Scholarship Breakdown

Dec 8, 2021, 6:44 AM

Was curious where we stood, and tired of reading about all the coaching rumors, so I looked at Tigernet’s handy scholarship breakdown page to figure out what numbers we need in this next class.

I had a couple notes/assumptions to accompany this. If anyone stays as a super covid senior, they don’t count towards the 85 limit. All of the junior walk-Ons with scholarships should be replaced with a recruit. Justyn Ross, Jake Venables, Tyler Venables, and Andrew Booth Jr are leaving (no evidence Booth leaves other than he’s the highest projected player we have and maybe this accounts for another random transfer if he stays).

That leaves 11 seniors on scholarship, 25 juniors, 24 Sophomores/redshirt freshmen (tigernet’s designations are wrong and I don’t want to go back and sort through them all), and 13 commits (still have Keon Saban listed). 73 scholarships out of 85.
These are just my guesses based on distribution of scholarships within different positions. With 12 scholarships available, I bet they give Hunter Helms and maybe Billy Wiles scholarships (since we have no one else as a backup QB with Taylor moving to WR).

With the other 10, these are my guesses (so uninformed it cannot be considered a true list ??):
- 2 RBs, one a high school commit (hopefully Trevor Etienne, otherwise staff probably just picks up someone not on the radar now) and maybe a grad transfer who just loves Clemson, since we’ll only have 3 on scholarship next year.
- 1 WR (Antonio Williams), I know we would want more but don’t think we need it with Will Taylor sliding back over.
- 1 or 2 OL (maybe a grad transfer in this count) didn’t someone say Tayquon Johnson may move on from football into law enforcement? If so, this should be a 2.
- 1 DT (missed on big names - so far - but only took Payton Page last year so we have to take 1 again)
- 1 DE for numbers
- 1 LB (unless Baylon Spector comes back)
- 1 other grad transfer from somewhere.

Overall, I feel like Dabo will use the portal for a couple players just to eliminate all the questions about whether he uses the portal and to prevent having a massive class of freshmen that skew future recruiting numbers. If we lose Kanak, linebacker numbers would make me a little nervous. Also, I think Baylon Spector could have another year as a super senior and not count against our scholarship limit. Any thoughts on this?

Looking at current number of commits at key positions, you have to think the coaches are still working on some big names (maybe ones committed elsewhere) and waiting on them to make a final decision. Should be exciting.

Go Tigers!

Great breakdown and analysis but end result will be that we will sign 17 - 18 like Dabo said and he will assign the rest to walk-ons as he's been doing. End of story. TU for your research effort.

I have not seen where Tyler Venables is leaving plus the super seniors do count this year as last year was the single exception.

Thanks for that correction. I guess Spector and BT Potter are gone then. Doesn’t change the numbers I assumed. Tyler Venables is just an assumption. Would be surprised if he doesn’t play his last two years with his dad.

There’s also an interesting thing I just saw about scholarship limits pertaining to the transfer and play immediately rule, but I don’t know how this would affect this class.

I haven't heard anything definitive about Potter or Spector, but players still have the option to take the extra year of eligibility.

The change from '21 to '22 does not remove super seniors.

The change from '21 to '22 just makes it where their scholarships count toward the 85 again.

No player used eligibility during the 2020 season and so anybody who chose to come back for the extra season can still do that.

I thought I heard Potter was coming back.

This was just another idea that "sounded good". In the end, there will be deserving kids who won't get a scholarship because a 6th year player is working on his second Master's Degree.

This is just like NIL, politicians ruin everything they put their hands in.
