Self Employed folks - What CC do you use?

Aug 21, 2021, 4:56 PM

I'm trying to debate which Credit card will be best. I'm a sales rep in Georgia and Tennessee so I travel a decent amount.

I do stay overnight in hotels about 5-7x a month, so I considered getting either a Marriott or Hilton cards to racks up points for hotel rooms.

I've also considered getting a Chase Saphire Preferred or Amex business. With that said, I've never had one of them, and transferred the point for hotel rooms.

I do want to keep it to 1 card for now, and just run all business expenses through it to keep things simple.

Anyone have a favorite card, and share their reason why?

I use a Cabellas card from Capital One. I like getting “stuff” at Cabellas with my points. My family thinks I’m awesome at Christmas also. They don’t know my secret. Lol.

Yep they do. .327 Federal Magnum. Ruger made a lot of pistols for it, as did S&W and Charter.

Amex Platinum. The travel beneifits, lounge acess, and their travel dept are great. Steep annual fee but worth it if you use the perks. We use the “fine hotels” collection at least twice year. Uber credit, airline credit for checked bags, and included gold status of most hotels and rental cars.

As long as you can pay off the balance every month, the Marriott or Hilton rewards cards are worth it. If you’re gonna carry a balance, then no.

I drive a semi now, in fact I’m an owner / operator, but before I did this I spent about ten years traveling around fixing surgical equipment for Stryker. I typically spent around 260 nights per year in Marriotts. But Marriott - Hilton, they’re both about the same. I chose to stick with one because they reward you for your loyalty.

The loyalty tiers you’ll see in Marriott are Silver Elite, Gold Elite and Platinum Elite. When you reach Platinum Elite they give you a new number to call for reservations. Your phone number gets entered in their system and whenever you call, they answer calling you by name.

A co-worker once mentioned to me some black ops loyalty category they wouldn’t acknowledge even existed. He said it was supposed to be the top 5 percent money spenders that got the title of “Platinum Premier “. ……I passed it off. I figured I’d never be close to THAT level.

A few days after we whooped Bama in Tampa I was getting my morning coffee in the lobby of a Marriott that I frequented. One of the women working the desk that morning congratulated me. I replied, “Oh I didn’t have anything to do with it, I don’t think I even have any eligibility left.”

Confused, she said, “What ? I was talking about your new status.” Then she showed it to me in the computer.

A few weeks later a new card comes in the mail (with a new number to call for reservations). Then somebody at that call center in Omaha told me there was a red light on the wall there that went off anytime a Platinum Premier member called. They didn’t want the phone to ring more than once.

No matter how booked a hotel was - it was never too booked that I couldn’t get a reservation. I cancelled resort reservations the day of without penalty. Every time I walked in the lobby, people were trying to b##w me. I loved the fact that I could be in a particular hotel for the first time ever, come back from a bar that evening and hotel staff would greet me by name as soon as I walked through the door.

My wife and my girls booked rooms all the time on points I had. I don’t think we paid for a hotel stay for about 7 years. …..And they were jet-setting just because the hotel accommodations were always free.

My oldest daughter road tripped back to Nashville after she graduated college to go to a concert with one of her friends who was still in school there. I put in something really nice downtown. She called late that afternoon when she checked in, “Dad, we were going to go out afterward but this room is really nice ! We might just get some alcohol and come back here !”

I told her, “Kate, it’s nice for sure. ……But go hit Broadway.”

BTW, you’ll know you spend a lot of nights in a hotel chain when the layouts feel more familiar to you than your actual home. More than once I’ve come back to my room late ( maybe a little lit ) and my card doesn’t work.

…..I swipe it and the light goes red. ……Swipe it again and red. Maybe third time is the charm…..

Swipe and the light goes red. …..hmmmm

Then the door opens and I’m staring at some dude who’s trying to figure out who it is that wants in his room.

“Sorry, I was in 212 last night.”

Okay, this is a pretty cool story.

I don't think I'll ever hit that level, but it may sway me to stick to Mariott and see how far up the ladder I can get.

I am a big fan of Amex.

Aug 21, 2021, 6:57 PM

Either the Amex Platinum or the SkyMiles Reserve.

These will more than pay for the annual fee of ~$500 if you’re spending a lot with the card.

There are a lot of options today.

Aug 21, 2021, 7:08 PM

I would suggest looking into whoever you currently bank with. I have a personal account, savings account, and two business accounts with Suntrust so they gave me a great deal on a credit card.

Because it’s so easy for people to clone or copy cards nowadays I try to limit my debit card use and I use my credit card for everything. I even have my mortgage and all of my bills automatic drafted from my Suntrust credit card.

I get points and other perks. The only exception is I have an Amazon prime card through Chase, which pays 5% back when I use that card on Amazon. I always pay it off within a few days as well.

Go online weekly and pay off the balance. Never carry a balance for more than a few days that’s more than 30% of your credit limit. Otherwise it’s going to put a hit on your credit score. I’m a mortgage broker. I’ve been doing this for over 30 years, before there were credit scores, and nothing crushed your credit like carrying a balance on a credit card. Algorithms are brutal when it comes to high balances on revolving debt, such as credit cards and equity lines.

The basic rule of thumb is to not carry a balance over about 30% if possible and on a weekly or biweekly basis pay it off or down as much as possible.

So check out your bank and if you are already an Amazon prime member look into the Amazon prime card through Chase.

Sounds like most of your travel is over the road. If you fly a lot then I would look at one of the cards for an airline that you use a lot. I have cards for the 2 airlines that I fly the most and they do well all the way around for travel. I used miles to go to Santa Clara, so they might help you get to our next National Championship.
