To chilibean and other Tiger Woods fans......

Jun 17, 2019, 12:33 PM

Let me ask you this. Would you want someone of Tiger Woods's character to be any of the following:

Pastor of your church?
Elementary school teacher in your town?
Your chief of police?
A municipal judge in your town?
A guidance counsellor in your local high school?
Head coach of the Clemson football team?
(I can assure you that if Dabo had done what Tiger has done, he would not be our head coach.)
Would you leave your 18 year old daughter alone with him for an hour?

If the answer to any of the above is NO, then why do you want him to become the all time championship leader in your beloved game of golf. Do you not care about the integrity of the game?

One of your great champions is Jack Nicklaus. He has always conducted himself admirably both on and off the golf course. I don't remember him having character issues. I mean, I have never seen his drunken mug shot on the morning news. Isn't he the kind of man golfers can look up to and admire in all facets of his life? A champion that everyone can be proud of? He has been a great ambassador of the game and a standard bearer for golf for a long time. Why do you want a person with the low moral character of Woods to supplant him as one of the greatest of all time?

I know I am old fashioned and believe a person's character is important in life. I believe that honesty, integrity and morality are still important qualities for people to possess. As I look around at many of our elected officials, sports heroes and celebrities I realize that many no longer care about a person's character. I think this is very sad.

I can see you admiring Woods for his ability to play a skillful game of golf. But for the life of me I cannot understand how you can actually pull for the slime ball to win. Do you really want to be standing beside the 15th green at the Masters next year with your 8 year old child when Tiger cuts loose with one of his patented F-bombs when he misses a 3 foot putt? I didn't think so.

Okay. Flame away. The TD button is open for business.

Neither Jack nor Arnold seem to have any bad behavior that has ever come out or people suing them.
Now they did play in a much less intrusive era but you would think given the scope of their business empires if there were any we would hear. I dont get the fascination with TW except we seemed to be tolerating more and more antics among celbs and sports folks generally.

The media certainly adores him. It could also be that many would like to see an American excel at what has become a very international sport. But your point about character is well taken.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is one problem with today's media centric world

Jun 17, 2019, 2:20 PM [ in reply to Re: To chilibean and other Tiger Woods fans...... ]

EVERY SINGLE transgression is talked about and highlighted ad nauseam.

People haven't changed, we just don't have a record of their wrongdoings, or personal feelings.

Most everyone in their old age seems like good people. But when they were young and wild and free, they were no different.

What is your character? is it beyond reproach? You don't
know if Tiger hasn't asked for forgiveness.

TW may be a redemption story in progress, and that's something some people like to pull for.

A lot of folks pity the broken, but look with disgust at the redeemed because how dare they come out of the muck where I can look disparagingly at their life.

I promise you this. Dabo has dropped quite a few F bombs when something hasn’t gone clemson’s way. It’s just not quiet so you can’t hear him as easy. So is Dabo better because he is in a venue that’s louder those regards?

Shouldn't you be worried about Muschamp failing to call Dabo on Father's Day, since Dabo is HIS DADDY!

I doubt most of the board cares

Jun 17, 2019, 2:00 PM

If no one seems to care about our president cheating on his third wife with a pornstar shortly after the birth of his fifth child and then paying her to keep quiet, I don't see why they would give a hoot about applying those same standards to a golfer. Then again, hypocrisy certainly hasn't stopped them before. Flame away.

Ephesians 4:31-32 – Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Per Bible.

We all fall short of God's standards.

Some fall harder against man's standards.

But we all are bad by nature...sin.

I don't care if Tiger breaks Jack's record or not. I do believe that anyone who tries to change their life for the better, having learned from past transgressions, deserves a chance. God forgives.

There are a lot of wise people on here ..... some wiser than others! I don't disagree with much of what the OP posted, but will say this. The people you see on TV and think you know are not always the people you think they are. Not singling out anyone the OP mentioned, but suffice to say that most professional golfers know how to talk and what to say when they are before a camera. They also know how to keep their lives private and do not allow themselves to get caught doing what Tiger did. Not all do it, but some do, and you don't know which ones they are. Others have also been caught. Others, not so savvy, i.e. John Daly more or less lead their lives in the public domain.

I will repeat something that I said earlier that some took offense to, but Tiger is good for golf. That does not mean, you have to like him, or anything else, but the impact of his presence on the golf course in tournaments is indisputable.

I really hate this poast. Too many sanctimonious reasons to state at the moment.

Just thankful the OP is so much better than all of us commoners.

Woods is usually very polite and professional to the media. I don't get the hate on him from you guys. He had trouble with his wife and he has had a dui. I have plenty of friends that have had problems like this. That doesn't make you a bad person. It doesn't make you a good person to not have had trouble with the law or not have a devorce either. You questioning is idiotic because he is not anything of those things nor does he try to be any of those things. Tiger Woods character is far more than many politicians. Most of his peers enjoy playing with him and admire him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who are we to judge the man? He’s good for the game of golf

Jun 17, 2019, 11:30 PM

And that’s a fact.

He’s not a preacher or any of those other positions you mentioned so your point is moot. He didn’t touch children like so many “men of god”

Hopefully he has turned his life around but really that’s none of my business. I’m not about getting on my high horse and looking down on others to make myself feel better.

I'm not even a golf fan, but I loved watching his Masters win this year. One of the top 3 greatest moments in sports. And the reason it was so exciting was because of just how far he'd fallen both on and off the course. It's easy to sit in your recliner and judge these people, but that's what they are, people. People make mistakes. And in today's world, they're being handed crazy amounts of money at a young age, and every single thing they do or say shows up on a hundred media outlets, most of which have an agenda that drives how they post that stuff. I'll admit that I got charged with a DUI that got reduced 7 years ago. The details around it are controversial, but at the end of the day, I was flirting with the legal limit and decided to drive on a main highway at 2am. It was dumb, and I paid for it for years with high insurance rates, missed job opportunities, and personal embarrassment. At the time, I was barely employed and virtually non-existent to anybody outside my family and small group of friends. I can only imagine how much more trouble I'd be in today if I'd had millions of dollars and constant media attention during my early 20s. Now I'm sure you'd sit up there on your ivory tower and just lump me in with the rest of the "slime balls," but to less judgemental people, I'm just a guy who screwed up once.

Now most of these athletes and celebrities who get in trouble put themselves in those situations and some of them continue to make more bad decisions and never climb out of it. But sometimes, they hit rock bottom, realize they've got nobody to blame but themselves, and claw their way out of it. If you want to get religious there's a plethora of stories in the Bible about people clawing out of personal holes. Paul used to actively persecute Christians before his conversion. Now if Woods just falls right back in the pit again, then this becomes a different conversation. But at the moment, you're looking at the greatest golfer ever competing on the highest level of the sport in his 40s just a couple of years after being practically unable to sit down and getting arrested for a DUI. You see a "slime ball" as the most popular figure in the sport of professional golf where you for some reason expected to see some pillar of humanity beyond reproach. I see a guy who hit one deep into the tall stuff, and managed to nail a recovery shot and somehow land on the green. That's something to be excited for not something to ridicule.

To spotlight his foibles, yet

Jun 18, 2019, 9:41 AM

Ignore the fortitude and commitment to get up off the deck and return to the upper echelon of his profession is, at a minimum, bias and narrow-minded. It's not even a question of like/hate, merely viewing through a lens of fair evaluation, which it seems some are incapable of doing.
