Seeing plenty of post about who we should grab in the portal

Dec 16, 2021, 7:48 AM

I'm assuming we want impact players. So I'll ask what seems to be the pertinent question?

How are we paying them? The quality guys are clearly getting NIL money. Where is our payroll coming from?

In recruiting, Texas and Tennessee are now offering up to a million a year total to be an OL on scholarship. How will we pay our recruits?

We had 3 high quality recruits from IMG who were supposedly pretty tight. All decommitted and wound up at different schools. You think that was all BV leaving?

Yet somehow we convinced to top QB in the nation to attend, and 11 other guys who cumulatively are the fifth rated class talent wise in the country to choose Clemson. Are they on NIL deals? If so, where is it coming from?

Or did they simply choose Clemson for other reasons? What would those reasons be?

New Spring Church of course !!!!

Dec 16, 2021, 7:55 AM

Everybody knows that church has been covertly funneling money to Clemson players and into the Clemson football program for years. Just ask the moral defective brain trust on any uof7c fan site.

And it's legal now!!!

and they're a non-profit :) Dabo got this!

I'm actually a little worried about Cade. He has said NIL is important but also said "it will work itself out" after he plays.

What if he's starting here in 2 years and gets a 4 million offer to go back to Texas? I think things like this are going to hit schools like us hard in the coming years. We dont even have a single NIL program and these schools have 1 for every position so far.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Klubnick were all about the money he would have signed

Dec 16, 2021, 8:23 AM

elsewhere. If he plays like we all hope, money from legit businesses will take care of the $$$$

At least some of our guys are getting NIL money. They are just doing it the way the rule was intended instead of being paid just to be on the roster. That’s is what Cade means when he says it will work itself out after he plays. If he becomes a star the deals will come. Kind of like the NFL. You don’t see very many OLs making commercials. The big name guys get the big advertising spots. He actually seems to understand that you need to earn what you get.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep, as the number 1 QB in the country

Dec 16, 2021, 8:25 AM

he could have named his price. He didn't

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are not worried about Cade, because you are a SCAR fan.

Dec 17, 2021, 5:25 PM [ in reply to Re: Seeing plenty of post about who we should grab in the portal ]

You keep saying you went to Clemson. Prove it, what was your major, where was your dorm?

Re: Seeing plenty of post about who we should grab in the portal

Dec 16, 2021, 8:07 AM

Some think grabbing players out of the portal is like filling a shopping cart at Walmart. Doubt it's that easy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Right now it's money plus opportunity for the high end

Dec 16, 2021, 8:22 AM

guys. Right now, it's not like we're flush with either. There are a few areas of opportunity, but do we just want bodies, or a guy who can really contribute? That guy will cost $$$

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Right now it's money plus opportunity for the high end

Dec 16, 2021, 8:27 AM

Unless we find a guy that has the mindset that CK seems to have - that you need to earn what you get. But I doubt there are a lot of those guys jumping into the portal. And this is probably another reason Dabo isn’t taking a bunch of portal guys. He’s still looking for guys that fit the culture.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apart from CK we signed some pretty darn good recruits

Dec 16, 2021, 8:40 AM

guys who could have possibly gotten NIL money elsewhere. So there are some o0ut there like that. They also should be able to be identified, even though they'll be the minority in all likelihood

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Apart from CK we signed some pretty darn good recruits

Dec 16, 2021, 9:01 AM

Right - I just think we have a better chance of finding those guys coming out of HS as opposed to finding them in the portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, and when we get a portal kid

Dec 16, 2021, 9:06 AM

he'll be that type of kid

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Agree, and when we get a portal kid

Dec 16, 2021, 9:09 AM

That’s what so many on here don’t understand. This is a big part of why we haven’t used the portal yet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we can't pay them, the NIL will "KILL" Clemson Football and

Dec 16, 2021, 8:43 AM

a lot of other programs across the country w/ the exception of a select 10-12 that can and WILL afford it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So why are some expecting us to get these top-flight NIL

Dec 16, 2021, 8:44 AM

guys?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it's a mix........

Dec 16, 2021, 8:55 AM

1. I think some (like myself) are frustrated that Dabo didn't start utilizing the portal sooner seeing that we've averaged 7-8 LEAVING per year the last 4 years to at least assist in backfilling scholarships. Now, Dabo seems to be open to it this year, but it took an "in the red" scholarship player situation for that to happen.............I'm not even talking about "top flight" guys, we're talking numbers now.

