Scholarship Kicker

Nov 4, 2016, 9:50 PM

I don't understand why we seem to not actively and continually recruit high level kickers . They are the highest scoring portion on the team. Kickers should have a high priority and can change games dramatically. I'm not sure but I think the last was Alex Spence and Bradley Pinion. Espn ranked kickers #6 Joe Doyle and #7 Andrew Mevis are still uncommitted, one can do all three phases of kicking and the other is top level at punting and KOs. Seem like Clemson caliber guys too.
What do y'all think? Should our recruiting classes or targets include a kicker each year or longer?

No I wasn't a kicker. Yes I think the coaching staff is doing a wonderful job. And yes I am happy with our current kickers.

Too hard to judge place kickers. Alex Spence is prime example. Too mental. Punters are much easier to judge. Same with kick off guys

By your last statements, it sounds like even you think a scholarship on a kicker would be wasted.

We give kids scholarships all the time that will never play (Dabo Specials). Why not try a kicker. If he doesn't work out there is no difference

High school kickers use 2" tees . College kick it off the ground ...
It would be good to recruit a top notch punter .

Quote that gives the best reason IMO

I agree that the Kicker is the most undervalued position on the field. It's just too hard to tell who will be good. From the article linked below:

"There's a hundred guys out there who can hit a 55-yard field goal in practice," Maher said, "but the secret is to be able to transfer that over to a game in a big-time situation. That's why it's so difficult to predict, because you never know how a guy is going to react until he's put in a situation like that."

And if you run your program like Dabo does (the right way), you are making a 4-year commitment to someone who can't switch positions and can't be coached to improve if they don't already have that innate ability. That's a big risk.

Dabo's like Danny.

Soccer team, Bilo parking lot or whatever. Those two can sniff a kicker out from a mile away.

A kicker was on the list of visiting recruits for a game this year, maybe the Louisville game but I have not heard anything about his visit.

#1 kicker on this list is 10 mins from my house. His school is excelerated curriculum, so he has grades. His highlight reel, everything is 5yds PAST the end zone. He's undecided.

Cuts down on injuries when all of the KO's are unreturnable.

YES, we should recruit kickers...everyone can remember

chip shot missed field goals that caused us to lose games. Every GT game in the 90's comes to mind.

This is certainly an area I would prefer to see a Dabo use walk ons that have kicking ability rather than the feel good offers he puts out there each year.

My local high school had a kid last year kicking that was awesome. He kicked every KO through the back of the end zone and actually hit 40 and 50 yarders in games. Clemson offered him a preferred walkon. He really wanted to go to Clemson but couldn't see making his parents pay Tuition when he had several free rides offered from smaller schools. He took one of those offers and is starting as a freshman and killing it. I wouldn't be surprised to see this kid kick in the NFL one day.
