Saying goodbye to OIB

Ocean Isle is one of the few islands on the coast that run almost perfectly east/west. This is a view of sunrise from the balcony as we were packing to leave yesterday. Till next year.....

Hard to say goodbye. We go to sunset beach every year... Like 30 yrs running. You're right, the sunrises are spectacular as well as the sunsets too. Near or at full moons are mesmerizing as the light dances off the waves. OI has changed over the years, but nothing like myrtle beach.

OIB's been our family vacay spot for >20 years. This year it

was crazier than I have ever seen it. Overrun with people. We were still happy to be back and to enjoy our usual spots, but I do hope the crowds die down a little after everyone gets their post-COVID stir craziness/cabin fever cured.
Our OIB faves:
-the pier for the pier and breakfast -Breakers for ice cream -Sunset Slushes on the beach -Drift!!! -Ella's at Calabash

People have discoverd OIB and Sunset as an adult alternative

to the hectic Grand Strand.
No motorcycles revving motors, no sounds of cars peeling out, no thumping bass outside the windows, no groups of spring breakers thugging it up on the beach.
It is mostly families with kids and older adults in the area. And let's face it, there is a financial component to the area that makes it attractive.
There are no strip clubs or theme parks. The only thing there for entertainment is the beach, some quaint restaurants, a couple ice cream shops, and one "normal" putt-putt course.
I have also visited OIB for years, remembering when there was NOTHING on the island except houses and one mini-market.

My son is there now. It's our favorite place for the beach, but unfortunately haven't been in about four years. Used to play nine in the evening at the OIB golf course. Last time we were there, a couple houses on the eastern end were close to ending up in the surf as it was lapping up under them. Several semi-trailer size sand bags were nearby. Move in day traffic was usually backed up half way to Hwy 17.