2. I do believe we had a "window" where we could attract some "elite" players at their respective positions from the portal before this year when NIL really took hold............now that NIL is in play it's likely a lost cause, but to use a basketball phrase..."you miss 100% of the shots that you don't take"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Before this year they had to sit a year

Dec 16, 2021, 9:00 AM

so you are trying to project needs a year down the road. We went about addressing it through recruiting.

The no sit rule changed things drastically.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's been longer than just this year, but yes the no sit rul

Dec 16, 2021, 9:05 AM

quite frankly sux and has helped in ruining the game............but it's here and Dabo has to adapt and we can't sustain anything by depending on incoming recruiting classes (especially small ones) to effectively backfill 7-8 transfers OUT per year.

Dabo dropped the ball from a roster management standpoint, hopefully he can recover.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: we can't pay them, the NIL will "KILL" Clemson Football and

Dec 16, 2021, 9:04 AM [ in reply to we can't pay them, the NIL will "KILL" Clemson Football and ]

Here's where I see the correction.

1. You find out who loves the game. The guys in it just for the money will not be as committed. Winning will still be done with football players, even if that's with 3* who are 22 year olds competing against 18 year olds.

2. As bretfsu pointed out previously, what happens when a booster decides to spend more money on NIL deals and less on IPTAY, as an example, donations? That will start affecting the bottom-line at the universities, especially if the results aren't there. Now, if the results are there, the bottom-line at the universities will be fine.

3. How many of these guys will truly get life-changing AND not play? If guys aren't playing, will the NFL take them.

It might take a couple years, but I think you will see some of these deals dry up due to lack of performance and legislation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the only way it can be "corrected" is through......

Dec 16, 2021, 9:10 AM

legislation........and that's a reaching prayer.

I think you might see some correction in say some "Dr. Pepper deals".........however it's just like the 80s college football...........the ONLY ROI the boosters saw by paying players w/ money and cars were their play on the field........they don't care about "marketing". Nobody's going to stop an uber rich donor from going to a recruit and say "i'll pay you a million dollars if I can put your picture on a billboard ad for my company."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With things set up state by state right now that's pretty

Dec 16, 2021, 9:18 AM

much impossible. There will have to be some guidelines that apply to everyone. We know that will be fought in the courts. It's a mess

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

agreed, it's a complete mess and you could........

Dec 16, 2021, 9:22 AM

see it from a mile away.

I didn't think we'd see it this soon, but i figured in 2-3 years it would be this way.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A team full of mercenaries is also likely

Dec 16, 2021, 9:10 AM [ in reply to Re: we can't pay them, the NIL will "KILL" Clemson Football and ]

to have far less cohesion. If pro sports has proven anything, money is no guarantee of championships

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Seeing plenty of post about who we should grab in the portal

Dec 16, 2021, 8:51 AM

As for NIL, what's going to hurt is that really great culture fit guy which money isn't the reason he's coming here but his family could use the money.

I'm thinking like dw4. He really wanted to come to Clemson but a sleazy Tenn or Kirby tells him here's a million bucks for your mom.

Unless we have some plan, missing that recruit would hurt... Even though they really wanted to play here, itd be hard to turn down. Tough question that lets hope Dabo, kiffin, CBV, day and others band together. That's just 4 I've read speak out on it. Sure there's a hundred more.

There are way more who cannot afford the big NIL money

Dec 16, 2021, 8:57 AM

than who can. Will they bond together to lead for change? Pretty much have to

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: There are way more who cannot afford the big NIL money

Dec 16, 2021, 9:07 AM

And this is another great thing about JS, BV and TE moving to head coaching jobs. I’m pretty sure they share Dabo’s views on this so this will be coaches from 4 schools voicing the same opinion instead of just coming from Li’l ole Clemson and Dabo’s “Awe Shucks” program being the outlier. Dabo is fighting the good fight in more ways than one.

DW4 could still get that money at Clemson. It just wouldn't be up front. It would be from what NIL is truly supposed to be. Sponsors would have been lining up out the door to get to DW4.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Seeing plenty of post about who we should grab in the portal

Dec 16, 2021, 9:19 AM

That is pretty much what Klubnik said.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it was sleazy before it was legal....just sayin'

Dec 16, 2021, 9:20 AM [ in reply to Re: Seeing plenty of post about who we should grab in the portal ]

it's still so new it certainly "feels sleazy" but is it???

the NCAA, lawyers, politicians all essentially said "you can now pay for players to come to your school"
without ANY parameters or policing.

just like 1000s of people getting a new roof when there are a couple dents in a shingle due to "hail damage"............if the insurance companies says they'll pay for it then have at it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is all going to work itself out in about 3-5 years when

Dec 16, 2021, 9:50 AM

2/3 of college football fans over the age of 50 check completely out on the sport.
