SEC commish says they have to "rethink" their position on

Feb 18, 2022, 5:14 PM

CFP expansion. What does that mean? With less playoff spots for them - sending the horns and OU back to the Big 12? lol.

It was a failure to not expand the CFP to at least 8 teams. Many will say “leave it as is”. I doubt they’ll say it when their team is 5th and out. The pressure is on now for the ACC. A one loss ACC Champ is guaranteed nothing.

I get where you are coming from but regardless of the number there will always be that first out and complaining. The way the playoffs have been recently the semifinals have not been any good.

If you had eight, you wouldn't be complaining about winning

your conference and getting left out. That's a lot different than runners-up getting left out!

Pretty sure Clemson has been to the playoff several times with a loss to an unranked opponent.

I do not believe losing early to a ranked team hurts you that much if you end up winning the conference. Strange how things work out with GA getting pounded by Bama and then plays them again 2 games later. Not sure you will see that very often.

Did uga drop the SEC Championship game to get 2 SEC teams into the CFP?

Exactly, but SEC teams expect a guarantee for there 2 loss teams, and that is exactly why the SEC commish is crying about a 4 team playoff!!!!

Name the 2 loss SEC team to make the playoff.

I don't the the SEC Commish is opposed to expansion. He does oppose any system which limits the number of teams in from one conference. That's the same position you would take as SEC Commissioner.

team playoff, with no limit on number of teams per conference. His dream is for the SEC to have six of the 12 teams in a twelve team playoff!

I hope the other conferences have the balls to stick together, and not allow more than three teams per conference, even in a 12 team playoff!

Sure. And the position of the other conferences should be a 4 team playoff with only conference champions allowed unless an undefeated ND. Would effectively block at least 10 SEC teams from ever having a chance of making the playoff and give other conferences a nice recruiting tool.

The SEC is doing fine under the current system. Expanding helps conferences like the Pac 12, who given the current state of their teams, won't get anyone in without an expansion.

I am sorry- the SEC is always given a boost at the start of the season- over ranked teams.
just my honest opinion. Have do have a team that could not get out of their own way one year- nothing changes and then all of a sudden the following year - they are a top ten team-
It just not happen.
Alabama- they are a good team and have been for many years- but it does not matter if they when it all or go 10-3 the following year - they will start out the season as the number one team- worse case the number two team and within a week will be #1. We have seen it way to much.

What a moronic post trying to make us believe the SEC is only pushing expansion to help other conferences. Was the SEC trying to help the Big 12 by poaching their two biggest named teams?

No one is trying to make you believe anything and the SEC certainly isn't trying to help anyone. Expansion helps the lesser conferences like the Pac 12 and ACC. You should be able to understand why.

Playoff expansion only helps SEC and possibly the Big 10. Everyone else is lucky to have one relevant team. You are kidding yourself to think the SEC wanted to expand to help the Pac 12... LMAO.

Re: SEC commish says they have to "rethink" their position on

I never said the SEC was trying to help another conference. I think expansion helps other conferences. Move to 8 or 12 teams and the PAC 12 has a shot. Maybe another group of 5 has a shot. Maybe a 1 loss ACC runner-up gets in. Keep it as-is (4 teams) and watch the SEC take 50% of the playoff spots.

should have more than 25% of the field. Anyone who really wants what is best for all of college football would agree. Of course Skanky now wants to expand to 12. He figures the SEC would get at least four in every year...maybe five or six some years. The Alliance better stick together, or those conferences will get screwed!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dawg...you are so off base. If there had been a 12 team

Feb 19, 2022, 7:38 AM [ in reply to Re: SEC commish says they have to "rethink" their position on ]

playoff each of the years Clemson has made it, there would've still only been Clemson in it from the ACC, exeept for 2020, if you count ND. But in most of those years, the SEC would have gotten at least three and sometimes 4 or 5 in. So, which conference stands to gain the most from expansion of the playoff? The SEC, of course! You know that...that's why you think playoff expansion is such a great idea!

Not sure what there is to rethink. He wants to run the whole thing. SEC is all about the money imo and it never seems to be enough. Not sure how all this ends up but financially there will not be no more than 10 teams that I feel would legitimately have a chance at winning the whole thing and 5 plus is in the SEC. Maybe more than that when TU and Oklahoma joins.

Big 10 is about to get a billion a year.

Not sure when it was last negotiated. The money portion is fluid in regards to the difference from one year to the next. What may look good one year may look really bad in a year or two.

Re: SEC commish says they have to "rethink" their position on

Feb 18, 2022, 7:51 PM

Here is the problem...what is best for each conference and the group of 5 is not necessarily what is best for "College Football" as a whole!!! And each conference Amd each commissioner has a job to do what is best for their conference. There is no entity or configuration that has a charge to do what is best for college football as a whole!

