Serious question: If Clemson WERE extended an invitation to

Jul 9, 2022, 8:24 AM

join the SEC, and turned it DOWN, how would you feel about that?

Me personally, I would feel like we had just committed informed financial suicide. Like it or not, the SEC IS the flagship conference of college football. To not join if invited would be just plain crazy, from a competition and financial standpoint.

For those who say the competition would be too tough, if you are askeert, SAY you are askeert. I say bring it on.

I do not want to join the sec. I enjoy the rivalries that we have had for the past 70 years or so in the ACC. That being said, you cannot overlook the financial portion. As many people have pointed out, if we don't get the TV money, we'll fall behind in the material aspect of things. We have lost prospects to the idea of playing in the sec vs acc. Whatever happens, I'm a Clemson fan. But you won't hear me chanting sec, either.

One thing I don't get. If you have a conference with 20+ teams, how does that make the overall conference better. You play 12 games, 3-4 being cupcakes or ooc. Under current standards, you play 8 conference games. How is that going to prove who the best is in the conference, when you don't play 10-12 of the other teams. You aren't going to see most teams, except every 10 years. It seems to me, having the current setup, where you play your rivals every 2-3 years, throw in the games across conference, is much better. Are we going to have a playoff in conference, then a playoff cross conference? Bah. Too much BS. Too bad we can't separate football conference from the other sports.

how does that make the overall conference better?

When you have eSECpn constantly pimping the SEC 24/7 saying the conference they’ve bought is the best, unbeatable, and all 5*s must go to the conference or else they are too scared to put on their big boy pants, it gives the impression that the SEC is better, whether it’s true or not.

This is a possible case of "Everything that was old is new

again." The ACC was "birthed" out of the old Southern Conference, which at times contained 23 teams. Quite a few of those teams would also later become members of the new SEC. What was strange back in those old Southern Conference mega days was that there were not that many conference games played each season. Not only that, not all members played the same number of conference games, either.

Take the 1930 season as an example. Southern Conference Champion for 1930 was Alabama, who played 8 conference games, and won them all. Tulane was also undefeated in conference play, but they only played 5 conference games. 5 games in conference was the minimum, but there were various teams that played 5, 6, or 7. Alabama and North Carolina were the only two teams to play 8 games in conference.

Clemson finished 9th of the 23 teams, having played only 5 conference games.

I suspect that one aspect of the advent of these "supersized" conferences will be an almost immediate expansion of the Playoffs, since, as you said, you can wind up theoretically with several undefeated teams within a conference that have not played each other during the season.

The sec wants an expanded playoff so these moves they are making are trying to ensure that

Clemson needs conference stability. We are never going to get it in the ACC--those days are over. This is the second time in 10 years that we've faced this situation. Rejection of an invitation would not make me happy.

I think money still rules the day and Clemson will go to the SEC or BIG but I’m probably in the minority when I say, I wouldn’t be disappointed if Clemson chose student athlete football over the semi pro league.

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

Joining the sec is the only real option now. Hope we don't crawl into that hole too deep.
