Serious question about Brad if you are a supporter...

Nov 5, 2019, 9:32 PM

I'm on fence. I want the Tigers to win and keep having hope that he is going to turn it around with better recruits which they are getting now. How much time do you give him with this class coming in next season? It's not a turnaround great class but two good top 100 players. I know he had bad luck with Bahre and Trap having ACLs. I was just so disapointed that showed improvement from Simms, Newman, and Tyson. I really appreciated the effort from Simms and Newman, but thought all three played poorly tonight. What is the longest you give Brad even if you are a huge supporter of his???

It's a really tough call

Nov 5, 2019, 9:39 PM

If this year turns out really brutal, as in 10-20, with very few conference wins, he has to go.

Yes, losing Baehre and Trapp hurts. I never saw either as an impact player though. Trapp is a role player. Depth. Baehre, as I've said a long time now as people pumped him up, averaged 7 points a game in the Big South.

If we're to have any chance Dawes and Hunter will need to grow up much quicker than I think either is really capable of

Thanks! Good points Yes injuries are part of potential pitfalls. That's why you have 13 scholarships.
So unless he's brings 5 star difference makers you don't look what he has coming in? I probably would agree to that.

Nov 5, 2019, 10:16 PM [ in reply to It's a really tough call ]

I disagree about Trapp. I believe he would be our second leading scorer only behind Simms. He showed great improvement last year imo. We have young freshman talent tho so this team could grow up and surprise some people. We also could continue to lose close games and BB has to go if that is the case.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He averaged 6 points a game and had a 1-1

Nov 5, 2019, 10:19 PM

assist to turnover ratio. That's not an ACC point guard. He's a good athlete. He's a mediocre basketball player, now coming off major knee surgery

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He averaged 6 points a game and had a 1-1

Nov 5, 2019, 11:49 PM

Definitely agree about Trapp. Not an ACC level ball handler. Might work better as a 2 guard if he could develop a consistent shot. Will be surprised if he's in decent enough playing shape to make an impact when he returns.

JUst not good, bad stats and bad play. And after having so much experience that EVERYONE ELSE DID NOT.That should mean something . .then loose at home to one of the, predicted, worst teams.

I can take the loss, but I can't take the other team getting to every loose ball. I'm at a loss to explain our scoring droughts, other than that is something we do consistently.

It’s not a serious question. We have 9 years of solid data showing that Brad is not a effective coach. Full stop. Any further discussion is fantasizing.

Was not impressed with Simms offense down low. Put up a couple of awkward shots and generally showed little touch around the hoop. Seems much like last season. Thought he would show significant improvement.

Well, this was one game.

Nov 5, 2019, 11:48 PM

A game in which we played hard on both ends, played good defense, generally took care of the basketball, but simply didn’t make shots. It stinks to lose a conference game I felt we should’ve won, but off nights happen.

Let’s not forget that we were starting two true freshmen in the backcourt. Both are very good players but they are not seasoned veterans yet.

I’m not really sure why tonight’s game should prompt questions about Brad and his coaching. We didn’t make enough shots tonight, and despite doing a lot of other things well, our lack of shot making did us in.

I recommend that we continue to support this team and get some more games under our belt with this team full of newcomers.

I don't understand 2 things

Nov 5, 2019, 11:53 PM

1) Can't shoot free throws - simply NO excuse. What were you doing all summer?
2) Taking BAD shots. It is one thing to have your shots off a little but there were way too many throw it up and pray shots.

One game does not a season make but it was painful to watch - especially down the stretch.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can I add a 3rd?

Nov 6, 2019, 10:04 AM

3) Letting 1 player from the other team drop 30+ points you accounting for half of his team’s total points

Oh, and he’s a redshirt freshman

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He had a great game.

Nov 6, 2019, 1:34 PM

It's not simply that we decided to let him do it. We tried to stop him. In fact, I thought we played good defense on him. He just made some great shots. Hats off to him.