The SEC wants a system where the "best" teams get in with no auto bids and based on a committee's opinion...makes no difference if it's 4 teams or 6 or 8 etc...they want as many of their teams in as possible because they think they have more of the best teams and they do!!! They should want this!!! It's true!!! The Big 10 could also be persuaded in this also as they are second in line with the most "best" teams!

The ACC, BIg 12, PAC 10 Amd group of 5 want a auto qualifier if there is more than 4 teams or just keep it at 4 because they know they have less of the "best" teams but all can produce a very good team most years that will get in a 4 team playoff over an Sec or Big 10 runner up...they do t mind expansion as long as it has auto qualifiers!!! They should want and fight for this because it's in their best interest!!!

But neither of these is what's best for college football!!! The sec having all the best teams and best players is not what is best in the long term as a whole for college football!!! Like all sports leagues...they strive best as a whole when there is parity!!!

What I personally think should happen is this...for a 4 year run...they should have a 6 team playoff with each power 5 conf champ auto qualify and the highest ranked best group of 5 conference champion auto qualify! Seed them Amd let them play...this will allow some parity with the thought that every conference champ will get in and will include the group of 5 field every year! This will keep college football relevant nationally and keep it from becoming a regional game over time!!! The conference championship games would also become de facto play ins and the first round!!!

After 4 years, decide if you want to move to 8 teams and let the other 2 be committee selected with no more than 2 from any conference...seed and play ... then you can decide the rest after 4 years of this...12/16 teams etc where you can auto qualify division champions from each conference.

Some setup like this would be what is best for college football as a whole imho!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OIBTiger3...that is a great post...you hit the nail on the head!

Feb 19, 2022, 7:48 AM

We know Skanky only cares about what is best for the SEC, but someone better be thinking about what is best for college football nationally! No matter the number of teams in the playoff, the limit from any one conference should be 25% of the field! Thus, only one in a 4 team playoff, 2 in an eight team playoff, 3 in a 12 team playoff.

Without this restriction, football will become more and more, just a regional sport! The "Alliance" better have the balls to stand up to the SEC in any playoff discussions!

6 teams is exactly my thought process. If conf relativity is put over the best teams would be my issue. How close to the top 6 teams world you get? 5 conf champs and one at large for 6 makes the most sense but feel there will be some lopsided contest no doubt.

There are lopsided games most of the time now, in the semis!

Feb 19, 2022, 6:49 PM

That can't be avoided, because there are usually two teams significantly better than everyone else...three at the most!

Re: SEC commish says they have to "rethink" their position on

Feb 19, 2022, 7:49 AM

What is there to rethink? From what I heard on WCCP yesterday the decision not to expand was based on the current television contract. By waiting until 2026, that gives stations like FOX, NBC, CBS, maybe even Amazon the chance to consider whether or not to consider placing a bid against ESPN.
Expansion is coming. It is only a matter of time, but at least this gives the other networks a better chance to secure the bid for their network.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: SEC commish says they have to "rethink" their position on

Feb 19, 2022, 8:00 AM

The rethinking being done right now is by the Power 5 Conferences other than the SEC, trying to avoid being run over roughshod by the Sankey-led SEC/TV Cabal. If they don't pump the brake now, the SEC will own it all soon, which to their credit they seem to be doing. Good luck cause money talks these days and the TV folks have had it all for a long time, until NIL showed up. Now that corporations are involved in buying players and eventually entire conferences, the old boys pumping the brakes right now are the smart ones for the good of the sport IMO.

In a nutshell this is Premier League futbol or soccer. When looking at the table or standings there are not but a handful of teams that could legitimately be competitive. The teams with the most money usually win. No salary cap. Large clubs like Manchester, Liverpool, and Man City should always be around top 4 unless they have tons of injuries because they will most definitely have the better players. Do you realize with the salary cap in place in the NFL how bad you have to be to consistently be a Detroit or NY Jets?

Well, if every season is like last year, there were only 2 teams that deserved a playoff spot and they were both SEC. Cincy did not belong and Michigan lost to Michigan State and also proved they didn't belong.

Other than Alabama, who beat Georgia in the SEC championship game, Clemson played Georgia better than anyone else and you all cried all season and don't disrespect my Horns.

It was good to see Cincinnati get a shot after the way they finished the previous season and played this season. I get putting them in and was more impressed with them than I was at Michigan. Not sure if Michigan had a bad game or what but I was expecting a lot more out of them against GA. GA getting beat in the SEC championship refocused that team.
