Tried to post this yesterday during the game

but for whatever reason tnet kept telling me to loggin, when I was already logged in and wouldn't let me post. Yes, I know it is not football, but it will not post under softball.

Foul ball bounces back into play for a base hit. What a crummy softball rule, which lead to Duke's 1 "manufacturered" run.

Same rule in baseball . . .

crummy ‘cause it beat us . . . You want it to be called a foul ball? . . . Then you gotta touch it while it’s foul and before it comes back and touches the foul line.

I always taught my players to slap the ball away when it was foul. I learned that at an early age when I attended a Red Sox instructional camp. Fundamentals should be a big part of any player who expects to play the game for keeps!

I have not watched much softball but in baseball I have never seen a ball hit in foul territory and not be called foul.

I would not respect it if it had been us who got such at hit. Crummy!

Then you don't watch much baseball.

That's the rule.

You've never seen a bunt down the line and the catcher waiting for it to roll foul and then picking it up?

It's where the ball ends up if it's in the infield.

Edited to add:

Happens all the time in youth sports.

Not so much in the pros.

Yes, I have seen that and once it rolls foul I have never seen a ball roll back fair and be called fair. And I have watched plenty of Atlanta Braves and Clemson baseball, since the 80's, just never seen the foul go fair. Maybe because in all the games I've ever seen the players made an attempt to keep it foul and I had never seen what happens when they don't. Always thought the quick scoop once it rolled foul was due to the play being over and no need to waist time. Only thing close to that is the strikeout drop and the batter taking off to reach first. Again, I did not play baseball and in all my years never seen it go down.

It's all about 1st and 3rd base, if it comes back into "fair territory" before it gets to the bases it's fair, not if it's past the bases. If a bust rolls foul you have to touch it so that it doesn't come back fair, or it is fair... obviously you are a novice Baseball fan, and please don't take that as a criticism, it's a particular rule....

It happens. Like forester posted... if it rolls foul you keep it

Foul.. especially if you have to charge the ball.

U don't want a crazy short rolling foul ball turning into a well executed bunt. Which is what happened.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

I hear what you're saying, but it still don't sound right bc out is out once it touches the ground out of bounds. I do know that if a ball rolls out after it passes 1st base, it is a fair ball, but if goes out before it goes past 1st base, it's a foul ball, and I don't understand how it can be a foul, and fair ball in consecutive actions. That rule just don't make any logical sense at all!!!!

I couldn't believe that actually happen bc, I have always thought that if it hits out of bounds, it is a dead ball. If what you say is the rule, then that would mean if a home run ball bounced back off something back into the park, it isn't a home run bc a bounced ball is still a live ball, right???

Not sure if it just pertains to an infield hit or not. Is a first for me, too. I had a compound fracture that limits my turning my wrist over all the way, so I never played baseball, but have watched a ton of games.

The ruling is that a ball that hits foul and rolls back into fair grounds BEFORE it gets by first or third base is a fair ball. Balls hit up either third or first base line and hits foul is always a foul ball. It cannot roll back into left or right field and be fair. A ball that hits anything while out of bounds is a foul ball. A ball that hits a screen or pole or dugout etc is always foul

Just unlucky. It’s a screaming contradiction to insist that series matter all season, then series are abandoned in the playoffs. A one off playoff will by design allow luck to become a larger factor.
