SEC bias already starting…

Oct 12, 2022, 6:40 PM

Dennis Dodd on radio telling me that if Tenn wins this weekend we could have 3 SEC teams in CFP.

Dennis Dodd used to write for CBS and Yahoo.

Pretty famous college football writer. Not sure who he is with now. I think it’s that new platform.

Number 1, Bama will win and number 2, he is on drugs.

The bias won't matter in a couple years when we finally have a legit playoff system.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We already do. We don’t need more than 4 teams.

Oct 15, 2022, 8:52 AM

There has yet to be a team ranked 5 or lower that could have won the playoff.

Heck, why not 4? UGA, TN, Bama, Ole Miss are all undefeated. All could finish either 11-1 or 12-1. Why not put all 4 in. Remember, it just means more.

Bret, if that happens I don’t believe the ratings would be very high. I for one would definitely not watch 1 second of it.

Yep, they would be turning off millions of fans across the nation. Two from one conference is the limit.

Does ESPN have the broadcast rights for all of the CFP games?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's probably statistically impossible

Oct 12, 2022, 9:35 PM

....so I wouldn't worry about it.

Just a stupid comment from a so-called "expert".

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think it will happen, but the rankings are subjective...

Oct 13, 2022, 12:49 AM

They're subject to some statistics, but inevitably college football rankings are mostly weighted by human opinions. It's not statistically impossible when you consider that.

Historical perspective

Oct 13, 2022, 5:28 AM

In the history of the CFP how many times has this actually happened? Zero times. As in NEVER. The SEC has had better teams and better conferences than this year too.

On the other hand, I count the # of times hyperventilating fans have predicted in October that "this is the year it's going to happen" Over a Billion times and still counting. The SEC will NEVER get 3 teams in a 4 team CFP, and neither will any other conference. Rest easy.

It has been and will continue to be virtually impossible.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They’ve only gotten 2 twice. People act like that

Oct 14, 2022, 10:37 PM

is a foregone conclusion. Sorry to inform the media but conference championships are still big part of the formula. A 12-1 Bama or UGA will be sitting home if OSU, CU and USC are undefeated.

Re: They’ve only gotten 2 twice. People act like that

Oct 15, 2022, 8:46 AM

Very true. And let’s be honest. Not sure any team walks out of the regular season undefeated.

Our Tigers may have the best chance, but our schedule has been no cake walk. I would argue a 1 loss Clemson should still get in.

Loooooong way to go.

I get what you are saying, but already starting?

SEC bias has been around for at least a decade, probably longer.

My Friend, as we have seen, anything is possible

Oct 13, 2022, 5:52 AM

in college football.

Dodd is just throwing mud on the wall, for he surely knows the CFP would not survive with three teams from one conference in its present format nor in an expanded eight or 12 team format.

A couple of years ago, there were ominous threats dropped by the B1G Commissioner about such a scenario, which might result in a withdrawal by one or more conferences. I think the CFP Committee realizes (at least to a certain extent) how controversial having two teams from one conference is, and should Bama and UGA, for example, reappear this year, the four-team scenario is going to be on life support.

I supported an eight-team plan from the beginning, because I suspected problems like this would emerge. Secondly, I believed (and still do) that the Committee needs to release their polls at the beginning of the season; make strongly worded statements against all other polls, including the patently ridiculous way-too-early ones; and constantly reemphasize the futility of other polls.

The persistent controversy is over the AP and (to some degree) Coaches' Polls, both of which should not exist. Nor should the network polls exist. They exert far too much influence than they should.

Lastly, I've never held any particular bias against any one conference, including the SEC, which is where I believe Clemson should belong. Thus, my views are toward fairness, including perceived fairness, for all our collegiate programs. That fans across the nation have an anti-SEC bias due to perceived favoritism by networks, polls, etc. is critically detrimental...a fact which has to be addressed by the CFP.

Re: My Friend, as we have seen, anything is possible

And to be fair, if Bama and UGA both have 1 loss with other conference champions having 1 loss I really do not have an issue having them in this year based on what I have seen so far this season. That is of course subject to change based on performance the remainder of the year.

ACC, BigXII, and Pac 12 champions will all be at least 12-1

Oct 13, 2022, 8:39 AM

Right now, it appears the ACC, BigXII, and Pac 12 champions will all be at least 12-1 at the end of the season.

That leaves no room in the CFP for a conference runner-up.

Of course, we have not even made it to mid October yet.

Utah is favored to beat USC this Saturday and that could put another early nail in the Pac 12 coffin.

Our Tigers have a long road still ahead. We will be favored in all the games but definitely opportunities for a loss.

It is so hard to run the table these days.

One per conference works for me. If you are not the best team in your conference, you can't be the best team in the country.

The SEC bias never stops anymore. Why do you think there are so many undefeated SEC teams in mid-October? Look at their schedules.
