Hmmm.... I can only imagine that schools like Spartan High, Dorman, Byrnes, (maybe) Broome, Greenville, Summerville, Irmo, etc. will be 5-A programs, but where does that leave programs like Woodruff (with more state championships than any other program in the state, where QB Tony Rice came from and won an NC at Notre Dame), Conway, Orangeburg, Bamberg, etc.? Now, it's been a while since I've lived there (Spartanburg), but I've never known (2) teams to own a state championship in the same division. I mean, when Spartan High, or Byrnes, or Dorman, or Summerville, or whoever won the State Championship, they were THE State Champion in their division. Obviously, I'm missing something, and/or have been for some time, because the here-to-fore (7) championships and (4) divisions just doesn't click. Someone please enlighten me or advise. TIA.

Bamberg??? Bamberg is in the region I played in in highschool and they bounce between 1A and 2A every other year. They have about 500 students in the entire school.

Pretty much

Apr 22, 2015, 10:29 AM

I believe the 5A will be 8 divisions with 5 schools in each division. 80 5A schools.

Will be interested to see how things shake out and how it affects competition quality. I'm a track coach at a school that got down graded to 3AAA and the falloff in competition is significant.

how many high schools are there in SC now?

Apr 22, 2015, 8:32 AM

seems like a few pop up every year that I've never even heard of.

Somebody mentioned one called River Bluff the other day that I have no clue about.

5A schools...

Apr 22, 2015, 12:28 PM

I can't say for sure but in the upstate I'd say, Dorman (where I went), Spartanburg, Byrnes, Gaffney, Boiling Springs, maybe Hillcrest and Mauldin round out a couple lesser teams. The bigger schools, even more than mentioned above, would have to move up in class just to make this work.

So there will be a region 5-AAAAA?

Or is the op referring to the new AAAAA classification?

Saying 5AAAAA is like saying NC2AA...
