100 percent of the time, I completely respect where you are coming from.

If a parent does believe in corporal punishment I think that it's important to use it sparingly and only as an absolute last resort. Also, it should never be done in a fit of anger. I have personally found that timeouts and/or loss of privileges do indeed work well the vast majority of the time, and just the threat of a potential spanking can be very effective. Research has actually shown that children that are spanked most often actually end up being more violent as adults.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that if a parent chooses not to implement any form of corporal punishment that it will automatically lead to a child without discipline. When someone says that they were spanked regularly and they turned out fine that doesn't mean that they turned out fine specifically because of spanking. Plenty of people that weren't spanked turn out fine as well—correlation is not causality.

When someone cites the reduction of spanking in society as a specific reason for some or all of society's problems today that really irks me. Problems are much more nuanced to be attributed to something singular.

Regardless of where you stand though, the concept of corporal punishment when your kid throws an interception or has a bad game is absolutely ludicrous.

Exactly there are times when that is warranted. But not every mistake or something stupid as not meeting a parents expectations in a sport. As a young child there was no way he knew whether his son would be good enough to play college sports

On the contrary, I think it sounded really bad, didn't glorify anything. Have to consider the total interview, as a teacher I was shocked that he switched his natural handedness based on his own self-centeredness, used a belt for sports short comings, and picked his kids college for him based on successes others have had.

NOT anything to aspire to. Wonder how he punishes his wife for burning the toast?

When ESPN gave Bruce Jenner a courage award, they completely lost me. Elevating a mental disorder to celebratory status tells you a lot about their priorities - or lack of them.

Re: Shame on you ESPN

Depends on your definition. When I was growing up a spanking was with the hand, a whipping was with a belt or wood branch.

I don't have a problem with the the whipping/spanking for grades/not doing what you are told, etc. I disagree with it being used as motivation in sports.

Re: Shame on you ESPN

Dec 1, 2018, 2:08 PM

My kid was a shortstop, got a college scholarship and started in college. I never once said or did anything if he made an error. Trust me a shortstop is going to be involved in many tough plays they don't always win. My remarks when he was down about striking out or making an error, is that it was all part of the game.