Re: I don't understand 2 things

Nov 6, 2019, 1:33 PM [ in reply to I don't understand 2 things ]

1. Brad's teams typically shoot free throws well. Under Brad, we are way above our historical average at Clemson, and shoot free throws much better than we did under Purnell, Shyatt, Barnes, Ellis, etc. Let's give it more than one game to declare that we aren't a good free throw shooting team. I predict that we will turn out to be a solid free throw shooting team.

2. I agree that we took some bad shots, but most of our shots were good last night. We simply didn't make them. We made them fairly well over the summer, and in the secret scrimmage, but not as well in the exhibition.

That's a silly statement. How many times must we witness this "one game" before you realize it's the norm? "off night" my butt. This type of game has repeated itself over and over again.

I've never thought Brad was an awful coach

Nov 6, 2019, 8:07 AM [ in reply to This is a completely new team! ]

I've felt he has run his course here and stated so. When exactly will Dawes and Hunter become seasoned veterans? It wont be this year. Which means our backcourt will be severely lacking all year long. That's not good, not at all.

My biggest question from last night was why Tyson played so little. We have a few games here to get Dawes and Hunter some reps, but down the road, Tyson has to start and play well. I think Dawes, Newman, Mack, Tyson and Simms is still our best lineup, especially offensively. Takes us out of starting two true freshmen in the backcourt, which I dont see working out well. Freshmen mostly perform better when they can watch for a few minutes, see how things are developing. Hunter needs that view. We have no choice but to start Dawes. I actually thought Dawes did well. But he pressed as is the norm for a freshman. He needs some vets around him, including beside him in the backcourt. Newman would bring that

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with your lineup.

Nov 6, 2019, 1:59 PM

I thought that would be our starting lineup last night, and was surprised to see Chase Hunter start and play so much. I expected Hunter Tyson to play more, and assume that he did something Brad didn't like to put him in the doghouse. I also thought Curran Scott would play more, and I think he would've if he had not had several bad plays in a row.

I thought all three of our true freshmen played well and will all be very good players for us, but as you said, they will likely have their ups and downs early on. Brad seems content to ride that out for the good of our team, later this year and in the long run.

I think Tyson’s lack of PT was due to....

Nov 6, 2019, 2:49 PM

VT’s smaller and quicker lineup.
We played small for the most part...and Tyson is one of our taller guys.
I assume against a more traditional lineup we’ll see more of him.

3s against a team with no post presence.
In the first half we got to the basket...but in the second half we chucked them up there.
Not every open 3 is a good shot.

Re: Our guards are too

Nov 6, 2019, 8:35 AM

young and inexperienced. They might work out ok in a couple years but now is going to be painful against ACC teams. Losing Trapp and Honor not being able to play really hurts just to have some experience out there.

I was disappointed that we couldn't run some plays to get Mack more shots. Likely caused by our poor guard play. He looks like he could be our best scorer to me.

The guy that missed the 3 FT in a row should have been pulled for the rest of the game. It was clear he was shook up. Our freshman guards are not what Duke and UNC bring in as freshmen.

But on a better note, the freshmen WR's that Dabo brings in is not what others have either.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Our guards are too

Nov 6, 2019, 4:49 PM

Actually he missed 4 in a row before making one. When he missed all 3 after being fouled on a 3-point shot, that's when I knew the game was over. No excuse for that, even from a true freshman. VT's young players hit what, 10 in a row down the stretch?

This is probably the most ridiculous thread I’ve seen in a while. Today is November 6. While Brad has had ample opportunity to deliver, this is the first game of a new season. He will not be fired during the season. DRad will make a an appropriate decision at the end of the season. In the meantime, enjoy the wins and get a hobby to occupy your brain cells in between. :)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No one in the thread has called for him to be

Nov 6, 2019, 10:28 PM

fired after last night. Many feel he's had beyond long enough to have us further along than we are. The decision will come in March. He has the season to prove the doubters wrong
